I'll look at the performances of Maddie and Peyton a little differently with the advantages of statistics.
I preferred the game against South Dakota State that Maddie had. She only scored 15, as opposed to 16 against Colorado State. But, she was 6-12 from the field and 3-5 from three against SDS, and only 5-12 and 0-5 against CSU. So, she was more effective in scoring against SDS. She had nine boards against CSU and only three against SDS. But, she had 4 assists and 4 steals against SDS with zero turnovers, whereas she had only one assist and three turnovers vs CSU. So, she was a bit more efficient against SDS. I also thought she was more effective at keeping the offense going against SDS. She had some beautiful passes that set up EJ, Vivi, and Peyton. Of course, she didn't have anything as visible as 12 points in a quarter, especially at a time when it seemed that nobody could hit a shot.
What the two games did show was the versatility to score when necessary and to distribute when necessary.
I regarded the games of Peyton as being just the reverse. Peyton scored more against SDS (17 vs 9). But, against SDS, Peyton was only 5 of 15 from the field (albeit 4 of 9 from three). Against CSU, she had only 9, but was 3 of 6 from the field. Neither Peyton nor Maddie hit a three against CSU.
I would say that the most pleasant surprises have been the development of EJ and the immediate impact of Chelsea and Nancy, both of whom have demonstrated that they will be effective at OU.
