Rest Easy, Fellow Sooners

How is being an assistant at a g5 commuter school like Houston making $150k better than making $1mm+ at a top 25 program?

No one is calling your Kellen or Quannas because they aren’t qualified for the OU head coaching job. Houston would be middle of the pack in the big 12 at best.

Would North Texas be better? And more to the point would OU be "middle of the pack in the big 12 at best."

I’m not following. Ou is middle of the pack in the big12 right now. There are no off nights in the big12. It’s going to take more than just a great head coaching hire to challenge KU and Baylor at the top rn. Those programs have great coaching, bagmen, and fan support.

If you are trying to compare Mccasland’s resume to any assistant on Houston’s staff, there is no comparison. Mccasland has been a successful head coach at multiple stops.

Simple-dimple. Did you know Bryson DeChambeau would become a golfing stud with his unconventional swing which went against the purist school of thinking? Did you realize Amazon.Com would catapult Jeff Bezos to the wealthiest in the world? Did you know Baker Mayfield would rise from walk-on status to Heisman winner? Did you realize how the virus would play out as it has? I'm not picking on you specifically, but more like the collective who believes they know before they know when in reality they do not know. Life is a crapshoot at best and it would be comforting if people would just realize the obvious. Opportunities formulate reality and a lack thereof formulates nothing. Finally, here's to us getting a great coach.

Not sure what any of that has to do with ou hiring a qualified head coach? None of those examples require someone else taking a huge risk in buying into them like Joe C would be making in hiring a head coach with no head coaching resume to speak of. I like to think I could be the company ceo but also understand that I haven’t done enough yet to warrant such a promotion.

Btw, Bryson’s short game is why he is great. Lots of long drive guys can’t even break par.

That's all good, but you don't know until you know and this applies to all. Joe C is not selecting from a bevy of guarantees for he is selecting from a hat where the bunny might draw oohs and ahhs or "I need a rabbit's foot pronto."

Coach's comment on Kellen being contacted proves some of my point.

A phone call to or from Joe C?

Might have been placed by the ADA Zac Selmon. They are good friends from growing up in Norman together. Interested to know how much he will influence this hire as he has a strong basketball background.

Why won't you get it through your head that Kellen is the HC in waiting at UH? It was part of Kelvin signing an extension at UH a couple of years ago. The Houston community LOVES the Sampson family. Kellen is working for his father. At a program with reasonable expectations. At a University an hours drives from TONS of HS talent. He gets to work with his mother and sister everyday. He gets to work with his dad every day. He gets to work with Q and Hollis, which I assume he sees as a positive. UH has been pouring money into their program, and Kelvin, and thus Kellen, have a unique relationship with Fertitta, the donor and owner of the Rockets. Did I mention he gets to work with his father every day?

UH would have been top 2 in the Big 12 this year. That comment just shows how out of touch you are.

Nope, you one upped that by saying no way he gets a call. You calling Coach a liar, or do you at least have the sack to admit you were DEAD wrong on this one?

Good grief.

Coach said he received a call. Where did he say he was offered the job? I’m guessing he got a call from his friend Zac Selmon, not Joe C. Who knows what they talked about? If Kellen was offered the job he would be on the next flight out. That’s a fact.

I’ll say Houston would be top 4 in conference this year even though they should have lost to 10 seed buttgers. They would be middle of the pack over a 5-10 year period, though. Ou would win the conference they play in just about every year. It would be a walk in the park compared to the big12.

Coach mentioned a call was made, and he probably regrets sharing this info based on how people are reacting to what he said, but there was no mention of a job offer for starters. Secondly, the call that was made was not to ask "how's the weather" or do do you see it otherwise. If a call was made it's obvious as to the context, but not obvious how engaged it was.

... or whether the call was made from Norman or Houston. If this were my dream job and it came open, I might reach out to OU to see if there was any interest.

You need to calm down a little. The chatter on this board about Kellen is likely the result of more than one recruiting web site “expert” who has him on their prospects list.

I liked Kellen when he was a student at OU making trick shot videos. There was talk back then he would be a good coach someday. If he was being mentioned as a potential assistant here, I would be totally on board with the idea. But, in my non-expert opinion he is not ready to be the head coach at a P5 school like Oklahoma.

He’s in a good place as Kelvin’s heir apparent and that’s where he needs to stay.

I liked and supported Kelvin until the day he left. I've done the same with each coach we had before and after him. I believe at least a couple of his family members are still posting here, as each post season turns into a KS comparison in most every thread..... lol

Other than mccasland, do we know who the other realistic targets are going to be? I would assume Hartman gets an interview. Other than that?

We should all email Joe C everyday telling him not to hire turgeon.

Also, can we start a go fund me for a new basketball arena? If we pool our money, maybe we can short GameStop stock and make a $100 million for the build. Let’s do it!

If I'm not mistaken, Turgeon did have a legit shot when either Capel or Kruger was hired. He didn't want the job because when he played at Kansas, there was very little difference between the programs (hence strong rivalry).

After seeing some posts from Maryland fans, they are BEGGING their alum Joe C to hire him. Turgeon does just enough to keep his job there, but you can't blame Maryland fans for wanting him gone. He has not come close to the height of the Gary Williams era.

Bump for Joe C nailing another hire!
