Roster Next Year

Obviously the new coach will need to reconstruct the roster in the offseason. I'm curious who you guys think will stay. Obviously, there are so many factors at play, but I would rather speculate about next year than think about the debacle of this season.

I think Miles and Forsythe are the two guys the new coach needs to re recruit first. I think there's a chance they both stay with the right amount of $$.

Next on the list is Atak. He may stay simply because he's redshirted and where the heck would he go?

I hope Cole sticks around. I think he could be a player someday. I think Moser has misused him this year. But I could see him dropping a level kinda like Cooper did.

I think Northweather should be processed out. He should go back to Missouri and play for MO State or Southeast MO State.

I think the two inured guys are probably out no matter what.

I'm not real high on Cole. I think his injuries robbed him of more than PM has.

Northweather is very mid....but not a horrible spot backup...just not a major minutes guy.

I think both injured guys could stay...at least I hope they do.

To be fair, Luke has played tremendous in a couple games and we would have not won a couple of those without him

hoping northweather moves on....and we're able to get someone from the portal that can come in and start at center.
with wague and rogers as backups.
i know....probably a pipe dream.

This year's team is only 15 points from being 25-7 and a top 4 seed. I would like to see us keep everyone that can come back and replace Fears and Moore (I presume Fears will be in the NBA) with a couple three elite portal guys ( a center that can rebound, a point guard and maybe a good sized wing). Not sure how much we would have to increase our NIL budget to accomplish this but maybe doable. I don't think you have to be a 10-12 million a year roster to win. We nearly did it this year with a fourth of that amount.

The concern I have is that Moser's 5 out offense doesn't really keep a big around the basket where a good rebounder could be dominate, even if he otherwise could and would. When I see a big catch a ball in the paint and dribble around until it is taken from him I worry we aren't coaching it correctly. Moser seems to like the pick and pop big. Northweather does that OK. I want a rebounder and rim protector at center. But, Moser didn't use Wague much this year until Sam went out. So, who knows.

But, we came damn close to putting this thing together this year and, still might make a run in the Tournament, on a shoe-string budget. So, whether Porter or someone else is coach, it will be interesting to see what they can do with the 2-3 million in donations added to the rev share 3-4 million for NIL. If used correctly, that might be enough to be about as competitive as we have ever been. This year, if you put Amari Williams or an equivalent player on this team, and then use them correctly, I think we win 24-25 games. I may be wrong, but the Jones kid, if he is as good as I think, he might have been the difference this year in 4-5 games even without a really good big.

If Joe wants to keep Porter, I am fine with that. If he moves on, I am fine with that. But, with our financial commitment for basketball being what it is and has always been, I worry about whether we can (or will) commit to the type of NIL that would bring in a quality coach.

I lost rational thought and common sense for a day or two related to whether Porter should be retained, but I think on reflection Porter has done a good job this year considering everything. And, the story might not be over yet.

You really need to adjust your expectations. Our roster will be completely different next year, and it sure as hell better be, seeing as how we finished in 14th place.

Excerpt from an article about Jones, his injury and why he didn't play...also seems to confirm what Boulder and Coach said about him being healthy enough to play for some/most of SEC play.

"...Jones was cleared to return to practice in January, early in Oklahoma's first SEC season, but had already discussed with Moser the best way to approach the rest of the year. Jones, who came to Oklahoma with just one year of eligibility remaining, had to decide whether to use a medical redshirt to preserve a final season of college basketball or try to reintegrate into an already-established Sooners rotation more than halfway through the season.

"It was just coming to an understanding of what I wanted from my last season to be and how he wanted to go about things," Jones said. "Once we had a conversation, sat down, just open and honest with each other, we were able to come to a good understanding with each other and find good understanding."

Since college basketball doesn't have a redshirt rule akin to the one in college football, where players can appear in a set number of games while still maintaining their redshirt if they don't cross that threshold, even if Jones appeared in one game this season he would have burned his final season of eligibility. Ultimately, he and Moser agreed that it made sense for him to redshirt this season and fully heal to preserve his eligibility for a potential return in 2025-26..."

Don’t blame him. He has no allegiance to OU. He was brought in as a one year free agent. He wanted to save his last year to play a full year. It’s whatever at this point. He’ll probably transfer to no name U

Did Jones/Nwanko travel with the team for the Tournament?

All that is fair enough--except when you consider the money. If it was more important to him to have his final year line up just so, then when he made the decision not to play, even though he was healthy enough to, he should have resolved to return every red cent he was paid.

It's been said before, but in many ways it's true: College athletes have it better than the pros when it comes to being able to freely game the system to their benefit.

I don’t think he was making that much. Maybe not enough to really mess with it. He wasn’t exactly a sought after transfer guy.

It's all relative. I'll bet it was more than many fans of OU basketball make in a year.
And this is at the root of so many people’s complaints. Better get used to it because on the open market, they are more valuable than we are. People don’t pay money to watch me do my job, and networks don’t spend billions to broadcast it.

Well imo, if Jones stabs us in the back next year and leaves, or pumps us for a raise in $$, then pm played himself. If he transfers, then pm should have just dismissed him from the team or something, reduce his pay at min

If he comes back next year at same rate, then I think pm did i guess a good job of handling the situation and he should market his player-friendliness to future recruits

I am with you, Hoopsaustin, I think Dayton can be better than Pedulla. To be seen for sure, but I think he has more upside than Pedulla. Big fan of Dayton. His brother - Denton, is just like him. I hope OU tries to get him as well.

I'm good with everyone coming back that can come back, but I would trust the staff to know a lot more about the kids they see every day than I would. If they think a kid is not going to ever make it and they could do better, so be it. I wish the NIL stuff was public, so we could know something about what we all argue about. You hear all kinds of numbers, you just don't know what is real. For example, I saw on line the other day supposedly Oweh got $1.5 million to go to Kentucky. If that true? What did we offer Oweh to stay? Would be nice to know, so we would know how much to put on Porter on failing to retain Oweh. BTW, he has looked incredible this year. After he and Los left, I thought, and probably said on here, I would have preferred to keep Los over Oweh, give the option to keep one. Think I may have been wrong on that assessment. Oweh has just continued to improve. Particularly in his shooting, which is a skill kids rarely ever get substantially improved in. But, Los has been good this year to.
