Some observations

Poor game from Cousins......

I wouldn't call 14 points, 3 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal, and zero turnovers a poor game. I thought Cousins had a better game than Woodard did last night.

As a casual observer, I think Cousins is a better PG. Excellent, creative move by LK

There are times in this tournament that OU looks really, really good. To be honest, I didn't think they could be as good as they've looked. I'm impressed. And, I think they are or can be really good on defense.

I agree with you, MO. I questioned Kruger's decision to start Isaiah at the point and move Jordan to the two guard position. I was supportive, but wondered out loud if he was making a mistake. OU's 10-0 season start and our offense clicking in every game but one, proves he knew what he was doing.

Cousins had a couple of assists last night that brought me out of my seat. They were NBA type passes, for lack of a better description. He has already exceeded my expectations in running the offense, and he appears to be getting better with every outing. If he continues to improve, he's bound to at least get a long, hard look from NBA scouts before the season is over.

Cousins was awful too! You guys look at stats way too much and think that's the bottom line. Cousins decision making was awful. He hunted for shots, he spent too much time playing buddy ball with Buddy, and he has been weak on defense for about a year and a half. There was an easy play where all he had to do was throw it at the rim to Lattin on the break. He over dribbled, drew the defense, to set Buddy up for a three on what should have been a 3 on 1 layup for is.

. I love this team, but there are weakness. These guys shot Hunt for too many jumpers. Walker is going in there just trying to score, Buddy takes bad shots, and Spangler lacks mobility against skilled 4s and at times checks out mentally. We miss Thomas as he stabilized things when the guards got wild. Burford has that potential at the high post if he can get some maturity in his game.

You love this team?

Dude.... It's Buford

They're 10-0 and number 2 in the country dummy. Simmer down.

Obviously some people in this thread don't subscribe to this idea. 10-0 and #2 in the country? Most fans celebrate facts such as these. Others find fault. Strange mentality. Nature of some OU fans. Don't win by 30 and play the entire roster = somethings wrong.
If you don't mind, I'm going to enjoy this team and coaching staff and what they're doing right now. I've seen enough to know this team can win the whole damn thing.

I agree with you that stats don't tell the whole story, but you can't ignore them either. I also disagree with you that Cousins was "awful" in that game. On the positive side, he had 14 points with 6 assists and zero turnovers. As Ada pointed out, a couple of those assists were jaw dropping. Also, he's only had 1 turnover in the tournament. Not bad for a PG.

I think I know the 2 breaks you are talking about. Both happened in the 2nd half where he had the ball in the middle. The first one was a 3 on 2 where he could have lobbed to Lattin or hit Buddy on the right. He chose to keep the ball and missed the layup. It was makeable but contested. You would have lobbed to Lattin, but I thought Buddy was a better option on the right wing. The 2nd break he did pass to Buddy who put up a 3 point shot from the wing and missed. I don't think those 2 decisions merit an "awful" evaluation for the entire game but you may be a tougher grader than I am.

I also disagree with you that Isaiah has been weak on defense for a year and a half. Last night might not have been his strongest game, but I don't rate him as a weak defender. Someone held Hawaii's leading scorer (wing) to 1-6 from the field for 3 points.

You mention Buford's potential in the post and I agree with you there. I think he will continue to improve and is the best option other than Spangler in the high post. However, he played 17 minutes in the post last night without a single rebound. He had a couple of steals but also had a couple of turnovers. I recall late in the game where he got a steal but then threw it away a few seconds later. Sometimes stats speak volumes.

Let's agree to disagree on the player evaluations in this game. I usually highly respect your opinions but it's OK to disagree sometimes.

A lot of negative overreactions from one game...
On the road...
Which we won.

To say that our defense is bad when we came into the game with the number 2 FG defense in the nation is just silly. Nobody played great. It was the second game of a back to back after a 10-hour trip. Playing against a team that didn't have to travel. And is pretty decent. It'll happen.

I think of it as the OU football mentality when undefeated is an achievable goal ingrained around here for generations. I got frustrated during the game but then I take a step back because it's a season long process of ups and downs for every team. If this team continues to be better in January and again even better in February, then it's all good, even if there are loses because undefeated is not the goal.
