Porter to.........Villanova???

He’s the head coach in waiting at Houston. Why would he?

I don’t have a strong opinion on Kellen and I don’t get the people who do. What makes them so sure he will suck or be good as a HC?
That's what I am saying, he's waiting on his dad to retire.

My thing for Hodgson is he's an ace recruiter and he's done well at Arkansas State the last two years.

I like Trilly for his inside info. He's on the money most of the time.

Asking him who OU should hire? Lol, nah (I would say the same about myself, obviously).

Hodge, according to rumors, is contemplating leaving his HC job for an assistant role. He's been trying to get another HC job. Unsuccessfully.

OU can do better. Want to trigger me (lol)? Bring up Kellen as the OU HC. Just keep Moser, chit.

Drives me nuts too. Would be one thing if he leaves Houston and has success as head coach elsewhere but a number of years and then he’s hired here. Until that happens, all credit to Kelvin for what’s been accomplished at HOU.

And better fan support… And a better facility…

Someone I know who knows people around Porter told me halfway through the year that Porter needs to go somewhere where basketball is a priority. It sounded like he had heard that through his network, and I don’t disagree.

OU fans have blue blood expectations at a tier 2 basketball school. And that’s just the truth.
I'm not going to dispute your sources but it's humorous to me. I remember Porter Moser's press conferences when he first got hired lauding Lon Kruger and the Oklahoma basketball program. He mentioned how Lon had got the program to a very respectable position, and he wanted to take it to the next level. He also mentioned the fan base and how important it was to get fans into the games. He knew exactly what he was walking into when he got hired. Fast forward four years when it's clear he may not be up to the task and now he "needs to go to a basketball school." It's nothing but excuses coming out of the Moser camp. "The committee screwed us," "I don't have enough NIL money," etc. The guy has been coaching like over twenty years and is a .500 coach. Doesn't matter if it's a basketball school or not. You can throw him millions and millions of dollars and that won't change a thing.

And as was pointed out earlier this week he just made his THIRD dance in 21 years. Talk about over hyped.

The men's basketball program at OU is held to the same standard by the fan base as the football program: win big, preferably competing for national championships. Unlike football, the basketball program is not supported by fans, donors, or administrators at the same level.

This jives with everything we've seen. Porter is a good man. He's a decent coach, not great. We could do worse and may end up doing worse.

It's just not a fit for him here. He's lost the fan base and the donors. He has 3 years left on his deal...I'd be surprised if Joe C. wanted to extend him. He'd do better somewhere else.

If he goes somewhere else, I wish him well.

We spent 25 years as a top 10-15 program when we had the right coach. And we did it twice in a row, and kept them both for over a decade, so you can't say it's not replicable. We've had four coaches spanning four different decades that have made Elite 8 runs, and had Capel faced anybody other than the eventual champs, all would have made the Final 4.

Our expectations are set by a precedent that was set time and time again over decades. OU is not a worse place to coach now than it was in the 80s, 90s, 2000s, or 2010s. I'd actually argue that being in the SEC, with all the TV money, there's never been a better time to be OU's coach. You just actually have to do the coaching part.

Bryan Hodgson >>>> Kellen Sampson

Has Kellen even tried to get a head coaching job since he's been at Houston with his dad?
Curious why you guys like Hodgson so much… not judging just do not know much about him at all.

And it doesn’t have a championship history.

And yes, I understand that football always has and always will be supported more strongly than basketball. The same was grumbled about during the Tubbs and Sampson eras. The same is also true of all but about five power conference programs in the entire country. Alabama absolutely cares more about football than basketball, but that hasn't kept them from perenially being in the top 10. I'd argue that the only teams that care more about basketball in the entire SEC are UK and possibly Arkansas, though Arkansas is more out of desperation because their attempts at football keep falling flat.

Three of our last five coaches were hall of fame coaches. Two of them weren’t “fits” here.

exactly..the proof is that Tubbs, Sampson, Capel (hard to believe/that's how good Blake was), and Kruger can make at least 1 decent run at a final 4 in their tenures as head coach at Oklahoma. Not asking for more than that, but that is a reasonable standard for a coach at OU that coaches more than 8-10 seasons at OU.

Alabama wasn’t competitive in basketball until it started investing in basketball. Same with Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia, etc. See a common theme?

why no mention of Hollis Price, only Kellen. Quanna's got his shot w/ Louisiana. Personally I would want someone with experience but just curious why Price never gets talked about

This is all true. The bar has been set high. The fan base remembers OU winning big.

Can we attract that kind of coach (or one with that kind of potential) in the NIL/transfer portal era? Is OU willing or able to pay to win at previous levels? That remains to be seen.

Kellen is a dork and would not be respected at all. He got picked on at his dad's own father son camp. And wouldn't you know it, he's still nepoing around under his dad

Last paragraph is wild and categorically false. This board is the most rabid fans and we were hoping simply for a tourney birth. Get real
