OU-UT game thread

We were watching a different game if you thought when Williams came it we played worse. She seemed to me to be very effective against their D. Nothing against Ana, maybe she should have had them both in at once.
Simpson I believe has a very low ceiling, I hope I am wrong. She has to get better from the FT line if she's going to play much. Her form is really bad.
And unfortunately what you see is what you get most of the time. The number of players who are significantly better as seniors than they were as freshman is outnumbered by those who are what they are, for better or worse, as freshmen.

The various people who were revealing where prospects were headed seemed to be totally confused by Soares. I think her father was on a religious mission (for whom?) in Brazil. I think she was or is home-schooled. Although she is said to be an elite prospect with an unlimited upside, I haven't been able to find out where she has played, with the exception of Baker. There were a couple of places she was thought to be considering. I think one was Colorado. I had no idea that she was in a JC.

Okay, Stephanie Soares is the younger sister and played last year, junior year, and this year, senior year at Mt. Baker. Believe this is the only "organized ball" she has played. Her sister played last year as a senior at Mt. Baker, so one year of "organized ball". She is at The Masters University this year as a freshman and is playing basketball. (not a juco) Their brother Timothy played at Mt. Baker (do not know how long) and in 2016 he went to The Masters University. Evidently, their mother, father, and grandfather played basketball but I do not know if they played at the collegiate level.

I believe Stephanie Soares is who OU is following on Twitter and she is a high school senior. http://www.espn.com/high-school/girls-basketball/recruiting/play Someone asked of the person who originally posted about her if she was a JUCO, because he had heard something about a JUCO from Brazil, I believe. Neither young women are Juco's. I have no idea if the older sister is looking at transferring or if she would be someone that OU would be interested in. I think it is Stephanie, the younger sister from Baker, that OU is following on Twitter.

Do not know if this helps or not, but hopefully.

I don't think the Soares ou follows on twitter is the same one that plays basketball...

Okay. I was just following what was said and googling and from what I had, we weren't following a JUCO named Stephanie Soares from Brazil.

I was just on twitter looking for a Stephanie Soares at people the women follow. Found none.

Thanks.

Actually I should have commented on how well Williams did play. Not questioning why she was in the game, more why hasn't she been in the recent games. I still would have not taken Ana out. More likely Ortiz who couldn't get a shot off in a game we needed to score.

I agree, our players have not improved in recent years. This is different from what we saw several years ago when players like Nye Stevenson developed from a raw athletic reserve to a game changer. Amanda Thompson improved, Ashley Paris improved. Joanna McFarland improved. Abi Olajuwan improved. Also DRob, Lauren Andrews and Caton Hill.

I still wonder how hard the players work to improve themselves. Just like I commented on Ortiz. Why has she not developed a pull up jumper since it is so hard for her to get all the way to the hoop. You never hear about any of them doing extra work to improve. Ortiz was good enough to start at point guard on a national team but hasn't shown that ability at OU.

I think some are questioning the commitment of the players and the staff. Some of our players are not conditioned well enough to play competitive D1 basketball. Who to blame???

We had some bad calls go against our team last night....the third foul on Vivi (when she was called for a moving screen) was very questionable in my mind.... Followed by a charge on Ana near the baseline that was iffy. Neither of which cost us the game, but left me shaking my head.

Did anyone else notice the coach and vivi barking at each other as vivi came off the floor after her fifth foul??? I wondered at the time how vivi could be so careless to get her fifth on such an obvious foul....I guess SC was voicing the same concern. Still wondering about the mood of the team?

We have two teams.....a half court offense team..... and a full court, run and gun team. Unfortunately, we only have five players who can run both offenses. Our lack of depth is going to kill us in conference.

Twelve games into the season, and I see the points that are raised. I'm not sure that I have seen sufficient consistency to make firm statements.

Shaina: it does seem that she is much better in an open court game than with a patterned offense. She makes too many mistakes to profit from a pattern right now. She misses free throws, throws away passes, and often shoots ill-advised shots. She'd go for a layup if she had to get past a moat. The upside is that she can almost get away with it any time that she wants. Now, if she can just learn to make free throws and dish off. During the past four games, she is at her best when we aren't as a team.

Penzo: tried to do too much, threw it away early. I think they led 10-2 after about five turnover when we had only taken maybe one shot in six trips down the court. Penzo was trying to make the offense move on her own. No. She isn't quick enough to guardd McCarty. But, McCarty didn't exactly kill us last night. We got hit with a Higgs that had nothing to do with a Super-Collider. She was a one-player wrecking crew last night.

Ana: can play any style. Makes defensive mistakes. But, has the best all-around game of the freshmen. She can do things the others can't, good spin moves. She just didn't get involved after a weak start. Sherri indicated that some early moving screen calls got us out of our use of them. Seemed to question them.

I did notice that the announcers were wondering if anyone would ever get called for fouling Maddie.

We really got off to a very poor start because Vivi wanted to go through people and made mistakes, Gabbi wasn't moving well, and Penzo wanted to do too much.

But, to get within ten by playing street ball. Our athleticism isn''t that bad. When we went with it, we caught up. We didn't get beat by athleticism. Texas has good athletes. But, last night, they thought smarter than we did. Smartest game I ever saw Texas play..

I am also disappointed in the results this year. I'm going to go back and watch the game again, and may have more to add then.

However, let me start with one small ray of hope I have [Not for an entry to the field of 64 - I am very doubtful of that with the non-conference record], but for some improvement:

1. Ana will start hitting the 3 pointers soon. They are so so close, and she is due for some games with lots going in. And when they start to fall, opponents will have to cover both her and Gabbi. That will leave all kinds of exposure for others.

2. I don't think conditioning is the issue. Vivi has clearly gotten in a bit better shape. However, SC MUST stop asking her to do things she cannot do against tall opposing players. It is not fair to her - and has to frustrate her. If SC wanted a more athletic, taller center, she should have recruited one. Otherwise you must design a style that supports the ability of the players you have. But against many teams we have ahead, Vivi will be OK.

One major problem I see is that our coaches do not seem to be able to prepare our players to play particular opponents. The players have to figure it out for themselves as the game progresses. As we play opponents a second time, the players will be better able to prepare themselves.

Year after year, we start the year with lousy free throw shooting. Anyone can get to where they consistently make 65% to 70% of them with enough work. Shaina could double her skill at that by simply shooting with a higher arc. She shoots them too low. It is 100% the coach's fault that it has not improved. Then she needs to spend 30 minutes EVERY day practicing them. That is on her - and the others who shoot FTs poorly.

Question ? Has anyone seen a postgame presser? I know Coale always goes over right after game but what about a press co Terence? Does she decide when they get done? Just curious

Our free shooting will depend on who is getting fouled. Against Texas it was Pellington and Simpson.

If Gabbi, Ana, ViVi and Maddie are getting fouled we will have a good free shooting game.
