Ohio State's Jim Foster Fired

This is from one of the articles linked above:
The move was also unsurprising because in recent years the Buckeyes have clearly been a troubled bunch. The 2010-11 Buckeye team, anchored by four-time Big-Ten Player of the Year Jantel Lavender (the only male or female basketball player to accompilsh that feat in conference history) and fiery point guard Samantha Prahalis, both of whom have since gone on to career in the WNBA, underwent well-publicized stint of internal conflicts, accompanied by a midseason losing stretch that lasted long enough to put an end to OSU's six-year grip on the Big Ten regular-season championship. The team did regroup in time to capture the conference tournament title, however, but fell to Tennessee in the Sweet 16.

Last year, the Buckeyes showed more cohesion but failed to nail either the regular-season or the conference tournament titles, and their postseason ended with an early exit in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

For much of the season, this year's edition of the Buckeyes seemed to be going through the motions, leading arch-rival Michigan State coach Suzy Merchant to note that “they don’t always play hard.”

Putting together a team that has good chemistry can be a crapshoot, but it sounds like lack of effort has been a problem in recent years. Maybe Foster was kind of burned out.

Source say that DaShawn Harden was disappointed because they where recruting her... I am sorry to hear about this fine coach being let go.

Yes, Norm. You said what I meant more concisely and clearly than I did.

If WBB basketball coaches start getting fired like football coaches, the recruiting wars will definitely escalate to new highs as the pressure to win and land top-ranked recruits increases, and the likelihood of cheating will increase just as dramatically.

Pressure, pressure, presure.

Next few years on the recruiting trail are going to be very interesting. Lot of coaches are going to have to step up.

Wrong. CU is Linda's dream job, and not that far into the future she will be a legend.

You may quote me on that.

It's not really important, but I have a couple of quibbles here. The first is you are taking one incident, supposing you know the total reason for it (which none of us including me know), and projecting your reasoning on the whole of women's basketball. Not very sound logic, but then that's what we do on message boards.

Second, you act like WBB coaches getting fired (or resigning under pressure) for not producing results is something new. It hardly is. You don't have to look any further than our own Big 8/Big 12 to see examples: Dick Halderman, Marion Washington, Marsha Sharp, Jody Conradt, and Cindy Stein come immediately to my mind.

I would be very surprised if Lappe is making more than $500,000 per year. OSU could double that in a heartbeat. I bet her dreams could change pretty quick if you doubled her salary.

Lots of schools have offered Mark Few lots of money.

Lappe's base salary increased to $165,830 to reflect the 3 percent merit pool. Her compensation package is the same as last year and amounts to $124,980 a year and includes, for example, $35,000 for running summer basketball camps. Beginning in 2013, Lappe can earn up to $48,000 a year for incentive compensation — which is double the amount of the previous cap.

Similar to Boyle's contract, Lappe's new contract agreement also increases performance incentives: She can earn $18,000 if her team wins 21 regular season games, up from $6,000 in her former contract. If she's coach of the year in the Pac-12 conference, she could earn $15,000, up from $5,000. A NCAA championship win, for example, could earn her $150,000, up from her previous incentive of $50,000.

If fired, Lappe could claim up to $245,830 a year from the date of termination through April, 30, 2016.

As I said, if I were the AD for OSU, I would at least give her a look along with other candiates. That doesn't mean I would offer her and it doesn't mean she would take the job...it just means I would consider her.

Jeri Porter, head women's basketball coach at George Mason University, has been fired after 5 seasons.

CU as in Colorado?

Rumor has it that their state has setup their athletics to fail by virtue of legislation that bars a lot of multi-year contracts. Institutions like Colorado can only offer 6 (in the ENTIRE university) to non-tenured positions that don't teach 50 percent of the time.

So, you'd likely have the athletic director, the football coach, the basketball coach, and 3 others... and that's likely not going to be in women's sports!

Even if Linda gets one of the coveted multi-year deals, she can't offer them to assistants or other staff. How can you build a program like that?

If she isn't one of the coveted multi-year holders, she's an at-will employed head coach that can be fired at any time without any job security.

I lived in Denver area for 11 years and believe that is correct. Their athletic dept is financially strapped, or it was before they jumped to PAC12.

Both Colo and the Big 12 are better off without them. The Pac 12 is probably having a bit of buyer's remorse though. About all they did with Colo was expand their geographic footprint. If they wanted to do that they might as well have just gone full-on Boise State.

Of course... you should NEVER go full-on Boise State...
