Guys, first off I have not seen a lot of the ladies' games this year, live in Memphis. My question is - why does Sherri play five guards and why only six players?

Thanks for any answers.

She won’t/can’t recruit any D1 post or wing players. Tallest player on the team right now is 6’ 1”, Simpson who has been out for three games.

The team had 12 players last year with zero seniors. 2 of them (both post players, both rarely played) transferred. They added 3 freshmen (a PG, a guard, and a forward). So the plan was to go into the season with 13 scholarship players.

3 players opted out, bringing the number down to 10. Right before the season began, senior leader (and obviously a D1 talent) Ana Llanusa had to have season-ending back surgery. Down to 9.

A few games in, a promising tall forward with a knack for scoring the ball, Liz Scott, suffered a season ending injury as well. Down to 8.

Before the spring semester, it was announced that freshman forward Heavenly Greer is now academically ineligible and will not be able to play for the rest of the season. Down to 7 — 6 guards and 1 forward.

The lone forward is Mandy Simpson who has been in and out of the lineup with contact tracing and a “non-COVID related illness,” which left the team with 6 guards for two games.

Madi Williams, Gabby Gregory, and Taylor Robertson are very, very solid pieces who would start anywhere in the conference and probably anywhere in the country. Tatum is a good defender and seems more comfortable playing off the ball offensively and has been playing the best basketball of her career in the last two weeks. Tot will be a good PG by the time she leaves and she’s learning quickly, but she is a freshman point guard thrown into the fire having to work with constantly moving pieces.

Sherri deserves a lot of criticism for the last few years, but this team is dealing with an insane amount of adversity and her recent game plans have been solid, all things considered.

Joe C has let it go to pot. We'll never get it back. Our Womens' BB team will be forever dominated by teh pokes.

I do think this team could beat a OSU team from the 70's or early 80's, so Sherri has built a pretty good 70's-early 80's team..little Sherri's gets it done

Agreed. I think SC is still living in the 2000-2002 era in which she was successful with a 5'10 forward in Whaley, then went to the national championship game with a seven-player deep roster, the tallest of which being 6'2. There was some hope when she brought in talented height like cp3, her sister, and McFarland, heck even Vivi was a great get, but something seemed to have happened after that class graduated. She brought in 6'9" mulkey, who was a Gamble player at best and ended up transferring along with Dungee who would have probably been one of the best players ever at OU, and decided to stop aggressively recruiting talented bigs from that point on {period} I don't know if it was something in her personal life or what else it was but it seems as though the past 5 years or so she's given up. I hate it as a fan and as a supporter of OU women's Athletics in general, to see a one successful and then mediocre program plummet down to a laughable program. It's frustrating as can be that this quality product is allowed to continue, as we don't have any productive looking bigs coming in for next season either, needless to say the future is not looking so bright. I believe that until we get an AD that actually cares enough to do something about it we will continue being a joke, and that kills me. I hate not being able to look forward to wbb games. After last night I've decided to stop watching until at least next season

There is a plus side...............There are only 5 games left in the regular season plus one game in the Big 12 tournament. Then we can put this season to bed. Out of the six games, we might win one of them. Makes me sad......I know the girls are trying....no blame on them.....Just need to fill up the bench.....Coaches need to allow for Covid and injuries, and need girls to come off the bench to fill in when their number is called. Blame this on coach and lack of recruiting.

12-34 record in Big 12 conference the past 3 years. No way in hell can they justify keeping Coale. But she will be back next year.

Her present contract expires June 2024. She will be back for 2021-2222, 2222-2223 and 2023-24.

Thanks for the thorough explanation TheMont. I agree that Sherri deserves a lot of criticism for past years, but this team is playing hard and making the most of their abilities. Sherri does seem to have learned some things and appears to have made some changes.

Next year's incoming class looks promising with four new players coming in and only one senior this year (Simpson). Hopefully the numbers get back up. Every team suffers injuries, but being short-handed like OU always seems to be leaves very little margin of error.

Does anyone know if the opt-outs are returning next year? Or if Simpson is returning as a Super Senior? Not sure if Greer can be counted on to return, but it would be good to have her back as well. It looks to me like we have a chance to be OK-to-pretty good next year. Not great, but better.

Mulkey was a top 20 recruit and a Macdonald’s All American, so you wouldn’t expect a elite big in the 2017 class to look at OU, when it looked like we had our future starting center for the next 4 years. In the 2018 class OU was recruiting Shakira Austin, and got Yo'myris Morris to take an official visit, but couldn’t land either player, in 2019 OU was recruiting Laeticia Amihere and got Kennedy Brown to visit officially, but couldn’t land either player. I don’t think it’s been a lack of effort when it comes to landing an elite big, since Sherri has tried, I think the mistake is not offering a few bigs like 4-5 and hoping to land one.. Take the 2022 class for instance Desoto high school has 3 talented big girls and from what I can find online OU only offered one of them.
