pick 2002 through 2013 ou all star team

Denver, you'll notice that I took what you said and framed it to fit the TMG we all came to know.

There is no doubt that he could have had an outstanding future as a point guard at the college level. Unfortunately, the ego and attitude you mentioned, along with a few other negatives I could list, overshadowed his God-given talents as a basketball player.

I will always believe that our three burger boys that year would have been just fine under different circumstances. But, playing on the same team for a coach who didn't have the experience or the administrative skills to handle selfish, me-first players with one foot already out the door, was a recipe for disaster. And, as we all know, that is exactly how what should have been a great season turned out.

I can't Believe Calipari couldn't get pass the 1st round of the NIT with five plus McD AA. Not enough experience or administrative skills? Do tell me your theory on that team and Calipari.

What does Calipari and Kentucky have to do with OU's 2011 season? You missed my point entirely. Nothing new, I might add, you put your Capel blinders on at even the hint that someone may be criticizing him.

My point is simply this. Capel had the misfortune of trying to control three selfish, self-centered players on his team that year. Correction. Two of the three couldn't even spell team, much less understand the concept.

WW was the least of Jeff's worries. TMG and Tiny were the main problem. They couldn't get along with each other, and they danged sure couldn't get along with someone they didn't like (Willie in case you missed my point again). But the fact remains that Capel did a poor job of managing and coaching an ultra-talented group of kids who were good enough to make a deep run in the NCAA tourney. When a team with three McDonald's AA and a perfectly capable supporting cast finishes the season with a 14-18 record (5-11 in conference), something is definitely wrong.

It wasn't just the losing record, though. There were reports that year of embarrassing situations on and off of the court involving several players, not to mention an assistant who got his coach and the school that paid his salary in trouble with the NCAA. It was a bad deal all around, and one I never want to see again.

NIT is still better the the garbage Caple, Warren, TMG, and Tiny put out there that year

Please don't tell me that's your comeback argument to the most underachieving OU team by far in my nearly 40 years as an OU fan. Look, I was in Coach Capel's corner for the most part, and even voted in one of these polls to keep him one more year. Still, that 2010 team was a train wreck in its worst form.

Anyway, my all OU team for that era does not include a natural "3", so I'm sliding Ace into that spot. I liked Ebi Ere, but he disappeared for way too many games during the second half of his senior year.

Q White
H Price
Ace
R Osby
B Griffin

Picking a 3, whether a SF or another wing G in this time period is tough. Also, if not for Q, PG is tough to pick. Says a lot about where our recruiting has faltered, IMO. Not enough impact players/stars at those spots.

He was "hurt". I'm not going to hold that against him.

If that's the case, then it's understandable. However, that wasn't really common knowledge back then. I was in Albany for the Sweet 16 and Elite Eight games. Ebi went off against Butler, and after the game, Kelvin was quoted as saying to him "Welcome back to OU basketball." With a gimpy Hollis, we neded Ebi to have a repeat performance against Syracuse, but that never materialized.

Possible I'm mis-remembering, but I thought he played the 2nd half of his senior season with a banged up finger. Similar to Michael Neal's senior season.

You have such OU blinders! Warren was hurt most of the season. That means tony Crocker was our only returning starter with a banged up Warren. And not too mention, the big 12 was extremely tough that year...not like how it was this past year or next year.

Kentucky had 6 McDAA. They played in a horrible SEC conference and managed to lose in the first round of the NIT. And only a healthy Warren could have started for this years Kentucky squad.

I like Corey Brewer as my backup pg behind White

Brewer was at OU prior to the original posters parameters or he would have made my starting backcourt.

Corey Brewer deserves his own thread. I loved watching that guy play. I was a ball boy for the team his senior year when his finger got dislocated against Texas. It was pointing 90 degrees from where it should be and he popped it back in and kept playing. Maybe 2% of today's players would do that.

Dude was nails. I think if I was putting a Kelvin Sampson team together (based on toughness and not necessarily talent), it would be:

1. Q - hard nosed, tough, defended at a high level, didn't turn it over.
2. Hollis - had a tooth removed from his elbow. Nuff said.
3. Brewer - see above
4. Nolan Johnson - don't think he can play the 4? You tell him.
5. Ernie Abercrombie - 6-4 but averaged double figure rebounds his SR season

This team wouldn't win by scoring more points. The other team would tap out.

Nah, Eddie Najera wouldn't be playing over one of those guys, Nah.

Sam,
Obviously he would. Honestly, I was really looking at guys that really got by mostly on grit. Ed had much more natural talent than these guys, IMO and based on his time in the league. None of these guys sniffed the NBA or were good enough to be recruited by the likes of Duke. Hollis and Brewer had a long careers overseas or in minor leagues but hopefully you get my point.

Another Sampson guy I considered was Johnnie Gilbert. All these guys were just Sampson ball players. We need more like them. Selfless, tough. Ro would have fit.
