Phantom foul

Does someone actually "chart" the officials and the fouls they call?

At one point with about 7 or 8 minutes left in the game, during a time out, an upset Coach Kruger APPEARED to point out to the "skinny" official that he had not called even one foul on KU. My lip-reading is not the best, but my seats are down low across from the OU bench and I had a very good view.

Late in the game, it seemed the older balding official was the only one of the three officials with the stones to call a foul on KU. My lip-reading abilities are certainly good enough to "read" the cuss words flowing from Bill Self following a call or two from the older official.

KU certainly has the best basketball program in the Big-12, but I am convinced the beak-peckers get more than their fair share of calls from the officials. Obviously I am biased, but it seems to me that KU often gets favorable calls in Big-12 games even when OU is not the opponent.

Regardless, it is always good to beat the beaks.

I'm not sure how they evaluate high D1 referees. I only did HS where coaches sent in a grade and had the ability to blackball a ref from doing games for their school. I know the Big 12 has a supervisor of officials. I would guess they review video of games with a purpose of evaluating officials and giving them feedback. The coaches give feedback to the supervisor, too. Lon gets a say.

A problem is refereeing is part-time and a hobby and a lot of good refs have 9-5 40 hour jobs and can't travel to games, so they can't call college ball.... Or want to take away from their families on weekends. My wife didn't want me calling as much as I did..... Usually 3 sometimes 4 times a week. AAU ball could easily schedule a ref for 6-8 games a day on weekends. I ended up turning down a lot of assignments.

Ada and a couple of others on here were referees too. It's not easy. Physically or emotionally.

As someone who has seen KU play over 200 times, not all against OU, and most in either Lawrence or KC, I will agree they get the calls. I've seen some hose jobs that would make your head spin. The funny thing is that even while the calls are going their way the Sqwak fans still think they're getting screwed.
