Ohio State's Jim Foster Fired

This is a surprise. I thought he did pretty well, and I didn't know they wanted more in Ohio.

I look for other ADs to use this firing to take a closer look at their own women's basketball coaches to re-examine their expectations for the program, if improvement is being made, and make a determination as to whether they might do better as well if they replaced their coach. Expect other heads to roll.

The Ohio St. fans seem to be pleased with the firing. Here are some names their fans are throwing around but take that for what it's worth.

1.) Jeff Walz- Louisville he is my favorite candidate

2.) Matthew Mitchell- Kentucky would be a hard pull from UK as he is making over 1 million per.

3.) Lindsay Gottlieb- Cal young bright hard work recruiter. Only downside no real ties to Ohio

If I were the AD, I would at least look at Linda Lappe. I've been impressed with what she's accomplished in a pretty short period of time at CU.

Ohio State message boards don't seem to have much of an idea what happened either. Some liked it. No recruits for next year seemed to weigh heavily as did the idea that he hated recruiting.

I don't think head coaches leave Louisville, Cal, Kentucky, or Colorado for Ohio State. Maybe someone from a mid-major. They like a couple of former OSU players on Tara's staff.

I would agree normally but OSU will be throwing texas sized money at a new coach.

Sorry, Norm, but I don't believe Mulkey ever leaves Baylor unless the program completely crashes after Griner and Simms are gone and I don't see that happening.

I think they might get a bite from the Louisville coach. Same proximity. He's put together some good talent. Money and prospect of better recruiting possibilities could intrigue him.

The entire recruiting angle possibility to this certainly could be a harbinger of things to come in the women's game. I think it's finally maybe turning REALLY serious.

I think what he's saying is, if Kim can do it at Baylor, if Summit, Geno, Vandaveer, etc have excelled for years, and if OSU can fire a Jim Foster, then ADs will not likely be as tolerant of mediocre win seasons as they have in the past, particularly with bigtime athletic programs and it starts with recruiting. When you have coaches making $500,000 plus, you should expect results. Apparently Foster was a little too complacent and not producing the way his AD expected given his salary, facilities, budget, etc at OSU.

Yes, but that's pure speculation. We really don't know what other factors may have gone into the Foster decision. And it seems to me that if AD's were suddenly to fire everyone but the top 4 coaches for not being in the top 4, the carousel will have to be of gigantic size.

Obviously that's not going to happen for a variety of good reasons. But, coaches at bigtime athletic programs should be concerned if their programs are not improving and building toward a final four. I think we will see a "what have you done for me lately" attitude with some of the ADs.
