OU vs N. Texas

Lets look at it this way.. Maybe this will be our version of the Texas game.

We were led to believe the team started the early practices working on defense. Really??? Our defense and rebounding is bad. Sherri needs to get serious about those aspects of the game quickly.

I agree we stink at man defense, i watched their players blow by us like we were cemented to the floor. Coach has to break her stubbornness to make changes. Vivi was killing them in the post and you take her out and let KayKay finish the game. If you're willing to bench Gabbi, why not KayKay?

Some of you folks are getting pretty close to the line. Be careful. You will get a scolding from Syb.

Thank you!! I was questioning why she took Vivi out. Vivi looked more comfortable out there she was not afraid to go to the hoop. You could see KayKay hesitate and question weather she could go to the hoop or not.

When Brian Brinkley was interviewing her after the game and pointed out some obvious things that the team didn't do, she looked like she wasn't happy with his statements and she also said, "We need more people here", which sort of sounded like an excuse and then rephrased it quickly, saying the lack of energy was on them, but they need more people showing up. The crowd tried, but we feed off the team and vice versa.

Unfortunate. Have not watched the game yet...DVR archive. There was a day that it was pretty much a given win in this type of match up, especially this early in the season. It is what it is. The coaching staff is basically the same and clearly the same coaching style and technique. They get who they get and play who they play. They'll more than likely make it to the tournament first round...well, maybe...if last night was a fluke. So hey, be happy, cheer! OU fans should be so grateful. We have a wonderful history and memories of what could have been...ever so close! Hip hip hooray!
PS...maybe the wizard will visit soon and bring some winning hearts that BELIEVE they can win and then act on their belief. Starting with the coaching staff.

North Texas didn't have many fans there but that didn't keep them from playing well. Sherri needs to stop worrying about the crowd and worry about coaching this team.

There was a time nearly every seat was full this early in the season. Fans want to see winning and exciting play. And winners win with no one watching and cheering.

One of the few times that I think Sherri Coale was outcoached was last night. We didn't come in prepared to play, and then didn't adjust. Vivi should have played more, EJ should have played, and Kaykay should have played less.
Teams CAN come out flat and then gain aggressiveness and energy, but it needs someone to help get them started. I thought during the game that coach Coale was waiting to see if any player would provide that leadership, and when they did not, it was too late for coaches to get them going.
Pulling our center and putting Shaya in late in the game with score tied, to play defense was a defensive mistake. They had been running the pick and roll at the free throw line and killing us with it, and putting Kellog in at center put her in a role she was not familiar with. When we failed to communicate on pick and roll, we got no help from center- wide open lay up, North Texas lead, game over. I yelled that at the time. Just thought it was a poor showing all around.
And I had and still have high hopes for this team, but 2 years ago we had talent and couldn't get it together. I do not want a repeat of that.

I didn't see the game. I read the stats and this board and listened to Sherri, Peyton, and KayKay's post-game comments. It really seems like it was a horrendous effort with zero team focus. Sherri said that, after we opened the game with 4 straight turnovers, they needed someone to take control of the game and "make a play" to calm us down. She said that last year, that person was Gioya and we don't have her right now. Gioya is, obviously, EXTREMELY valuable. However, this team absolutely has enough talent, shooters, size, depth, and experience to beat North Texas at home without her.

Peyton has swagger. She has confidence. She has talent. AND I've heard Coach Coale reference MANY times how "opportunistic" she is. Last year, time and time again, she made baskets when we needed them. What was keeping her from fulfilling the role of being our "go-to guy" last night?

Having said that, this season will get better. Sherri always finds a way to get teams to come together as the season goes on. Remember non-conference season last year?! We lost a LOT of games to teams who should not have beat us. Didn't we lost 6 or 7 straight games? But we came together around January. Girls understood their role. They understood what skills they could bring to the team. This team is, for the most part, the same group. We WILL get better. This will not feel like a "LONG LONG LONG" season. (Well, it might for a little bit). We will make the tournament. We will make some noise in the big 12.

We're struggling with what we should do with the "4" position. Ever since Amanda left basically, we've been running some variation of "4 out-1 in," and I haven't always been sure why we've done that. Sharane made it work last year purely with heart and toughness. She fought for rebounds. She out-worked her taller opponents for position. Norm and others mentioned that Maddie spent too much time hanging out around the 3 point line while playing the 4 position. She is far too valuable for that. Why don't we play ViVi and Kay Kay down low together, with Maddie, Peyton, and Gabbi outside? Have we tried that at all these first 2 games? It seems like we are trying to play entirely too fast. I would love to see us try slowing it down and adding more size. Our guards are quick enough and good at getting steals. We'll still find a way to get a lot of fast break points and occasionally push the tempo with 2 bigs in the lineup.

It was an enormously frustrating game. However, the problems went way beyond the inside game.

1. We were atrocious at shooting the 3. Stop it when you can't hit them!!

2. We don't have a floor leader. It must not have been clear to those watching on TV, but at the game it was clear that KK was having to actually direct the others on where to move, where to pass the ball, etc. She was actually having to point to spots on the floor to show some of the others where to move. That is why Sherri left her in there so much - even though her shots were missing so badly. I am with all of you on the frustration over that part.

3. We are in the worst shape and conditioning I have ever seen at this point in the season.

As is stated above pulling KK in the last defensive moment was a bad move. Very bad - and may have ultimately cost us the game.

I'll have more to say later - but life interrupts right now.

Something is wrong. Ortiz not at point. Did we really start the best 5?

Team chemistry didn't look good.

Outside of Peyton, no one can shoot well.

Defense? Free throws?

One thing we did well was draw the charge.

In the end, 3 NT starters foul out and we can't finish.

Sometimes you have to lose to get better. We are worse than poor, we are bad. Maybe Kornet left (at UCLA) for a reason not explained.

OK. I leave you guys alone to support the team when I host a visitor, and this is what happens? You let North Texas win?

Anyone remember what was unique about the Arkansas game last year?

I don't have much to say. It is interesting that people who never support this team show up after a loss, and, once again, some jump on the opportunity to show that they know more than Sherri.

I think I might be a little hesitant after twenty years of decent success to write Sherri off. I doubt this team plays this poorly, or anything like it again.

If you don't remember what was unique about the Arkansas game, look it up.

Quite amazing! :ez-roll:

Obviously a very disappointing loss. Some knee jerk reactions.

1. Can we please slow down the Maddie Manning lovefest? She's not done anything to justify the hype that she gets on this board. I hope she does but let's back off a bit.
2. Derica doesn't bring much to the table if her shot isn't falling. She's like Peyton Light. Or
last night Peyton Zero. Gioya is a much better compliment to Peyton. I'd start Lanesia if
Gioya is out this year.
3. Sherri's got to start using more of her post players together. 2 posts at a time.
4. Terrible game from Gabbi. She's off to a cold start. Maybe Ton'a needs to start instead.
