I honestly don’t know what you mean by this? He has half as many wins as Lon? Half as many NCAA bids?
As for salary, the USA Today list published this week lists him 24th in total pay among coaches. Among those ahead of him are Buzz Williams, Tom Crean, Archie Miller, Bruce Pearl, Fred Hoiberg, Chris Mack, Jamie Dixon, Mick Cronin, Ed Cooley, and Andy Enfeld. None of those guys can match his career track record, and most of them can’t even come close even if you just focus on the past few years, which is the period people criticize Lon about. Buzz is much better at calling attention to himself, and Pearl is good at getting in trouble with the NCAA and being a sleaze ball. Archie can’t manage to get a near blue blood to the tournament and is in jeopardy of being fired. Dixon ... enough said. If you think you can come up with 20 or more better coaches than Lon, feel free to try. If you want to include guys like Boynton who yet to show that he can build a consistent winner and who wouldn’t have even been in this conversation TWO WEEKS AGO, you’re free to have they opinion. I place a greater value on sustained success and a proven track record. After all, after year three at OU, Capel had a lot of people convinced he was a good coach. Then the best player in the county left, the rest of the hyped recruits imploded, and the program was in ruins.
If I thought Kruger moving on would result in more success for the program, I’d be the first to thank him and say it’s time to make the change. I just think that if he were forced out, there is a much higher likelihood that the program would get worse rather than better. Maybe we would catch lightning in a bottle, but when the floor of your program is currently being a tourney team, it is a huge gamble. People can point to Howard and say why can’t we do that. For every Howard, there are several guys who come in and flop. Pat Ewing and Chris Mullen are two obvious ones. And Howard also was a very highly respected NBA assistant for several years before going to Michigan.
