Tanner and EJ stay - Mo exploring his Pro options

some don't think he has any major "lack of athleticism"

he is not a super athlete ... but he is not a " bad" athlete

If you don't think he is below average athletically, than give me some examples of OU guards over the years that you think were far less athletic?

Even some of our "shooters" I thought moved better (Neal, Pledger, even Heskett). And those guys weren't asked to handle the ball. Cortes is only valuable as a PG that handles the ball. So really, that is where the comparison needs to be, to other true PG's.

cortes is a better athlete then all 3 of the guys you listed and for the record Heskett did play some PG

None of those are close. I’d compare him to Woodard, Michael Johnson, terry evens as far as athletes go. Scoring from the perimeter & consistent defense are far more things to worry about than athleticism.

The fixation on Cortes is weird AF. You Cortes critics all post about the 3rd string QBs on the OU roster too ad nauseum?

This doesn’t even deserve a response.

More athletic than Jordan Goldwire. Devion Harmon, Jamal beinemy, Hollis price.

I am not saying he is better than these guys. We are talking athletically!

Going a little further back, Bo Overton was not very athletic, but could shoot lights out, and was very tough and smart. Not really anything to do with the discussion, but I just thought about him when you asked your question....

Wait. You think Cortes was more athletic than Goldwire, Harmon, Price, and Jamal? I can't. I just can't.

Tell me why I’m wrong?

I wouldn't even know where to start. It's an absurd comment.

Oddly enough, Hollis is probably the closest on that list to you being right, but I think his foot speed was considerably better.

I literally remember defensive plays where Cortes was giving a player 2-3 steps, and STILL got blown by.

Athletic doesn’t mean good defender. Moving goal post.

More athletic. Absolutely.

Not even going to entertain this.

Ok. So foot speed means athletic! Got it.

It's a measurement of athleticism, sure. Especially in guards. Stop playing dumb. I think Cortes has very slow feet. Slow reaction. That is what I saw. That doesn't mean that his top end speed, or speed dribbling from one end to the next is ridiculously slow, but from a stopped position, he doesn't get going quickly at all.

Same with his explosiveness. I'm sure he can dunk with a running start, or not much traffic. But I saw him drive to the hoop, barely get off the ground, and get his stuff thrown WAY too often this year. Again, that is a sign of not having a high level of athleticism.

Bingo. Thinking a player is "athletic" because they can dunk is an interesting take.

Kenny George was 7'7 and could dunk a basketball. He was slow, pretty bad, had no B-Ball IQ. But he could dunk. So that makes him athletic. :ez-roll:

I've seen "athletic" used so many different ways on this board that the word now has no meaning. There is clearly no agreed-upon definition of the word (as it applies to basketball players), so it might be time for us all to stop using it.

The citation of a 7'7" player's ability to dunk in an effort to dismiss a 6'3" (some say he's shorter) player's ability to dunk is just laughable (and to include it in a couple of threads? Yikes).
