That’s so strange. Everyone thought he was retiring.

When it happened, it felt, to me anyway, like Notre Dame pushing him out. I just saw Brey at Sand Springs/Bixby a couple of weeks ago. He looked spry and was, obviously, recruiting.

It'll be interesting to see who wants him. Will it be a smaller school like Iona (Pitino-style) that he tries to build up or maybe a school like Stanford who could have an opening.

He obviously decided he wanted to blow up a program faster, and in more dramatic fashion, than his former boss, Gregg Marshall. Quite a culture Marshall created.

In lieu of charges being dropped, I added Chris Beard to the candidate list.

It'll be interesting to see what happens with him and who will hire him.

Crap human but a heck of a coach.

I think he will be persona non grata for quite a while. Gregg Marshall was never arrested or investigated for a crime, but once people learned what a horrible person he was, he was done. I live three or four miles from him and am close friends with his neighbors, and I’ve not heard any rumors of schools interested in him. With Beard, the (rightfully) increased scrutiny on domestic violence in recent years just makes it seem like any D-1 school would be very unlikely to consider him.

some rumors...

Rick Pitino is a candidate for St. John's, South Florida, and/or Georgetown.

It's not surprising but South Florida and/or Georgetown will likely fire their head coaches, especially GTOWN. I guess it's somewhat surprising that St. John's is willing to pay Mike Anderson's buyout. I'm still surprised STJ hired him when they did. He's always been an average HC and you don't hire him if you want to truly win. ADs make some stupid as* decisions.

Ed Cooley (Providence HC) is a primary target for GTOWN as well.

To a lesser degree, I've seen Mike Brey mentioned for GTOWN also...but I think they know they need to go bigger than Brey. That would be a hard sell.

Manhattan will likely make their interim, RaShawn Stores, their permanent HC. He's doing well given the circumstances.

I don't see the situations as exactly parallel. Both seem to be terrible humans, sure, but it's much easier for an AD to hire someone like Beard who's troubles are outside of basketball. Marshall was accused of player abuse. That's a non-starter for so many ADs. What Beard did was terrible but some will see it as correctable and probably inquire about anger management or marital counseling, etc. Plus, let's be real, Beard is currently thought of as a really good coach. A coach who has never won less than 18 games. Look at Texas this year. Terry gets some credit for stabilization but most of the credit goes to Beard for the roster rebuild. Texas is loaded with talent. There are several ADs out there who will look past the choke/domestic abuse to win games. IMO. While Marshall is/was a good coach, his Wichita State time started to tail off and Marshall never proved it at a high major.

Ole Miss is at the bottom of the proverbial ladder. There’s nowhere to fall. The arena is dead, the atmosphere is akin to a funeral at home games. It really can’t get worse. Beard’s won everywhere he’s ever been. It’s not a stretch to believe he’d have success at Ole Miss. Two college basketball coaching sources connected to Beard told RebelGrove.com Beard would be very interested in the Ole Miss job should it come open.

I'm not living in New Mexico at this point, but I am amazed that the shooting didn't cost that idiot his job. It was, from what I've heard, a total cover-up of a fatal shooting. Technically, it was self-defense, but the thug in question had a gun with him in his Albuquerque hotel room and snuck out of there in the middle of the night (thinking he was going to hook up with a UNM coed).

NMSU is making big noises about being embarrassed about the conduct of its coach and players, but they'd probably put up with it if they were winning. They had a total "outlaw program" roughly 30 years ago, and it took an academic scandal to put an end to that. And that scumbag coach they had tried to sue for wrongful termination.

I'm only mildly surprised they aren't pushing for Chris Beard. That would be NMSU's speed.

I remember when the shooting happened. I thought it was a tough deal but figured the coaches would survive if they had no knowledge, etc. Like a one-time tragic event (events if you include the fight at the football game that started the mess).

But then as the news was breaking back then, I read that someone on the coaching staff helped hide the gun. That was when I figured they would all be gone. I assume all this hazing stuff has been uncovered as further evidence to warrant the firing with cause.

I don't envy the next coach. He'll have a tough rebrand/rebuild.

While Chris Beard has been talked about, I would label Dusty May (FAU) as the early favorite.
