Smart for real, Nash deserves an Oscar.

To me an even better argument is that Smart got 10 points in a bad game for him. His percentage was low but he still had 10 points in one of his worst performances on the season.

Very good point.

He scored 10 points in 27 mintues when he was severely limted by foul trouble. Not a great game, but not horrible.

Additionally, comparing him to Wayman Tisdale is just silly. Wayman might have been the best college basketball player ever and is certainly one of them. Smart is one of the best freshman this year. There is a big difference between those two statements but that does not mean that both players are not really good college basketball players.

Also agreed.

PS - My nehpew lives in Flower Mound and was in 6th grade lat year. One his buddies went to a bunch of the Flower Mound Marcus games, including the state championship. Marcus Smart notice this kid at the games and after the State Championship gave the little kid the game ball. That is a good guy in my book.

This doesn't surprise me.

The one thing that's very consistent about Smart is that practically everyone who encounters him raves about what a great person/leader he is.

Just FWIW on the 85 Kansas game, this from the Oklahoman story on the game.......

"I was on him the whole time today," said the 250-pound Dreiling, "but we'd put a shadow on him all the time, too. And when he got the ball we'd surround him with just about everybody because once he puts it up he puts it in."

"They didn't do anything we haven't seen before," Tubbs said, "except that they do it with a lot bigger people. Basically, they had one person in front of him and one in back, then a lot of help when he got the ball. Once he got the ball they put four on him at least, sometimes even five it looked like."

Also, Choo Kennedy scored 34 points, Tim Mcalister 21 and Anthony Bowie 18 because of the "mug Tisdale" defense.

Marcus Smart is one of the best freshmen I've seen in years in this conference. He'll be a star if he stays in school. Heck, he's already there as far as I'm concerned.

Foul trouble or not, OU was able to do what no other team had accomplished so far this season. Hold Marcus Smart to what most have to admit was no better than an average game, at least for a player like him.

It was difficult to tell who was guarding him at times. Maybe it was by committee. But there is no denying that he was bothered by the defense guards who were every bit of his equal in size, quickness and strength threw at him. I'm sure that will only motivate Marcus to prove himself in the rematch in Stillwater.

Exactly. Almost any player can be stymied if a team devotes enough players to the effort. But that opens the door for other players to shine, and clearly our guys did.

Good find! Thanks for posting. :clap :clap :oldwt356:

The bolded part is what I remember, specifically the fact they were using 2, 3, 4 and even 5 to prevent WT from doing what he normally did. I wish I could remember for sure but I would guess Manning was supposed to be covering Choo but when WT got the ball he was one who rotated over thus Choo having the career game, not to take away from Choo as he was an outstanding player too.

You are partly right B.O.B., Manning was guarding Choo but Manning actually only played about 24 minutes of the game because of foul trouble. He got his 3rd and 4th fouls of the game with 16 minutes to go in the second half, so that coupled with the Tisdale defense allowed Choo to go off.

he is not even the best freshman guard in the conf THIS year ... ..

He's not the best freshman SCORING GUARD in this conf but he is the BEST freshman OVERALL GUARD in this conf. But McClemore is a great player so if you chose him your getting a top 5 nba draft pick...if you choose Smart, your getting a top 5 nba draft pick

McClemore is a top 5 pick ... smart will be a top 7-12 pick ..

Mcclemore is the better player

and yes i have watched both a bunch ..

smart is the best player on an average team

McClemore is the best player on a very good team

McLemore is in his 2nd year of college (frosh in eligibility) because he redshirted last year. Smart is a true frosh.

That's a big difference, IMO. If McLemore were all that last year, he would have played for KU because they needed him, unless he were ineligible which may be the case.

Indeed, he was.

Kansas probably wins it all with McLemore eligible.

I don't care if Smart was the best player on a crappy team...Smart is a solid player...and every coach knows it. He would be starting for KU this year and every team in the country. There is not one team that Smart would not be starting for.

I don't think anybody is disputing his talent. Lottery picks virtually always start in college.

he would not be starting at KU .. over their senior PG .. he would be playing a bunch .. smart is a great frosh ... he is just not the best one in the big 12

KU would find a spot for him. Smart is versatile enough to play off the ball. Self would just bring Releford off the bench.

doubtful ... releford is their best wing defender and a very very good outside shooter ..

and just for comparisn sake ...

McLemore 16.4 ppg 2.1 ast 5.4 boards 1.3 steals 1.8 to on .503 .435 and .877 from the line ..

Smart 14 ppg 4.7 ast 5.5 boards 2.8 steals 3.2 to on .413 .297 .770 from the line

it is not that close who is the better player ..

Marcus Smart is really really good, with that said he isn't starting over Releford or Johnson on a Bill Self KU team.

That's fine. McLemore is a wonderful player but Smart would start at KU. He would find a way to contribute enough to knock someone to the bench or force a change of position. He is just that good.

My all-Big 12 team right now is Jackson (Baylor), McGruder (KState), McLemore (KU), Osby (OU), Withey (KU), and Smart. I know that is 6 so Smart would be my top reserve.
