Well, I haven't watched much of them, just their championship game against Stony Brook (replay is on WatchESPN), but this is what I saw.
They play slow, but they are susceptible to being sped up-- Stony Brook was able to pick up the pace a couple times and built a 7-8 pt lead in second half before they choked it away. I really don't know how SB lost that game. They were up 7 with 2:30 to go. It seemed like they had the game well in hand.
#14 Rowley - The offense runs through him. He is a poor man's Niang that doesn't shoot the 3. The reason I compare him to Niang is that they are similar in height and the way they play around the rim. Niang is a lot thicker. Rowley is very crafty -- uses a loft of pump fakes and really throws his weight around when he attacks the basket. He loves attacking into the lane from the wing just inside the arc. He has a quick first step and gets a head of steam going and bullies the defender. I think a key will be to make him go baseline. When he was forced baseline, he was much less effective. He seems like he is one of those guys that decides he going to shoot no matter what when he attacks. Sometimes, that works out, but whenever his shot is well-contested, instead of passing, he throws up wild shots in hopes of getting a foul called. Whoever guards him really just needs to stay disciplined and not let him bully his way to the rim. We CANNOT bail this guy out with fouls (this is the only part that worries me), which is what happened to SB a lot.
Peters didn't affect the game that much. Had a couple buckets off pick-and-rolls, but that was it. He is pretty slow -- smaller, quicker player were able to get around him pretty easily.
Their other guards didn't impress me a whole not. I'm not really scared of any of them getting hot, but it's a small sample size. They did not shoot well at all from 3.
I will be pretty disappointed if Thomas doesn't have a good game. He should have a field-day down low. Peters is their only guy with some size, and he doesn't move well, plus he din't even play that much.
This is a team we should be able to "out-athlete". I don't think they will be able to keep up with us if we just play smart basketball and contest shots.
