Softball: 2/9 ESPNU Auburn 1:00

Thanks for the reminder, Syb! Set my DVR to record the game just now.

Auburn has announced they will start Makayla Martin who started game 3 in the WCWS championship series. OU has not announced their starter.

Sooners should start the season better than last year when we opened the season 8-4. We were 6-5 against Power 5 schools coming out of the gates before closing with a 11-1 run against them including 9-1 against the SEC.

Auburn's Martin controlling OU hitters through 6-1/2. Leading the Sooners 3-0 and holding OU to 4 singles. Sooners not making good contact. Auburn cleanup hitter has two HR's. Lowary started and had 11k's. OU has only had two runners in scoring position through 6.

Auburn wins 3-2 after the Sooners score 2 in the 7th when freshmen pinch hitter Taukeiaho hits a single up the middle to drive in 2 runs. Arnold and Clifton strike out to end the game.

Gasso overmanaged this, and the players kept trying to do something with low deliveries. No patience at the plate.

Interested is seeing who starts against BYU at 4 PM and tomorrow against Washington at 3:30 PM. My guess is Parker start against Nebraska the first game tomorrow. But who knows.

Patti started Paige vs BYU and OU is up 5-0 with OU batting in the bottom of the 4th. Patti must have decided to not let Auburn get extra at bats vs Paige thinking of the WCWS.

Overmanaged? Please explain how she did that?

Example: runners on first and second, bottom of the ninth, down three---and you sacrifice? It makes no difference if the two runners get to second and third. You need that third runner to tie. You let Hatfield, who is not good at sacrificing, sacrifice. One of our best would have been the next hitter, Wodach. Needed to put Hatfield on---anyway you can and let Wodach squeeze if you want to bunt. She can. Down three, you don't give up an out to move runs one and two to second and third.

First inning: you set a tone. You send Clifton with Dalton up. The attempt to move Clifton over takes the bat out of Dalton's hand. Then, Caleigh gets thrown out.

Don't bunt through pitches and get down in the count. She kept trying to make it happen, and we really needed to be smart.

Got the second, 7-1 over BYU.

I suspect that we will use a freshman against Nebraska. Come back with Parker against Washington on Saturday.

Guess that's the reason she has 3 national championships. Just how many do you have? Ridiculous to question how she EVER coaches a game. But of course everyone has a right to their opinion and that's mine.

Baseball and softball are long seasons. Managers and coaches make errors. I think a lot of softball and baseball people would question sacrificing in the seventh. It doesn't mean that I think she is anything less than the best.

Lost to Washington 1-0 on a big fly. Both losses a result of giving up HR's. Not a good hitting series for the Sooners. Only Clifton and Pendley hit the ball consistently. Other seven starters went 7-13 (.178).

Pitching was generally good except for the 3 HR's (2 losses) and Lowary having 8 BB's in 12 innings. Cannot consistently win and give up that many walks. Lowary did have 15 K's.

Easy to be disappointed with the hitting to start the season. But as Syb said long season and we will experience several more losses probably as many or more than last season. Also must remember that good pitching generally beats good hitting and all four teams had good pitching the Washington starter beat Auburn 2-1 and OU 1-0 but lost to BYU.

Would have liked to have seen us go 3-1 instead of 2-2. But just as last season these losses will motivate this team to get better and last year every starter hit over .315 for the season (six over .346). Might lose a little with the stick with Hatfield replacing Katy Self (.345). But when Taukeiaho gets totally healthy and can play in the outfield she might replace or alternate with Hatfield.

No question Lowary is going to provide more help in the circle than Parker had last year.
