Pundits chime in on LSU fans

LSU's Joe Alleva: 'Embarrassing' to hear students' vulgar taunts at Oklahoma game; national pundits weigh in

LSU students hurled obscenities, ice and objects during and immediately after the Tigers’ 77-75 loss in men’s basketball Saturday against No. 1-ranked Oklahoma.

Obscene chants directed at Oklahoma star shooting guard Buddy Hield rose from the packed student section on two or three occasions during the game. After the game, students booed and threw ice and towels as the Sooners left the court on a corner of the court at the end where the student section is located.

The actions drew denouncements from national media as well as LSU athletic director Joe Alleva.

“I am very disappointed with the language used by our students,” Alleva said Monday. “They should act with class and respect our opponents. Their language is embarrassing and motivates our opponent.”

A request for comment Monday morning from LSU President F. King Alexander did not immediately draw a response.

According to LSU police, there were no arrests or charges filed associated with behavior at Saturday's game.

"Generally, if a student is ejected from a game, they are referred to Student Advocacy & Accountability, and they would go through the accountability process outlined in the student code of conduct," said Ernie Ballard III, LSU media relations director.

The obscene chants directed at Hield, a national player of the year candidate who led all scorers Saturday with 32 points, were audible on ESPN’s telecast of the game.

Dari Nowkhah, lead anchor at SEC Network and ESPN Radio host, tweeted that the students’ behavior was “shameful” and “pathetic.”
The Sporting News offered some advice for the offending fans: Don’t give a potential National Player of the Year any additional motivation to beat your team. It’s website posted this video of LSU students’ “not so nice chant to Buddy Hield”:
Fans may have done well to take Sporting News’ advice. Hield burned up the nets in the second half hitting 7-of-10 3-point attempts to lead the Sooners back from a 14-point deficit.

At least one LSU student who attended the game objected to student section behavior he says "is getting completely out of hand," but in his opinion is avoidable with proper attention and effort from LSU staff.

In a letter published in the LSU student newspaper, the Daily Reveille, graduate student Andrew Abad urges Alleva to take whatever steps required to address offensive behavior.

"Not doing so continues to damage the reputation of our students, our athletic program, the university, and most importantly, the LSU brand," Abad writes.

Re: Pundits chime in on LSU fans

I would be curious if Buddy even heard what they were saying. He looked pretty zoned-in during his FT attempts. Has anyone in the media asked him about it post game?

I haven't heard or read anything to suggest that the SEC got involved in what went on last Saturday. I'm also of the opinion the officiating crew could have called an unsportsmanslike technical on the crowd if they had been bold enough to take their authority that far.

What kind of example did the chant and LSU students showering OU players with obstacles thrown from the stands set for youngsters in attendance at that game? Don't those kids count for something?

The silence of LSU's president may tell us all we need to know about any action the school plans to take. The AD came out with a statement when the behavior of some of their students received national press coverage. My guess is nothing will be done. They just want it to go away.

Honestly, I don't want the refs to go that far towards a student section. I didn't like the chant one bit, and it showed what LSU fans really are, but If the refs start throwing around Techs for chants they don't like where is the line? Even if they get punished after the fact, game results wont change if those 2 free throws and extra possession are the difference in a game.

I'm not for officials calling a technical on the crowd myself. I just threw that out to point to the things that could have been done, before I arrived at an eventual conclusion that nothing will be done in the end.

What bothers me more than anything is that impressionable children at the game might have come away believing what they saw was perfectly acceptable behavior. Assuming their parents' didn't approve, hopefully they will use it as a teaching moment.

I agree with that, people do need to be more aware in public settings that kids are around

Did anyone else hear those idiots chanting "SEC, SEC" when LSU went up by double digits?

A technical for chanting---no. A technical for throwing things on the floor or hurling things at a player: absolutely! Don't they already do that? It may be time to have the game contracts demand that any debris hurled at a player be accompanied by an arrest for assault or attempted assault. It isn't a image problem. It is a criminal act.

Yeah, I agree. As a referee I didn't concern myself with what was being said in the stands. My job was to control the game, but not the crowd. Most of the time, I had the crowd tuned out. Even if I heard something, I had no idea who said it. I doubt Buddy even heard the F U chants ..... or let it bother him. I bet his mother heard them.......

Now if it became a danger to the players because of things getting thrown, that's another story. That's when you clear the floor. The bottle that almost hit Ryan came after the game was over I think. The referees were probably already in their locker room.

LSU fans can get extremely ugly. Their administration should be responsible... they know the atmosphere that is there.
OU should take legal action against LSU.

Sorry it was bad but taking legal action for everything has what's ruined this country.
