Sherri on Carter's future

If Sherri could have do-overs on both the Marist and the ISU games, I would bet money she would coach each game differently.

We are getting away from Carter; but what do you think she would(should) do differently? Not a challenge; curious. Keep it under 5 though; I have adult onset ADD. :)

We may be selling our talent a bit short. After all we played two top 5 teams and now 3 top 11 teams down to the wire. You don't do that without some talent.

I know that we don't have a lot of highly ranked players but how accurate are those ratings? The women's rating systems as they exist are not nearly as extensive and probably not as accurate as the men's basketball and football rating agencies. And we know that even those miss quite a bit.

I coached men in middle school and high school and for two years in the army a long time ago so I am hardly an expert.

I can only express some questions I have.

With four starting guards that can penetrate so well why and at least two of them who a good three point shooters why don't we drive and dish to the three point line more. We do that mostly on the baseline with a pass to the opposite corner but the driver couldn't get a shot from there. Both Marist and Iowa State wore us out with that tactic with probably less athletic players.

I have a hard time figuring out Sherri's substitution logic. Kornet for example has games where she played only 0 and 2 minutes and 5 where she played at least 23.

Wyatt has 3 games where she didn't play and on the other hand 6 where she has played more than 20. She has 7 where she played less than 15 minutes.

I know some of it is determined by fouls and the quality of competition but I really don't know what to expect in player rotation other than KayKay relieving Nicole Griffin.

With the brilliance of set plays out of bounds I have a hard time understanding why we go so stale at times in our half court offense. Certainly some of it is on the players as those dry spells are usually packed with turnovers and poor shot selection.

I'm happy with Sherri as our coach. I think the program will improve in the near future. And you can't guarantee that even Geno would attract the same kind of players to Oklahoma that he gets at Connecticut. Remember, GG got all kinds of talent at Duke and won a lot of games. At Texas which should be a slam dunk in recruiting it wasn't the same and they suffered during her tenure.

Not comparing GG to Geno but I think you get the picture.

Good post. Good questions. I certainly have no answers.

I don't know why Sherri substitutes the way that she does, except for the center switch. But, I think a lot of what Sherri does is long-term in nature. We had a game or two in which Derica played a lot of minutes, sometimes surprising me. But, I think Sherri wants Derica to be able to play and have the confidence to play. I also think she wants to see what Derica will do.

I think Sherri really force-feeding Gioya and Kay Kay. I get the impression that she is extremely high on what they can do. If we are to go far into the tournament this year, we will need both to develop. We need someone like Gioya to be a creator. We have post-up shooters, but not creators. Gioya can make it happen, but she must learn how to do it at this level. If Gioya were a bit more mature, what she did today against Iowa State would have resulted in a twenty point victory. She could go where she wanted, and they really had no answer. She just hasn't learned to complete the play yet.

Kay Kay has size and quickness. But, she really has decision problems. She is really still a freshman, having sat out last year. Although she has been here, she hasn't been on the floor working enough. She has a lot to learn about what she can do. Kornet is beginning to discover herself, but is also learning what she can do.

This is the type of stuff that frustrates us now, but that usually shows up as improved at tournament time. Remember how frustrated we were with Jo early last year?

Let's follow up on your post and address what Sherri is building. We already know that we are losing Aaryn, Morgan, Nicole, and Portia this year. It is interesting who is coming back along with who is coming in.

With Gioya apparently being someone that Sherri loves, we are also looking at having Ortiz at the point. I wonder if we'll experience the typical drop-off of losing Morgan with such a good point coming in? We will also have Derica, E'Ona, Lanesia, Penzo, and Little rotating in that guard position. Hopefully, Maddie will be back with two knees that won't give out. That is a bunch of talent for some time at the guard position. I think we can find a very good three-guard set with five in the rotation.

We also have Kay Kay, Kellogg, and Gibbs back as the power interior. Kornet and Campbell give us two pretty good forwards to go with that group. Then, there is Pierre-Louis, tall and deadly accurate from what I've read.

Our guards should be faster as a group than what we have had. Ortiz, Little, and Derica are known for three-point range. Maddie---I keep hoping she hasn't lost what she had. The forwards should be quicker and have some range. We have seen that Kellogg can hit the three, and she is solid at the line. I think the pieces are here for something that will be pretty solid by the time that Dungee arrives, and I wouldn't be at all surprised if we didn't get a major star to go along with this group. When Penzo shows up, she will have been the point guard for the Puerto Rico team, and she will be 17. If you haven't seen her video, she is a rather impressive 16. It will take more than an ACL to bring this team down.

Gioya will be fine! Trust me. My cousin is still adjusting to the game but I can promise you she will be fine! True freshman who's been thrown in the mix early. Give her some time. Yes she turns the ball over but a lot of her turnovers come from players not catching her passes. Wait until she get aggressive and gets her scorers mentality back like she had in high school.

Thanks for posting. I agree, she's going to be okay. Once her team mates get used to her passes, and continue to be ready, things will fall into place. Majority of freshmen have that learning curve to get over and then it comes to them. It will come quicker for Gioya as she moves through the conference season. She is fun to watch, a little painful at times, but still like what she adds to the team. Her maturity will be a joy to watch the next 3 1/2 years.

I can understand why Sherri is giving Carter a long leash. Even with some of her wild plays she contributes in a lot of ways. Tough defense, tough rebounding, excellent court awareness and quick to the ball wherever it is. I think she has more shooting touch than she has shown so far. She rushes it and I think is not too confident of some of her shots. She is not close to knowing where she can score from and being ready to shoot in rhythm when she gets the ball.

But I like her a lot and see a significant upside. Maddie going down really forced Sherri to try to bring Carter along quickly.

I like Wyatt and Kellogg and also Gibbs as well but they are all different type players than Carter.

I am more puzzled about Kornet. She plays a few minutes as 2 and as many as 30. I would think that an experienced player like her would get more consistent minutes. Also scoring. Range is from 0 to 26 points in her bust out game.

Thanks for all the support for Gioya! I have been watching her play for years so I know what she is capable of. I'm proud of her and what she's done so far for this team. If you watch the games closely watch how many passes her teammates blow and let go out of bounds. If I'm correct she lead the team in assist against ISU.

That's absolutely right, I know of two turnovers that were attributed to her that if the players had gone and met the ball, and made a little more effort,it could have turned into a nice play. I watched Gioya in high school and was glad she chose the Sooners. The best is yet to come.

I love Gioya and see a lot of real upside...she is gonna be a beast. I also think that Kellog and Gibbs are gonna be really good. So I am really high on the recruiting.. I would love some more post of a high caliber but am confident they will come. I think by tournament time, folks are gonna be real worried about playing us...and next year...WOW>

I think the descriptions of the Gioya that are being posted are similar to what we saw with Maddie, and Maddie is five inches taller. This is a type that Sherri is looking for.

I have not seen much of Maddie but I didn't really think she and Gioya are the same type of players. But, I could be wrong.

I think of Gioya and Maddie as creators, the type who make things happen. Both are extremely quick if they decide to drive to the basket. Both are good at getting into the lane where they can shoot or pass. I think we will see that both can also break the zone from outside when they mature. Both can shoot the three.

They both have point guard type skills that enable them to get where they want on the floor. Maddie has an advantage in that she can jump higher than the typical forward. I think Gioya may have a switching advantage. I think that we will find that they will be difficult for defenses to game plan against when they get it together.

We probably have more girls right now who can penetrate than ever before. Some are, Sharane, Morgan, Gioya, Kornet, & Aaryn. Morgan and Sharane seem to be the most proficient right now as they are the best finishers. Aaryn normally looks to penetrate and pull up with a 12-15 ft jump shot. The others need to learn to finish which will make us more difficult to defend.
