Painter to Mizzou!!

Why would Painter leave his alma mater?
Mizzou is not a better job than Purdue.
Seems like a dumb move.

Mizzou is loaded next season, has a brand new gym, they sell-out at home, and they want to pay him over $2 million a year.

Who knows. Does Painter have a bad relationship with his AD? Otherwise, if the money is not drastically different, and it does not sound like it will be, I can't fathom why he would leave Purdue.

I will bet that Painter turns down Mizzou after he gets back home, gets over the high of being courted, realizes that MU just got him a big raise at home, and his pulse rate gets back under 100 beats/minute.

As important as that stuff is, I think the most important thing is Purdue seeming lack of respect for the basketball program. Not only is Painter underpaid, but his staff is criminally underpaid. One report mentioned that Mizzou offered 2.2/year, but he asked them to shave 200k of that to pay his assistants.

Purdue is on the verge of being the 3rd best program in Indiana. # of Final Fours for Butler: 2. # of Final Fours for Purdue: 0. If Butler pulls off the title this year--not unrealistic--the Bulldogs will easily leapfrog Purdue in b-ball relevance in Indiana.

Purdue has to compete with the Hoosiers for the one-and-done, two-and-done NBA lottery pick McD AA recruits, and with Butler for the 3 year, 4 year solid basketball player recruits. At some point, Indiana will get back to where it should be, and if Butler wins the title...Purdue is left behind in its own state. It's a crappy situation to be in. And have to deal with MSU, tOSU, Wisconsin, Illinois, and a resurgent Michigan in the Big 10.

Mizzou has no in-state competition for recruiting. The Big 12 is in flux, quality wise, and there is no program other than Kansas that has won a national title in our lifetime. To be #2 in the Big 12, right now, you just need to outcoach Rick Barnes--which isn't THAT hard--and fend off Martin from KSU, who lacks the resources of Mizzou.

Because of all this, Mizzou has a higher ceiling for sustainable success than Purdue. Particularly if Butler cuts down the nets.

Painter wants to be at a program he knows is committed to winning. He obviously loves Purdue, but his relationship with their AD isn't the best and he has been significantly underpaid. He had to fight hard last year to get the raise he got, and he's still one of the lowest paid coaches in the conference. In addition to that, his assistants are also among the lowest (if not the lowest), and apparently they cannot even get a raise unless the women's basketball assistants do, as well.

But it's not just about his salary. It's about everything relating to AD (and state-wide) support for the program. He's spent time over the past few days talking to coaches (high school and AAU) around Missouri to get a feel for the state and how it supports Mizzou.

He obviously wants to go to a program where he can build something, a place that WANTS to build something. Mizzou definitely wants to do that and will give the right coach whatever he needs to get it done.

And even though Purdue apparently has put a major offer on the table (which I suspect is inflated... $2.3 is probably the max with incentives, not the guarantee), he has to wonder where that money was last year after he'd already won COY twice at Purdue.

I think if Painter leaves, Purdue becomes a major player for Indiana homegrown boy, Brad Stevens.

Makes sense.
Maybe Joe C should have called Painter first.

Don't forget Notre Dame. They are probably equal to Purdue as a program and definitely a lot more resources so they may be bumped down to number 4!

I think Purdue is already 3rd. Behind IU and Notre Dame.

Then, why is he considering Mizzou? Seriously, Mike Alden is not committed to winning, at least not from where I sit.
