So Kabongo stays and Brown goes.

What does UT have at the guard spots next year? I know they have a couple of very good incoming players, but I think they are posts. Who scores from the 1-3 positions for them?

How long does Barnes keep his job with season after season horrendous underachieving. I would guess Texas is top 5 in the country in NBA placement over the past decade, yet barely a top 25 program over that stretch.

It appears that Texas has done worse as a team since Barnes made his infamous "I'm not here to win Championships. I'm here to get players to the NBA." comment.

Texas will have no juniors or seniors on scholarship next year unless there is a late addition.

What hurts Texas probably more so than any other school are early departures with guys clearly not ready for the NBA. For whatever reason, all of his players not named Durant or Aldridge went to the NBA far too soon. That constant turnover is difficult to recover from unless one is coaching one of the traditional heavy-weights like Kentucky or North Carolina.

i don't really agree with this ...

if a player either A. is a first round pick .. or B. sticks in the league then it is not a bad decision to go ...

you get much better coaching in the NBA than is college (much better than at texas)

and even if they don't make the NBA they can make a bunch of money overseas

they will probably be better without him. I think their nucleus of Kabongo, McClellan, Lewis, Holmes, Bond and Ridley can be pretty good next year. And without Brown, they will have to be more balanced which I think they are capable of. Barnes usually does his best work with low expectations.

I could see Brown's senior season going a lot like Lace Dunn's senior season went. In hindsight, Lace should have gone pro coming off of the elite 8 year and projected as a late 1st round/ early 2nd round pick.

And sometimes having a great scorer like that paralyzes a team in crunch time. Too much standing around and waiting for the "star" to create. The games I watched Texas, Brown did not deliver at crunch time.

They make the NCAA tournament every year. Thats why he keeps his job.

You have to maximize your hype and as you said, coaching is better in the NBA anyway. Coaches in college can't even interact with their players in a gym setting during the summer...laughable.

The guy is a 2 guard in the NBA. A skinny, shortish outside shooter without a lot of defense. He's not close to Avery, Augustine or Daniel Gibson.

that rule is at least changed for this year .... they can work them in small groups 2 days a week

It's been that way I think for a while (may be wrong, think it was that way when I was in school). Something like two hours per week, per group.

Barnes is getting killed by guys going to the NBA early. They will have lost three guys is two years.

Actually they lost 3 last year in Jordan Hamilton, Corey Joseph and Tristan Thompson.

Good point. I started to attempt to name all the guys that have left early from Texas lately and realized I would not even come close so I just mentioned the last two years and didn't even get that right. Had those three stayed, Texas would have been a serious force this year.

Texas has definitely lost a lot of players over the last several years. I think most of the Texas fans didn't want to admit this was a serious rebuilding year since really only J'Covan had played any serious minutes going into the season, and even he was spotty at best last year. Everybody else was new or had only played sparingly in their career (Wangmene and Chapman).

I have been thinking about this over the last few weeks. I know most everybody thinks OU will be much improved next year, and I agree with this. But if you look at the rest of the conference right now it wouldn't surprise me if OU's conference record was not much better than 2011-2012.

Texas is a great example of a team that will probably be vastly improved next year since they have 5 players back who played major minutes this year and add a very talented center in Ridley. I don't think Texas takes a step back, unless they fall apart like they did 3 years ago.

It might be too early to think about this since we don't know who returns and who leaves for the NBA. Might be a good topic to debate after NBA cutoff has passed.

Texas might be slightly improved but I don't think they will be significantly improved. Chapman and Wangmene played more minutes than any other forwards on the team. Texas returns Bond and Holmes but both are undersized and relatively inexperienced Chapman played pretty well in the Texas games I saw. Brown was the leading scorer. Combined this is a significant loss.

I expect Lewis, McClennan, Kabongo and Holmes to be improved but I am not sure their improvement will be enough to make Texas a top tier Big XII team next season. Who will be the leader? Andrew Dick and Michael Dean are probably not going to be able to do that (they are the only seniors on a team that will have no juniors).
