OU vs. New Mexico

80-84

Didn't play well. Yet, we came close to a good team on their court.

20 plus turnovers a game and 50 percent free throw shooting, makes for a very long season for this team.

A good team? Give me a break. When will you actually be honest about SC, her coaching staff and the quality of her teams?

If i were syb I suppose right now I would be thankful that we've at least won 2 games this year, and look forward to maybe three years down the road

I think SC needs a season like this, in which she most definitely will not make the NCAA tournament, as a wake-up call. Don't rest on your previous laurels, because the past is the past and the present is now and you've been left behind.

I'm sure SC will get the girls back to Norman and really coach them up for the next game.

We had two sophs and a bunch of freshmen. Didn't we know this would be a difficult season?

As disjointed as this team is, it is a wonder that we aren't being blown out by thirty every game. But, we aren't. Doesn't that reveal something? A team that has no senior leadership, no steadying hand, is playing these games on the road within a few points.

We lost by 17 at South Florida, mostly on the last two or three minutes after having been close. We lost by 5 and 12 in Bimini, closing to within a couple late in the game before having the last few moments go against us. We got to within one tonight after trailing by 16. The last couple of minutes decided it.

Did you notice that it was mostly juniors and seniors who were leading the four teams that beat us? We were putting a couple of sophs out there with four freshmen. One of our "steadying" hands is out with an injury.

You expected a 4-2 start with this?

I've watched the criticism of this team now for a week. Before talking, take a look at the statistics.

Tonight, this ragtag group of untrained freshmen and sophs:

--out rebounded New Mexico
--had a higher shooting percentage than New Mexico
--had a much higher three point percentage than New Mexico
--was pretty much even in free throw percentage.

Negatives:

--turnovers
--New Mexico blocked a lot of shots

Some of that was nonsense. They just weren't calling New Mexico for mugging OU in the interior. But, they were credited with about fifteen blocks. These were the two issues of this game.

On their court. We held their stars in check. The player who went off on us for 39 had never hit for more than eleven. She had it going, for the first time. Even with her threes, we were better shooters by about 10% from three.

We just had freshmen playing like freshmen, and our sophomore star has had three bad games in a row.

Yes, let’s blame the refs. They are why we always lose.

Unfortunately, it looks like this is going to be a very long season. OU's RPI is #225 before this game. Sherri and Colton should be looking forward to the UConn game.

I know that scheduling tough non-conference schedules has benefited SC teams in the past, but it almost cost us last year, and it way, way too hard for this wildly inexperienced team.

I don't agree that we are bad bc our players are young. There are plenty other programs that have had youth and still didn't turn the ball over this much and could at least hit free throws. Even our experienced players always turned it over and were at most unpredictable.
I blame that on our lazy coaching staff. I certainly didn't expect us to be horrible this year, with the 'talent' we had coming in. I expected a few bad games but not four, possibly more than that, losses in a row. I agree, this team will be hard pressed to win 10, let alone 15 games this year.
I think if not SC leaving, at least her coaching staff needs to be escorted out. Believe you me, we keep this level of play up, and don't start winning, we will lose some good players due to transfer and possibly some prospects. Since it seems the coaches can do no wrong.

Other teams incorporate youth into a more experienced lineup. It is nice if Whitney Hand can merge with a Paris. Seven Whitney Hands would have been a losing team.

So let's just be content with 20+ turnover games (5 in a row last night)? At some point we have to hold coach accountable. Simple things like ft shooting though at only 50% as a team....

We won the stat sheet, for all practical purpose. We hit an acceptable level of free throws and don't throw the ball away nearly 30 times and we win this game going away.

We are far enough into the season that hitting free throws should be dramatically improving. We are almost to the point where the ladies have played enough together that there shouldn't be 20-30 turnovers a game.

Players are at fault here, but so is the coaching staff. If they are practicing free throws every day, then they ALL should be getting better. If they are passing in scrimmages, then we should be getting reducing turnovers. Instead we are have an increasing number.

I've always been told Sherri and the staff run hard practices. Clearly, even for a young team as this, not hard enough.

If we need to put Penzo back in the starting line-up to reduce the turnover numbers, we should do it. We lose scoring, but Hell, no one is scoring much anyway except for Robertson.

The Sooners composite free throw percentage for the last 5 seasons is 71.8% and our TO's are 16.0. YTD the Sooners are shooting .551 from the line and our TO's are 23.2/g.

Logical to expect the TO's to be up with the inexperience this club has but up 45% is rediculous. Cut our TO's to 20 which is only a 25% increase over the historical average and shoot 71.8% from the line we average a little over 6 points a game more assuming we maintain our .458 field goal percentage.

Both of these should be doable. Had we scored 6 more points in each game this year we would be 4-2 instead of 2-4. The question is will this team significantly improve in either area.

We need to if we are going to go 2-3 before the start of the conference. At 4-7 to start the conference we are going to have to go 12-6 in the conference to be to the 16 wins we had last year. That is going to be a long stretch.

Based on what we are seeing from this team at this time 8-10 will be about what I expect tops or at least hope for. And nobody is going to be happy with a 12-17 regular season going into the Big 12.

I'm usually a half full person but we were awful last night. Only a solid 4th quarter kept us from having over 30 turnovers. 14 blocked shots and we just kept putting up prayers in the paint. Most of the time it was a disaster when the ball went into the paint either by dribbling or passing.

Defensively we never seemed to find the player that was killing us.

Above all the thing that bugged me the most was the numerous times they got easy baskets by simply beating us down the court. Even after free throws. Either bad communication or bad effort.

On the positive side even though Simpson had a rough night, The young lady hustles. Rarely do you see someone of that size and footspeed be the first down the court. She has a number of fast break layups this year. But she can't play 35+ minutes a game.

A ray of sunlight was that Lampkin began to show that she can perform at this level. Thought she should have played more.

Robertson solid as usual. She seems to already be acclimated to the game at this level. Good news is that she gets shots off against teams with quicker players.

So far the good news is that we have not lost to a team as weak as some we lost to last year. Sherri usually has a tough early season and when we are in despair they suddenly improve enough to get to the to half of the league standings. hopefully we will see the usual after Christmas improvement by this gang.

Sherri has always urged her players to push the envelope, thus the high level of turnovers. Must be overwhelming to green freshman players.

I get wanting a tough schedule, but with such a young team this is not helping us. Young players can get discouraged easily and this would hurt hem even more! Having a horrible record pre and post conference season may be just what we need for this program...still kind of upsetting that teams like Oklahoma State are 5-0 and have played basically zero decent teams and above us in standings/rankings and most likely morale. I sincerely hope things turn around quickly. I can definitely understand why some of these big recruits went elsewhere at this point.

I also thought Nydia demonstrated more of a possibility that she might be effective at some point this year. She was on the court for much of the comeback, without her usual mistakes. She had four rebounds and a steal in the fourth quarter.

Mandy doesn't look like she is effective on defense. But, she is getting 8.0 points and 7.8 rebounds, shooting OK. She is a role player. But, she is a lot better than I thought she would be this year (based on last year).

Madi and Taylor are doing pretty well. Madi is 14.2 and 10.3, leads the team in blocks with six, tied for second in steals with seven. Taylor leads in everything in scoring.

Tatum actually leads in assists and 3pt%, although only on eleven shots. Murcer is doing OK for a freshman.

That's about it. We should be able to depend on Ana when she gets back. But, we essentially have:

Freshmen: Madi, Taylor, Tatum, Jessi, and, maybe, Nydia.
Sophomores: Shaina, Mandy, Ana.

Shaina has been rather non-productive in our four losses.

When I watch the girls' eyes after a turnover, it looks like frustration, like "not again." But, it also appears to be a total lack of awareness that led to the turnover. Someone is trapped, and nobody comes to help. Someone passes without looking, often to someone that they thought might be moving there, but with no actual movement. They look tired when they make some of those bad passes on fast breaks. Why is Shaina not downcourt on those breaks, all alone. We don't need her 3.3 boards per game under the rim. It means more points on the fly.

We are rebounding as well as our opponents in the games that we lose, It is usually + or -- two. Madi and Mandy are apparently enough, for now. Nydia may help.

If you are looking for Sherri to leave, forget it. She has a good class coming in next year. Chloe will have the opportunity to work with the team this Spring. Liz and Gabby should merge into a team that has a bit more experience than this year's team did. Three more people who can play, all with some height. Sherri isn't going anywhere.

And, no, the boosters won't be demanding that she leave. There were no boosters until she came.
