My take on the scrimmage thread and gary vs wt debate:

1) Don't know if I agree that the red would get regularly beat by the white, but Gary is obviously correct that the starting white team is a far better defensive team. All 3 freshman are better defensively than pledger, and neal, mbuye and arent are better defensively than fitz. Mbuye is way better defensively than osby. However, as all round players, pledger, fitz, osby, grooms and cam have their pluses.

2) Gary can have sort of an irritating way of saying things, but mostly, I think he is seeing things consistent with how i see things.

Grooms is a dandy point that can't shoot. I agree. However, he is every bit as quick as the 3 freshman, so your comment that they blew by him at will doesn't prove that to me, I think it was other issues.

osby is stronger. He noticeably is.

cam is stronger and has improved his shot mechanics. He has.

pledger can shoot but couldn't defend my 81 year old dad, is correct.

the 3 freshman are good and one or both should start ahead of grooms and pledger. I think this could happen, but don't expect it to happen. I think grooms starts at point, but guys, don't be suprised if Cousins takes his job. I'd still take grooms at the moment, but cousins is ultimately going to be a way better player.

Pledger, i just don't know. He is our best offensive player and our worst defensive player. So, you tell me what Lon is going to do. Heild still plays like a freshman, but is clearly a better athlete. Heild will play hard and defend, and steven better ratchet up the intensity, or who knows. Hard to believe we won't start and play our leading scorer from last year, but Gary could be right on this one. And yes, I know, it would kill some of you for him to be right.

Mbuye is our best player but doesn't look like a one and done. I agree.

Now my take on the kids and scrimmage.

1) Neal is our 4th best interior player and much much better inside than out. Just loved him inside. He is a fish out of water outside.

2) Capel was an idiot not to recruit Spangler. I had no idea he was and is that good. He is a freaking bull, and a high d-1 quality power forward. Range probably only out to about 10 feet, but inside is a winning player.

3) Mbuye is a winning player and will make us a lot better just by himself. non stop motor, tons of skill, seems very heady, and just needs to start making some of his shots.

4) 3 freshman; Love them and if they are good kids, aren't head cases, and will work, they are all going to be good. Heild looks like a freshman, Cousins and Hornbeak really don't. You could go play and play well with cousins and hornbeak right now. Just love them. In fact, how in the hell did we get them. They look way better than kids we should have been able to sign. Kudos to Lon and the assistants. Way to early to tell, but if I had to pick one to really become a superstar, I would pick cousins and not heild. Like them both, but just think I see something really special in cousins.

5) Arent is improved and can give us some minutes but not sure how much

6) bennett isn't ready but I see a lot of talent, and I would redshirt him. I don't like redshirting kids that aren't really going to be good, but i see a high ceiling with bennet. A year with yo yo and the kid could be for real.

7) and finally, I see Grooms, Cam, osby, Mbuye and bird starting initially. But, don't be suprised if cousins and heild push for starting position by conference. And, don't be suprised if fitz pushes for starting minutes, with mbuye moving to the 3. This lineup was tried by lon yesterday. (i think grooms and cam or bird worked with the 3 bigs)

The freshman are great kids and all three are gym rats. Kruger couldn't be more happy with them. Steven has a hard time remembering a play after a timeout.
They brought Bennettin for his potential. Redshirting has always been a strong possibility. The coaches have used this in the past with success(Joel Anthony is the best example).

Despite the fact that Pledger is a defensive liability, he is a plus player because he shoots it like very few can. If we can surround him and Osby with a stronger defensive team, we will be much improved.

This exactly...

Pnkranger for 3!

Thanks for the honest writeup Cowboysooner. It's ok to tell the truth about the players, it's what a message board is for.

If you are saying that I said the freshman were blowing by Grooms at will, I certainly don't think that. I would like to think that I was referring to some other player. But, if I did say that or left the impression that was what I thought, that was a misstatement and I would be happy to correct it.

Grooms is everybit as quick as the freshmen guards. Sometimes he gets by them and others they get to him. It isn't any easy task for any of them.

Good report CowboySooner. Thanks for sharing.......
