Tanner and EJ stay - Mo exploring his Pro options

I don't know how many times I have to post his stats. But if Cortes played 30 minutes like Goldwire did, he would average 5 turnovers a game. But alrighty.

Yes, because we all know that’s how stays work. It’s simply a given that his per minute rates would remain identical if given more playing time and experience.

I mean, he was so bad down the stretch of the season Bob P at SS said something about it. Even in the first NIT game he had 2 TO's in 5 minutes. His confidence got worse over the season. Dude just flat out struggled. To think he wasn't a walking turnover is wild to me. Mans averaged 2 in 11 minutes. Let me stop bringing facts to an opinion party.

Yeah, this fan base is odd. Trash Harkless but celebrate getting a walking turnover, a scared to shoot, inconsistent, 6'1, unathletic PG back? Woof. Not me. I was fine regardless.

The people writing Harkless off are as wrong as you are about cortes. He was a true freshman playing pg in the toughest conference in the country. Give him some time to develop.

Lots of the same folks were ripping Austin reaves and brady Manek last year. How’d that turn out?

Not me. So I don't really care about them.

Cortes ceiling is a backup PG. Once again, if he wasn't from Oklahoma would you guys still be willing to ignore the really insanely bad flaws he has? I don't think so.

he was better as a freshman then Cousins

he is a good athlete ..

he is a very very good shooter

he is 6'3

he is a very very good passer ..

he is a freshman and will improve ..

He is not a good athlete. If you watched him this year and you came away thinking he is a good athlete (compared to his peers), I honestly don't even know how to have a conversation with. Like, it's literally the first thing you notice when you watch him play.

Not saying it was you, but this board and other ou boards have a long track record for terrible hoops takes. As much as the average ou fan knows about football, they know less about hoops.

Cortes is an unfinished product. I agree he will be our backup pg next year. The coaching staff worked hard to get him to stick around. They see his potential, so I will let it play out. I am not factoring in his home state myself.

My ignore list is about to get one name longer because sheesh, life is just too short. I can feel the virtual spittle being slung from this person's posts.

Cortes needs to play a lot better than he did this year for sure.

Yes, but then most players need to perform a lot better than they do as freshmen.

Yeah but he was extremely bad. There was a flash here or there but he really didn't show a ton of potential really.

I didn't think he played terrible over the course of the year, I just don't think there is a ton of room for improvement. His athleticism (or lack thereof) is going to be a problem for him. He is just really limited in that way. He did pretty good as a freshman overcoming it as much as he could, but at the end of the day, there is only so much you can do with his athleticism at this level.

There's lots of room for improvement, for sure, but he made some very good plays, too. He kept Mason, who was Moser's guy, on the bench for most of the season, so he was doing something right.

lol at this take

We'll see. Just own it if you end up being wrong.

What is he going to improve on? Is he going to shoot better than 53% from the field? Is he going to shoot better than 57% from three? Is he going to shoot better than 90% from the FT line?

ALL of those numbers are likely to fall if he gets more playing time. So even if he does improve in other areas, his net contribution isn't likely to improve much.

Again, athleticism is his main issue. He didn't turn the ball over because he doesn't know how to dribble, or make the easy pass. He turned the ball over because at times he was overwhelmed by more athletic players pressuring him. He turned the ball over b/c the easy play wasn't always there for him, b/c he doesn't have the athleticism to create separation, etc. And he is a below average defender because his foot speed is probably the worst on the team as far as scholarship guards. That is what I see.

I'm with Boulder here, and will own up to it if we're wrong. Look at this video here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cN4fIC33Qyw.

Yes, it's a highlight video. And yes, he had plenty of bad plays last year. But he was able to read the floor and make passes that no one else on the roster could. He was overwhelmed by the size and speed of the Big 12, but he also made good plays against that same size and speed. He's a freshman and the game will slow down for him. If Lon was here, I'd be even more bullish cause he had a good track record of developing guards. I think Porter will get the best out of him, which is more than a backup PG imo.

Thats not OUhoops specific.. thats all messageboards

Pretty short highlight video. ;)

I think everybody agrees on where Cortes currently is as a player. The difference is that some think his lack of athleticism won't hold him back, and some do. There is no right answer right now. We'll have to let it play out.

But you could stick a non-college athlete into college games, and if they "try" enough, they are going to make some highlight reel plays. That is kind of the problem, just about every play he made was highlight reel b/c his athleticism doesn't allow him to make easy ones. He definitely has a good passing eye. I just don't like much else about him.

some don't think he has any major "lack of athleticism"

he is not a super athlete ... but he is not a " bad" athlete
