Selection Sunday with reactions

I’d always rather watch OU basketball than not, despite the circumstances. Declining the NIT bid is very telling.

Not really sure what next year looks like from a roster standpoint. I’d say the only direction is up, but I don’t know at this point.

Nowadays I’m not sure. Several other teams punted the NIT this year as well. I think when you couple the disappointment of missing the Tournament w/ the reality of the challenges of keeping a team together (and improving at same time) it makes the desire to get the off season going stronger than the desire to get in more work. Had they accepted the bid, I would have taken it as a sign that they REALLY wanted to keep playing, but I don’t think declining means anything overly significant.

Meaning what? They said all last week that JM and Waldo were a day or two away from being available and that they would be close to full strength by this week, and even said Hugley might be ready. Do you mean they thought those guys had mentally checked out? I can’t see that being the case with Waldo.

I doubt Hugley was gonna be ready. They never said anything on JM's readiness either. And Waldo was hobbling in there when he was playing.

I can't believe they missed the tournament altogether after starting 13-1 and were top 10. Thought that was a little high, but I did think they were a solid top 35 team or so that could finish in the top half of a good conference. Gosh I hate it because it seems like the guys are always playing hard, but it just doesn't seem to be working with Moser so far. Just felt this was the year we had to do something, and we had it in the palm of our hands and blew it.

Yea he said they anticipated being almost full strength with Hugley being the one unknown. Now, I have no clue if any of those guys wanted to play through pain in a consolation tourney. But two of them would have certainly been playing in the NCAA.

No team watch party says it all, I don't ever remember that happening if you have a chance to make it.

This is old news from 4 hours ago, but I'm listening the recording of a Twitter space from a guy called TheArmChairAD. He's an East Coast guy, so he has a bias. But it's interesting to hear someone from outside our bubble. He says OU and a few other schools were screwed over because the NCAA wants to expand the field to 76 and wants to prove a point. He mentioned Seton Hall and St. John's, as well. He thinks the NCAA wanted to screw over some fan bases in order to drum up support to expand the tournament.

Makes sense considering our new commissioner (Greg Sankey) is the biggest proponent to expand the field size

You’re making way too much about this. Tons of teams don’t have public watch parties. Teams don’t find out their fate before we do.

Interesting idea. I will 100% watch less of the tournament if it has more teams. Screw that. Everybody is so gosh Dang greedy

And to follow the conspiracy, any tournament units we would have earned this year would stay with the Big 12. Greg's not losing anything from it.

Crean's ranting as if it's totally the coach's decision. Moser said the players decided they didn't want to the accept the NIT invite. There could be many reasons for that, but I fear the main one may be that too many of them are already mentally and emotionally on their way out of Norman and the idea of staying "checked in" to play in the NIT just didn't appeal. I hope I'm wrong, but as others have stated, I fear we should prepare ourselves for a major exodus.

The NCAA tourney was perfect at 64. Every time they expand, it degrades the tourney and the sport. Greed has ruined college sports.
You could not be more correct if you tried. There was nothing in sports as perfect as the field of 64. Then UNC got beat in Seattle by Weber State (Harold "The Show" Arceneaux) which led to the pod system. Then the WAC blew up and we got the ridiculous field of 65 when the Mountain West formed and secured an automatic bid. The First Four is STUPID. If you insist on 68 then make Dayton a showcase for the 16-seeds. Treat them like royalty and have the eight teams duke it out to get into the field of 64.

Every expansion is stupid. Remember when the NCAA tried to shove the whole "Second/Third Round" nonsense down our throats? Every expansion guarantees I will watch less. I miss the days when those cut throat R-32 matchups were awesome because you knew the two teams who emerged from those bloodlettings would be matching up against each other in just a few short days. Arkansas beats Georgetown in the Myriad in '94 and now it's Tulsa and O-State.......the winner gets the Hogs in Dallas. Good luck!

Infuriating. I miss it so.

I think if there was some grand conspiracy to screw over fanbases to drum up support for expanding the tournament, they wouldn’t have picked OU to screw over. Michigan State would have been a much better choice.

Players are just mercenaries now, and its understandable from their perspective. They don't care about the school, the program, the community, etc. Go to who is offering the better deal, both in terms of money and opportunity. It's a labor market, but it's lacking the negative consequences of one. For example, if I take a new job every year, I eventually become unemployable because future employers will see me as unreliable. That's not the case here, because the player his or herself is inherently a short term commodity, they only have a limited amount of eligibility. All that really matters is the next year. Coaches and programs need to be on board for that.

Back in the day guys like Hollis Price, Eduardo Najera, Kevin Bookout, etc were insanely proud to be at OU. There was never a question in 4-5 years if they were going to leave. They were here because they wanted to be here and were invested in the school, coaches, and program. They poured their guts into the program, their own development, etc. That system is dead and gone.
