OU received two votes in the latest coaches poll.

When was the last time OU was in the poll?

As long as we hold serve at home in the next 2 games, we'll get closer to top 25 when we visit West Virginia.

I don't know about waves, but we're definitely making progress.

I doubt if many here will disagree that this team is getting better with every outing, especially on defense. The defense we're playing now reminds of the Sampson days when getting stops, forcing turnovers and shutting teams down would contribute to a win, even when our shooting went south. LK is an old-school coach with a similar philosophy, when it comes to building programs and establishing a reliable game plan to maximize the talent on hand.

Is that worse for OSU or OU? I think it is pretty funny that a lot of people know so little about OSU they confuse it with OU.

Umm I'm thinking its probably just because they forgot to write "state" after Oklahoma. A lot of these retards don't have a clue what they're doing an dont even deserve to vote

I hate to break it to you but people outside of the Big XII know very little about OSU and often confuse it with OU. It probably speaks more about them than OSU but this is does happen somewhat regularly.

No. College coaches know the difference between OU and OSU. That might be the most absurd comment I've read here. These aren't Joe Schmo on the street.

Retarded? Forgetful? Not likely. Shows those coaches are intelligent enough to recognize the difference in OU and OSU. ;)

My fault. I thought it was the AP voters who did this. Didnt realize it was the coaches

I'm curious... and I'm really not trying to be a jerk about this... where are you seeing the defensive improvement? Because the numbers just don't bear it out.

Right now, OU is 78th in the country and 7th in the Big 12 in adjusted defensive efficiency.

Last year, they finished the season 91st in AdjD efficiency and 8th in the Big 12.

Isolating FG% defense, they are at .415, which is also 7th in the Big 12. Last year, they gave up .430, which was 8th in the Big 12.

So yes, there has been some marginal improvement over last year, but I don't see them playing anywhere near the type of defense that Kelvin's teams played.

Keep in mind that Kelvin's last team at OU was 12th in the country, and 2nd in the Big 12 in AdjD efficiency.

I don't think you are being a jerk. But, I just wanted to point out that you answered you own question. You see it with your eyes. An observer can easily see that what they are doing and how they do it is a vast improvement over last year.

You stat guys wear me out. While I'm abit of a numbers guy myself, sometimes I get to thinking Jerry Jones is right when he says "stats are for losers".

Also, it's a bit early to start comparing stats. Some teams have played 5 Louisiana Monroe's at this point. It's hard to see how stats will shake out over the course of the season at this point.

Not exactly the most credible source on the matter the past decade.

In the only poll that matters OU is currently ranked #16 and the step child is ranked #40.

I guess that's where we would disagree. I do see some marginal improvement, but I wouldn't consider that improvement "vast."

OU's defensive efficiency number has improved roughly 3% over last year, and they are still near the bottom of the league in that category. The same can be said for FG% defense.

And again, these raw numbers are nowhere near what Kelvin's teams used to do.

The raw FG% defensive figures are probably not super comparable right now comparing teams-to-teams, but the AdjD numbers are adjusted for schedule strength.

Also - considering that I was primarily comparing OU this year to OU last year -- wouldn't the most likely scenario be that OU's defensive numbers would decline from here on out, since the schedule strength of overall conference play should be better than your non-conference schedule as a whole?

In other words, OU's results from last year already have a full season of conference play baked in, while this year just has primarily the OOC schedule. Wouldn't the most likely scenario be that OU's defensive numbers would decline slightly as we go through conference play?

While I'm abit of a numbers guy myself, sometimes I get to thinking Jerry Jones is right when he says "stats are for losers".

I tend to notice that people who say this just don't have any idea what you're supposed to do with stats. Given his team's performance over the past 15 years, I'm guessing Jerry Jones falls into that category.
