Problem with College Basketball

What was the rule before one and done? I thought the change was kids had to go to college for at least one year and prior to that they didn't. How does that hurt college basketball?

Because before those players would just go straight to the pros and have no effect on the college game. Now they come for one year, and teams never stay together.
