Not sure if Lon makes recruiting promises of starting or not to players. But for topic of conversation, does a coach that promises starting job to a good player to get him to commit have any moral or ethical responsibility to not recruit over him ( go for the 5 star in the same position).

Just looking at OU team. Hornbeak left for starting position or playing time and I see talented players coming into the system and made me start to wonder how that works.

The line to players is you will get a chance to start right away, and that's the absolute truth. But to address the topic, everyone gets recruited over because you can't predict the future. I'm sure OSu coaches thought Stevie Clark would be a 3 year starter, but they did recruit over him.

I don't think Lon promised Jelon a starting spot, but I think Jelon figured he'd win it and start for 4 years.

I don't see Lon making those types of promises. Some coaches do, I'm sure, but Lon seems a little more straight up than that. Work hard, and you can start if you deserve it.

I also don't think the coaches that are making promises like that are making them to kids that would easily be recruited over. You don't tell Woodard or Cousins they are guaranteed to start, but you might tell somebody like Blake or Willie Warren that.

Kids that believe they will be assured a starting spot are naive. I don't care if a coach tells them that or not. They have participated in athletics at a high level. They know everyone doesn't start and they should know that college is going to be even more competitive.

With that said, I hope OU coaches never mislead kids. Just tell them the truth. They are smart enough to realize the coaches making promises are not being honest. If they are not smarter enough to figure that you, you really have to wonder if they will maintain their academic eligibility.

Coaches like Kruger and Stoops don't make promises to start, but do let kids know that they will be able to compete for a starting position.

I college basketball, not at the DI level but the small college level, and I have never once promised a guy a starting position coming in to the program. I have told them they will have an opportunity to earn playing time right away, but how hard you work will determine how much time you get.

Calvin Newell wanted the promise of a starting spot to stay at OU. Lon didn't give in to his demands, and the rest is history.

I'm glad we have a coach who thinks players should earn the right to start.

Uh oh, here comes Coach. :)

I agree, however.

lol. He'd be our best scorer right now hands down. Make fun of me all you want!

He'd start for anyone in the country. minus maybe a KU or UK with a super class!

I spoke with one of Newell's former coaches right after he transferred and he told me that he told Newell to stay at OU.....said that was his best option and that he could earn that time. But he chose to transfer anyway.
