Re: UTSA game Thur!
Reeves deserved a lot of criticism last year. Very inefficient player and fans were disappointed that an alleged great shooter was shooting terrible for most of the season
Which player on last year's team was perfect, or even close to it? None, of course, but somehow most of them rarely if ever came in for heated criticism. It was all about Reaves (as it's all about some player or other almost every season).
And it is simply unfair to rail against an individual's players faults, while ignoring those faults in other players or, worse, ignoring that player's other notable contributions to the team.
Last season, Reaves ranked:
--tied for 1st in games played
--first in minutes per game
--2nd in points per game (just 1 point behind Doo)
--3rd in rebounds per game
--1st in assists per game
--2nd in steals per game (just .3 behind Doo)
--1st in free throw percentage, by more than 5 percentage points
On the downside, his shooting numbers were low and he had too many turnovers (but he had only .4 more turnovers per game than Doo, and I don't recall anyone ragging on Doo about it).
Sorry, but it's hard to take seriously any poster who has consistently ragged on Reaves for his disappointing shooting numbers last season, but ignored the above contributions.
Yes, we all want Reaves to shoot better this year -- Austin wants it more than any of us, I feel confident in saying. But to focus only on his shortcomings and to ignore all the ways he excelled and the undeniably key role he played on last year's team is ... well, I'll just say it says more about the critic than the one being criticized.
Let's remember that Reaves made the preseason All Big 12 team this season, which suggests that D1 coaches recognize his talents and contributions, even if the "experts" here don't.
