Our Girls vs. Purple Frogs

I don’t disagree with your last two comments, but I do with your first. You can rightly guard someone without fouling them. It’s done every game by every team.

No question you can tightly guard an individual player and you can tightly guard a team without fouling.

The top 3 ranked teams in defensive scoring were Baylor 55.8 p/g, WVU 62.1 and Texas 63.4. However Baylor (472) committed 11.2% fewer fouls than did either WVU (531) or Texas (531). Also if you compare fouls committed vs opponents fouls committed Baylor fouled 81.4% as frequently as their opponents. WVU 110.6% more frequently and Texas 99% as often.

It is interesting that the best defense in the conference also is the defense that fouls the least. I assume it is a result of practicing and implementing sound defensive fundamentals such as moving their feet, maintaining the proper position and not reaching.

A strong indication of the weakness of this team is when we talk about the fundamental failures of two of our seniors playing in the first round of the conference tournament. Those are the player that are supposed to step up when the going gets tough and win you games in the conference tournament. Unfortunately we are who we are. And that is not going to change.

I got to sit with some Baylor fans today and surprisingly a very nice experience. They really wanted to play us again in the semi's. They actually loved Vivi and thought she got royally screwed on two of those flop calls. We were in agreement that the officiating has only gotten worse in Women's basketball over the past few years. However:

The reason we lost today really was two fold. Again we can't seem to guard the 3 point line and worse I stopped counting after we missed our 10th layup. This team just thinks throwing up to the rim and you will get an automatic foul called.
I blame coaching and kids both for not working on the most basic of fundamentals at the rim. We only had 11 turnovers, we played solid defense the second half, we had the chances, but again can't hit the 2 footers.

I will be shocked if this team gets in the NCAA, I don't think they have done enough to get in. Yes, they have the 2nd toughest schedule and a 29 rpi, but they also have 14 losses. I don't think they deserve it. JMHO.

You make some good points. But you ignored one key point: One particular official was assigned to call the games. He has called 3 of our games this year. We have lost all 3. We simply find it almost impossible to win when he is on the court. And additionally, Vivi fouled out of all 3 games he called - and Ana had huge foul problems in the 2 of the games he called. Other than those 3 games, although I 'm not certain, I'm not sure Vivi fouled out all year. Certainly not even in the vicinity of 100% of the other games. As soon as he stepped on the court, it was clear - if you follow the stats - that we would have fouling problems.

Not to argue with you, but I did mention the officiating was horrible, however you make your layups, you take bad officiating out of the equation, that is at least 20 points we left on the floor.
