Patillo

Patillo.much like Maze was booted for behavior issues not talent. The fact that Capel ran a tighter ship than his predecessors is underappreciated. Tubbs and Sampson would not have booted those guys.

And thats why Capel got the boot...b/c he did run a tighter ship. Pattillo would have made a huge difference on last years team. Maze would have been huge for us during his 4 years here.

Unless your bringing in All Americans every year, running a tight ship will get you fired. I know Sean Sutton had issues but him running a tight ship ruined his chances of making it to the Tournament and securing his job. Jamaal Brown, Torree Johnson, and Gary Flowers were missing links to his teams success. Brown stayed at the school and he still wouldn't let him stay on the team.

Guys like Calipari, have 2 one and done players on his team. I'm willing to bet that Jones and Knight aren't even going to class.

Pretty sure Kelvin coulda used Rashaad Carruth, Lou Moore, JR Raymond, Jabahri Brown...

Capel got the boot cause he was an east coast elitist who has no idea how to run a basketball team at this level

He got fired for signing 24 guys and 12 were run by year 2, plus a terrible 2 year run with no talent on the roster. Plus potential NCAA issues. It was a no brainer. This program was burned to the ground.

Besides Pattillo and Maze, who did he cutt ties with that you miss so much????

That talent bolted for the D League.

You give OU just 1 of those 3 and we make the tournament this year. Give OU 2, and we finish in the top 3. If all 3 returned, we win the conference or come real close.

What looks better
Blair, Davis, Pledger, Clark, Fitz, (Wash, Newell, and Neal coming off the bench)
or
TMG, Warren, Davis, Fitz, Gallon, (Clark, Pledger, Blair, Wash, and Neal coming off the Bench)

This is the first time I have heard "Capel recruited a bunch of untalented players he had to kick off the team" as a defense of him.

I know, Capel made his own bed and was fired because of what he did. It's his fault that he couldn't recruit.

Capel getting booted for running too tight a ship is one of the wildest spins of the truth I've ever read.

Capel got fired for 3 reasons. One the boosters and two his recruiting results last year and this year were dismal. Three was the importance of the new Network deal mandated a strong basketball product and that looked bleak under Capel. Had we not had the pending Network looming I think he keeps his job.

Ok, we are all impressed that Patillo was the 3rd leading scorer leading Western Kentucky to a 16-16 record against the likes of Denver, Arkansas State and Florida Atlantic. But I wonder if people remember that in his short career at OU our record was a heck of a lot better without him.

19-1 (95%) - 2009 Record without Juan Patillo
11-5 (68%) - 2009 Record with Juan Patillo

5 out of our 6 losses that year were after he joined the team. In nearly all our big wins he either barely touched the floor or didn't play (Purdue, Davidson, Texas, Michigan, Syracuse)

I know everybody remembers the fancy dunks he had after being left open as the 5th option against OSU and Baylor, but shortly after he burst on the scene after realizing that he better play now or he would flunk out and never get to play at OU, he had three consecutive games (all losses) to Texas, Kansas and Missouri where he managed to put up whopping 13 turnovers in less than 20 mpg. Add to that in possibly the two biggest wins in the Capel era (NCAA tourney wins vs Michigan and Syracuse) Patillo barely touched the floor (4 mins) but still managed to turn the ball over 3 times.

Remember him as fondly as you want, but what I remember is that the guy had no hands and no brains.

19-1 consisted mainly of non conference schedule
the 5 losses were to UNC, KU, TEX, OSU, and Missouri...all of which were tournament teams. If you want to put more stock in the records, then realize who we played. And that record would have been better if we didn't lose Blake for the Tex and KU game. Also, if we don't lose those games, we don't play UNC before the final 4.

Patillo made an early splash, but quickly experienced a BIG dropoff.

Good for him, and all, but he should have put in more effort while he was in Norman.

Watched he and the Hilltoppers play a few times this year, Juan doesn't play any defense and only participates offensively when he has the ball.
