Joe C. was hired in April, 1998. He hired Stoops, CJ Kindler, Lon Kruger and Lincoln Riley. I think Mark Williams was already the gymnastics coach when he arrived. Patty Gasso and Sherri Coale were already here when he arrived. Wrestling has been problematic as has baseball. Capel is the worst hire, imo.

Thanks; that's about what I thought. Stoops and Kindler are really the only ones to point to (Bob brought Lincoln to OU, and when Bob retired, hiring Lincoln was a no-brainer; I wish there were so obvious a choice in this instance).

I think Kruger was a great hire, but the Capel misfire was what made it a necessity.

So for all his achievements, his record for finding the right coach is spotty. Let's hope this hire is a home run.

Capel had been the least successful coach at VCU in years. He was a terrible hire. Joe has made great hires but several poor ones in minor sports. Hopefully this will be a great hire.

Joe C hiring Capel felt as if one of the few times that instead of finding the best fit for Oklahoma he went after a candidate that just checked the boxes of what the ideal candidate should be. Pretty much how Texas fills every coaching void.

There's a reason there's been so few BBall head coaches in OU's history.

Decent chance Blake doesn't come here to play for Sampson. Blake has publically supported Capel numerous times. Attempting to take Blake from Capel is like taking Buddy from Lon. Pure nonsense.

This makes me think Joe C already has reached out to who he wants and their agent, and details are being finalized. This also means we can take out anyone still coaching in the tournament like Moser or Mills.

I'm assuming...which I know isn't "great"....but it just seems like maybe Joe either had some knowledge this MIGHT happen this yr or maybe next...that he already had/has someone in mind.

as of tonight it seems to make the most sense, young enough (44), Knows the Big 12, Texas recruiting connections, been a Division 1 coach for 5 seasons and has not had a below .500 season, likely could of had North Texas in back to back NCAA tourneys if 2020 had not been cancelled, and a NCAA tourney win.

Capel wasn’t that bad a hire. We went to the 2nd round and elite 8 with him.

Even if u think capel is some awful hire that’s still like complaining about a pimple on christy Brinkley.

Not debating Joe Castiglione’s legacy. His work speaks for itself.

That said, Jeff Capel is an absolute garbage basketball coach. He lucked into Blake Griffin at OU and had two good seasons. After Blake left, we went into the tank. He’s continued to suck at Pittsburgh. In his last five seasons as a head coach, Capel has had losing records. He’s literally a loser.

I'd trade Blake and Taylor for the guys that Kelvin WAS going to bring any day of the week. We were about to be absolutely loaded. And he was in on some key guys the following season as well.

Agree 100%. The biggest “what if” in OU basketball I can remember.

fwiw....i have some mixed feelings about Joe C which are pretty secondary and mostly come from my dad who is a donor.....but Joe deserves a lot of credit for Hybl the golf coach as long as we are evaluating hires. Sooner golf went from "pretty good, most of the time" to elite. national championship, 3 consecutive trips to the match play round of the NCAA tournament and currently ranked #1. given that blue bloods OSU and Texas are in the same conference, really impressive.
