OU assistant recruiting at Salt Lake CC

SLCC is a juco powerhouse. They won the juco national title in 2016. I think you're right that it's Kur Kuath. He already has offers from BYU, Utah, and Utah State. The Sooners need a big man and he is 6'9" and the attached video (above) is impressive. He's awfully thin but the guy is a shot blocker. He's from Sudan so I'm not sure how much basketball he played before juco ball.

The other guy they could be watching is Christian Gray. He's a 6'6" forward who was 1st team all conference as a freshman. His coach said he could lead them in scoring and is a candidate for conference player of the year. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l-8owEDVKT4

I just don't think OU needs a 6'6" PF, and Kuath is a shot blocker deluxe. Gray is averaging 14.9 points and 8.9 rebounds thru 7 games, whereas Kuath is averaging 12.3 points and 6.7 rebounds but also has 27 blocked shots in that span. SLCC is blowing people out over their 7 games so I'm not sure about how good the teams are that they're playing.

Here's an article on the SLCC team before the season. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=l-8owEDVKT4

Kuath looks like we'd be getting two more years of Lattin...and he may have a better jump shot.

I think that would be a solid addition to the 2018-2019 roster.

I watched the video expecting to see another project who could block shots with his unique length and wing span. That’s all I saw in the first half of Kauth’s highlights.

But, he’s a lot more than another big who can defend the paint. He has some legit offensive skills. Reminds me a little of Longer Longer. Runs the floor well. He has a decent repertoire of moves and shots from fifteen and in that includes an ability to put the ball on the floor without tripping over his feet.

Back to his specialty, blocking shots. I liked how he blocks them with either hand. He makes it look easy by going straight up without getting his body too close to the offensive player. My guess is his slight build at 6’ 9” makes the offensive player believe he can shoot over Kauth. They forget about his unique length and wing span that gives him a 9’ 2” reach, a mere 10 inches below the rim standing flat footed.

If our assistants are there to scout Kauth, I’m all for reeling him in if they can.

Does this mean OU is out for a bunch of other guys? Seems like a stretch with limited scholarships available for next year.

You don't want to waste Trae's potential second year with a frosh big man project. A big man 3 some of this guys McNeace and Polla might make more sense. You can sign a frosh big man "project" in 2019.
Course a graduate transfer big man, would make a lot of sense.

or and this is totally just my idea. Bolden at Duke wakes up and realizes he's stuck on the bench again, and transfers to OU at January semester. So he's ready to help 2nd semester 2018-19 for Trae's 2nd year.

No idea. I’m betting Kauth is part of a back up plan.

One thing I like about Lon Kruger is that he’s not shy about moving on to Plan B, if our primary target wants to wait until the midnight hour to make a decision. My observations about Kauth should not be confused with how I hope things will turn out when the signing period rolls around. I trust Lon and his assistants to sign the best player available who wants to be a Sooner.

I think Khavon Moore is the primary target out of Georgia. He's a 6'8" or 6'9" PF that the Sooners are pursuing with Florida being the main contender. Crystal Ball has him 57% to OU but he isn't signing until the late period.

Kauth is likely a backup plan. Kruger doesn't put all his eggs in one basket when it comes to recruiting. I'm sure there are other players they are recruiting for the last 2018 scholarship, too.

Maybe I'm thinking that some of the 2019 guys are in 2018.

We only have 1 scholarship left for 2018 after signing Jamal Bienemy. We have 4 in 2019 plus Trae may declare for the NBA giving us 5.

De'Vion Harmon is the only commit for 2019 so far, but I bet we eventually get his teammate Jalen Wilson, too.

I hope this is all about doing the work and being prepared at decision time in the spring. We certainly know how Capel approached things. Lon is very not Capel. :woot.

So, what bigs do we have a real shot at in 2019? Any bigs in Oklahoma for 2019 to watch? Just wondering. We lost Lattin this year, and McNease next year. Hopefully Polla stays and is ready by 2020, if not we don't have any bigs.

Appreciate the heads up. Thanks.
