Coach Kruger lets me get away with asking a lot of odd ball questions. But, I will never ask questions about starters, rotations, game strategy, or anything along that vein. I think that if did, I would be on the fast track to getting no information. There is a question along that line that I would like to ask. But, I won't.

That question is, why does Austin Mankin get so many practice reps with the
1's, but yet, never plays. Today was not unusual. Austin was the 1st player to rotate in with the first teamers. He rotated in before Tyler or Booker or Bennett. After coming out, he was the 1st to rotate back in. Other than the 5 starters, he had more red shirt time than anyone else. Austin does a good job when he is in there.

The start of today's practice was the same. They ran a lot and they ran hard. Today was a shorter version. They wanted to get out of town early enough to beat any bad weather. Also, Lattin has a game in Houston today at 4:30 that the staff wants to make.

Early in the practice they spent maybe 10/15 minutes practicing the lob to the rim for the back door cutter. That is something that I have rarely seen them actually practice. I guess that since they muffed 3/4 of them against the last opponent, some clean up work was in order.

After that they went into some very spirited half court defensive drills similar to yesterdays work. They looked good today. Better than yesterday. They were almost always switching on time and in time throughout.

From the defensive drills they moved on to a controlled full court scrimmage. What I am referring to as a controlled scrimmage is when Coach Kruger will stop the action frequently for teaching. And when action restarts, they will go from mid court after the defense has had time to set.

They finished up with a series of one minute games. These games are very entertaining and their purpose is to set up a variety of late clock/game situations for the team to practice. They don't do these all of the time. But, it is fun for the fans when they do.

For the most part, it was the usual suspects that looked good in practice. Bennett did fumble away a couple of passes. But, past that, he made several really nice plays around the basket. I thought that Booker had another good outing.

The kids were on their toes and enthusiastic throughout. They look ready to play.

Interesting that Mankin gets a lot of time in practice but never plays. I can see why you would like to ask about it, but understand totally why you think it's best not to do it.

I'm curious about what the coaches were saying in practicing the lob? Players who do a good job of executing that play, usually lob the ball at a target on the backboard. From there, it's up to the player at the other end to time his jump to catch the ball and lay it in or dunk it. Our failed attempts the past couple of games have all been way too high or they were wide of the target area. Can you describe the drill Coach was running to improve the technique our kids are using?

It seems to me that Bennett and Booker continue to get better with every practice and game they play. I still believe that both players will be dependable back ups off of the bench before the season is over. Booker is not far from that right now. Is that an accurate statement?

Do any of the beat writers or media ever make practice? Seems like your question would be a good one for them to ask

I bet Gary knows way more about OU basketball than anyone in the media outside of the guys that call the games and he might know more than some or all of them. The media is a freaking joke.

Ada, the coaches huddle them up to give the instructions. Even in the small confines of the practice gym it is rare when I can hear what they are saying. So, I can not tell what exactly what he was wanting them to do.

I too think Bennett and Booker continue to improve. Bennett looked to be further along back in the summer and on the European trip. He regressed, but, is rebounding from that. Some freshmen come in more ready to play than others. Booker needs some seasoning. Personally, I prefer a little less mustard on my hot dogs. But, Booker probably has a nice future for us. I think that they will both get there. I just wish that they would both hurry up.

They ran the drill sort of like a layup drill. Everyone participated and they formed two lines. One line for the passer, one for the cutter. After they either passed or cut, they went to the back of the other line.

Coach Crutchfield was running the drill. He kept them at it until it started to look smooth.

It is very seldom that any of the local media come in. Trammel came by one day and stayed a long while. Dean Blevins set through almost a whole practice once. Every once in a great while Clay Horning will wander over from the Women's gym. Even the beat writer from the student news paper seems to have forgotten where they keep the practice gym. I don't know the beat writer from the Oklahoman this year. He/she may be coming around. I don't know.

Mike Houk is there almost all the time. The local media has just gotten lazy. When they want something, they call Mike and he feeds it to them.

The local media only cares about the Thunder. It is a shame how little the program is covered. Although I think the media is used to the way Stoops and Gundy treat them they don't know Lon is so accomodating.

+1. I agree but with the quality of local media it may be better they don't show up.

Gary, could you give a quick overview of who Austin Mankin is? Thanks.

guess it was a good game to go to since he was 5 assists away from a quintuple-double. I know its not realistic to do that in college but wouldn't it be nice if he came in and put up like 12-10-5 blocks? Not a sermon, just a thought

Thanks for the report! It sounds like Mankin is just getting some development time in practice. He is 6'7", and we are very thin in front court depth. Conference play begins soon and we may need him......
