Head Coach Lon Kruger
Opening Statement:
“Good first test away from home. I thought our guys opened cautiously and then got more comfortable as the game went along. Defensively in the second half, we were much more comfortable than in the first half. It’s the first one of three (games) in four days so it’s good to get off to a good start.
“Calvin (Newell) hit some huge shots for us. We need that from Calvin. He’s a guy that can attack and be aggressive. He can score quickly and that’s what he does best. That’s his role. He hit some big shots to keep us in the ball game in the first half and some big shots to create the margin in the second.
“You think of Steve (Pledger) making shots but Steve has such a good feel for the game and he ties things together for the team defensively for the whole group. He can rebound the ball well and he has good size. Obviously, he’s going to make shots for us and we need that but we need all the other things he brings for us as well.”

On making three steals:
“It was just a matter of being in the right place at the right time. We talked about moving your feet and just play the passing lanes, play to help. You get a lot of steals on playing help, too. I was trying to play the help because they were guarding me skin-tight on the other end. I just knew I had to bring it on the defensive end today.”

On scoring 18 points:
“It starts with my teammates first. While I’m sitting on the bench I watch. I watch the other team and see what I can bring to the game. Every time I come in I want to bring intensity so I started with my defense and my defense led to offense.”

“Oklahoma really had their way with us in the second half. They executed well on the offensive end. They were very efficient defensively and played with a lot of energy, and took us out of the game. I thought they did a nice job of maintaining ball pressure. There were some times when we coughed it on our own. We didn’t handle the ball well or make complete passes. They were relentless with their effort, we put our tail between our legs when things didn’t go well, which surprised me as we have a lot of upperclassmen and we need to bounce back from certain possessions and still be able to compete. I think we got frustrated.
“Really what we saw of Oklahoma is what we thought. They’re strong, aggressive, they play solid basketball on both sides of the court, and they’re very well coached.”

“I feel like in the second half, our intensity wasn’t kept up. Couple possessions didn’t go our way and a lot of us had our heads down. Basketball is a game of possessions and I felt we tried to get everything done quickly instead of possession by possession.”
