Report: Big 12 staying together?

You're right though, it's all about Texas. Their fans must be laughing up a storm at the rest of us waiting on them to make a decision.

And this is probably why A&M is trying to get away from them and join the SEC. I kind of wish OU would do something similar.

I don't disagree with you either man. To me, all this is a sad day in college athletics because it's sending a clear message it's not about the student athlete's and fans at all. It's not about traditions and school spirit.
It's just about money.

You're absolutely right. My concern with going forward in the Big 12 (even with A&M staying in) is this: what if the Big 10 does decide to go to 16 teams? What if the SEC follows suit? How much confidence do we have that whenever that happens, Missouri won't yet again be falling all over themselves for a Big 10 invite? How much confidence do we have that A&M won't again be flirting with the SEC? I just don't want to be in a "lame duck" league. If the Big 12 does end up surviving we need to add 2 schools, pronto.

If the Big 12 (10) stays intact it's very likely these other conferences don't make super conferences which they don't need to. Pac-10 would probably add Utah and go to 12. The Big 10 is already at 12...I don't see them finding 4 schools of relevance. Same with SEC.
Sorry if I seem abrasive....I'm just passionate about the Big 12 and love how it is!

On the contrary, I would love for OU to get the same benefits of Texas. I would love for The Sooner Sports Network have it's own entity and maybe eventually be it's own cable network.

Are Beebe's estimates accurate for the long term? Can a Big XII Conference with 10 teams pay it's members as much as the Big XII, SEC or PAC10? If the answer is no, keeping the Big XII intact is simply delaying the inevitable.

If the Big XII does stay together, KU, ISU, KSU & Missouri need to figure out how to make themselves more attractive to other conferences because the time when other conferences come calling will probably come again.

I understand where you're coming from. My concern would be Notre Dame. Whereas once Notre Dame was the "linchpin" that could hold everything together, then can now become the thing that blows everything up again. If the Big 10 is dead set on adding Notre Dame they will absolutely go to 16 teams because they believe that doing so will force Notre Dame to join as the 16th team. That would obviously set off an arms race that would result in the SEC going to 16 teams and the Pac 10 possibily doing so as well. If that happened we would be in exactly the same boat all over again.

If I'm OU, Texas or any of the schools really I'd rather be in the SEC and by all reports the SEC is very interested in OU and Texas. That would be an unbelievable football and basketball conference. Much better than the Pac-16. I wonder how serious the talks with the SEC have been....I hope everyone isn't rushing into all these decisions.

The Big 12 is history if 9 teams are left. The Big 12 isn't in tact without Colorado and Nebraska leaving. Texas A&M is about to leave. And I bet OU leaves real soon too.

Why have you made this point three times almost verbatim without mentioning that a large part of the article was devoted to talking about the possibility of a combined MWC/Big 12?

I'm not against discussing the possibility of this combination. There are some positives to a deal like that. Not sure yet whether it's the best idea, but if someone loves the idea of playing Oregon and USC so much you ignore any other alternatives I can't help ya.

Many apologies. I moved on to another article and forgot. Also sounds like the merger an outsideoption at best. Sorry again, I just got speculation overdose and got confused on which of my rumor-filled article were which!

A&M isn't staying. I've gone through their boards and they are all saying A&M is going to the SEC. So Texas isn't staying with the Big 9.

This basically happened when the Big 12 formed. Texas shifted the blame of the SWC falling to Arkansas leaving even though they did what was best for them at that time. They don't like how Mizzou and Nebraska basically blamed Texas for the downfall of the conference. So what they want to do is say it was really all A&M. The move to the PAC 10 will happen it's basically a done deal.

Good. I really would love to see KU go to the Pac-10 with OU (and whoever else), just to bring the basketball goodness along (and have someone traditional there to hate on ). Any love I have for the Big 12 dies when I hear it's just UT's *****. I loved the Big 8, that was a good conference. It's gone. The Big Texas conference is just too much Texas and feels like OU would be handing over their testicles just to hang with UT.

Man, I really hope we dont do the pac-10 deal....looking at it from a fans perspective I just dont see how moving there gets me excited...unless we can play usc or ucla every year then I dont see to much excitement there

But if we got in the SEC boy that would be something to watch...assuming we could keep osu as our non conference game, and if texas doesnt go we would need to keep them also as a non conference game

It would be very exciting to see us play these games:
texas
osu
lsu
florida
alabama

wow....I actually hope we go to the SEC

And with Stoops we would lose all of those games except for OSU.

I wouldn't mind the SEC over the 10 team Big 12. That would be a lot better than this. A 10 team Big 12 has no chance.

I think the OU leadership needs to make their number one concern what is good for OU in the long-term. Not what's good for the conference, what's good for tradition, what's good for "sports fans,"--because while all those things are important and noteworthy, it is not the main charge of the University.

And it's not being selfish--all other schools in the conference are making those same calculations and determinations, OU needs to do the same. I don't know if it was boksooner or Seniorsooner who said it, but I think it is true that from a long-term monetary, academic, stability point of view a move to another conference is the only pragmatic decision at this time, and right now we have a strong possibility for the PAC. At this point, I don't think finding a Big 12 solution for the here and now and "creating stability" in the near term is enough--the cracks have already started to show and OU needs to be thinking long term--going through this drama again in the next 3-5 years will not be doing us any good and our bargaining position will undoubtedly be weaker if options at that time have dried up.

OU needs to be proactive; not waiting for what Texas is gonna do. Because at the end of the day, Texas does NOT have the conference's interests, A&M's interests, or Oklahoma's best interests at heart. Texas is thinking about Texas. And Oklahoma needs to think about Oklahoma.
