I read this board a lot, but haven't posted. But knowing there are some coaches, refs, and generally knowledgeable people here, I have a question:

In light of the end of the Thunder/Spurs game 2, what is the official rule? I always thought if the defender touched the ball, it was a technical on the defender. In fact, isn't that kind of a cheap way to draw a T? Hold the ball out and hope he instinctively slaps at it?

But the analysts and even the ref after the game said it should be an offensive foul. I know the game is over, and the good guys won, but I am curious about the rule.

Correct- defender isnt suppose to cross the line, slapping the ball and crossing the line is delay of game and tech (2nd offense) i think.

Nothing wrong with grabbing a cheap tech vs the opposing team!

If he didnt cross the line and hit Waitors shoulder, then if wouldve been a offensive foul.

here is a good full breakdown with the rules listed

Page 30 of the official NBA rule book:

The throw-in starts when the ball is at the disposal of a player entitled to the throw-in. He shall release the ball inbounds within 5 seconds from the time the throw-in starts. Until the passed ball has crossed the plane of the boundary, no player shall have any part of his person over the boundary line and teammates shall not occupy positions parallel or adjacent to the baseline if an opponent desires one of those positions.

Page 39:

a. A delay-of-game shall be called for:

(4) Touching the ball before the throw-in has been released.

(5) A defender crossing the boundary line prior to the ball being released on a
throw-in.

PENALTY: The first offense is a warning. A technical foul shall be assessed with each
successive offense and charged to the team.

EXCEPTION (5): In the last two minutes of the fourth period and last two minutes of any overtime period, a technical foul will be assessed if the defender crosses or breaks the plane of the boundary line when an offensive player is in a position to inbound and prior to the ball being released on a throw-in.

I don't remember Ginobili touching the ball, but he clearly crossed the boundary line.

Thanks for the info guys. Those clips on the link were very telling. A lot of activity in the last 13 seconds.

crazy crazy end to the game is all i can say.

I think in real time the ref thought ginobli was flopping b/c he does it so often.

Here's what I saw that could have been called, there is probably more.

1. Five second count on Thunder getting ball in bounds.
2. Manu steps on sideline
3. Waiters shoulders Manu
4. Leonard grabs Westbrook's jersey
5. Green fouls Durant on in bounds pass
6. Ibaka fouls Aldridge twice under the basket at the end
7. Fan grabs Adams' arm out of bounds

All in :13. Wow!!

yep except i dont think number 1 was a violation

5-seconds was really really close.

You also can't jump on a sideline inbounds pass, which would have been a violation on Waiters.

What would the penalty be for the fan who grabbed Adams?

probably would be decided by the team/arena

But honestly, looking at it, I think the fan was just trying to brace themselves from falling. I don't think they realized what they wree doing

So, you're saying the officials did a bang up job in the final 13 seconds? :ez-laugh:

I totally understand why the Spurs were upset but they had what they wanted, a live ball turnover into a 3 on 1 break.

Fortunately, Stephen Adams turned into Superman and defended three Spurs players within about 10 seconds.

He was fantastic in that last sequence.

End of game plays are like that all the time. Do you remember Frank Mason crowding our inbound pass during the three overtime game at Kansas? Nine times out of ten the refs will never call fouls on end of game plays. Unless it's clearly egregious.

Ginobili was crowding within the three feet, even stepping on the line. The refs did the Spurs a favor by not calling a foul when Waiters had to push Manu away.

I don't think there's any rule against an out of bound passer jumping on his throw in.

I've always understood it to be the same as holding the ball after picking up your dribble. You can't walk or jump while inbounding the ball except after a made basket when you can "run the baseline". An "up and down" while inbounding should be called a travel.

You can jump, but you just can't move laterally. Here's what the NBA said about the final 2 minutes: http://official.nba.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/4/2016/05/L2M-OKC-SAS-5-2-16.pdf.

(I'm not an OKC nor a Spurs fan, fwiw)
