Pokes/bears

OSU has made tons of deep runs recently, you got us there. By this time next week, Boynton will have finally coached in one more NCAA tournament game than all of us on the board!

Also, if you worry so much about what I think, is is that tough to at least accurately summarize my position?

Well, poke coach has won half (2 in yr ONE) of Kruger’s wins (4 out of TEN years)
Guessing that’s a pretty good start.

Speaking of.... The fact Jalen hill starts games and is regular rotation yet contributes nothing tells me a lot about Issanza and Garang

The only thing I’ve said is Kruger isn’t worth 14th highest paid coach... tell me why he is?

Come on man. 5 of our 6 leading scorers are upperclassmen and we've got a GREAT 15-10(9-9) record while losing 5 of our last 6. It's only year 10 for Lon, we need to wait for him to get his players in here before we expect better than 14th highest paid coach results. We've got one really good underclassman averaging 13 a game and the next best three averaging 4, 3, and 3. The future is looking bright.

I honestly don’t know what you mean by this? He has half as many wins as Lon? Half as many NCAA bids?

As for salary, the USA Today list published this week lists him 24th in total pay among coaches. Among those ahead of him are Buzz Williams, Tom Crean, Archie Miller, Bruce Pearl, Fred Hoiberg, Chris Mack, Jamie Dixon, Mick Cronin, Ed Cooley, and Andy Enfeld. None of those guys can match his career track record, and most of them can’t even come close even if you just focus on the past few years, which is the period people criticize Lon about. Buzz is much better at calling attention to himself, and Pearl is good at getting in trouble with the NCAA and being a sleaze ball. Archie can’t manage to get a near blue blood to the tournament and is in jeopardy of being fired. Dixon ... enough said. If you think you can come up with 20 or more better coaches than Lon, feel free to try. If you want to include guys like Boynton who yet to show that he can build a consistent winner and who wouldn’t have even been in this conversation TWO WEEKS AGO, you’re free to have they opinion. I place a greater value on sustained success and a proven track record. After all, after year three at OU, Capel had a lot of people convinced he was a good coach. Then the best player in the county left, the rest of the hyped recruits imploded, and the program was in ruins.

If I thought Kruger moving on would result in more success for the program, I’d be the first to thank him and say it’s time to make the change. I just think that if he were forced out, there is a much higher likelihood that the program would get worse rather than better. Maybe we would catch lightning in a bottle, but when the floor of your program is currently being a tourney team, it is a huge gamble. People can point to Howard and say why can’t we do that. For every Howard, there are several guys who come in and flop. Pat Ewing and Chris Mullen are two obvious ones. And Howard also was a very highly respected NBA assistant for several years before going to Michigan.

The number of games we've finished out of 1st place in Lon's 10 years: 11, 3, 2, 1, 3, 7, 5, 7, 8, 4

So we've been competitive for the regular season title in 2 out of 10 years. And we're 1 of 3 teams to not even play for a tournament title along with Tech and TCU.

With Cunningham, I guess we'll find out soon whether this OSU team is going to be more like 2003 Syracuse (and Carmelo Anthony) or 2007 Texas (and Kevin Durant). It could go either way...but right now, they're looking more like 2003 Syracuse. I still think the Zags are cutting down the nets, but OSU fans have a lot to be excited about right now.

Fantastic post with some perspective. I always think of teams like Arizona, UCLA, Indiana, et al who have much better program histories/fan support/bagmen and still cant come close to our success under Lon.

You corrected me on the osu coach's time. My bad. I tried to find how long he has been there. He had 2 Bg12 tournament wins, this yr...kruger has 4 in 10 years.

As far as salary...I googled it..the one I saw had him 14th (actually 15th but wsu's coach was 14th but he's gone.)

Just saw another list had him 24th. My feeling is he's still not producing top 25th results...
