The Big 12 has accepted UCF, Cincy, Houston, and BYU

Re: So we may be seeing the Big 12 RIP.

The Big 10 would be a laughingstock if they add Kansas football after adding Rutgers and Maryland

Yeah but that basketball conference suddenly becomes a power. Plus also adding Iowa State or Oklahoma State off sets that some. But we have no idea what will happen till we actually see OU and Texas pull the trigger.

One would agree there's plenty of speculation to boot as the digital media is bloated with it. There are so many possible scenarios that it could make one's eyes spin. Some outcomes are expected while others are pure fantasy and some of it is entertaining, but on another level some of it is purely delusional. Well see.

Who cares how bad the bottom two teams are?

And Rutgers is about to get a lot better under Schiano.

Re: So we may be seeing the Big 12 RIP.

I’m sure FOX can’t wait to put Ohio State v Kansas on their big noon kickoff….they are looking for matchups that will draw viewers…..Kansas can’t get 15,000 people to that dump they call a stadium

Re: So we may be seeing the Big 12 RIP.

There aren't any good football teams left to add that make sense for the Big 10. I know football is king, but bball does have an impact as well. They (the Big 10) are going to want to add teams if the SEC does. KU has been long-rumored to be somebody they would target. Would give the Big 10 some pretty salty bball programs.

Re: So we may be seeing the Big 12 RIP.

It is all about brands going forward. What can you sell and who is willing to buy at a premium price.

Bundled TV packages are going away, which means adding teams like Rutgers for a "market" is no longer relevant.

After this move, the SEC will dominate (at least 75%) of the marketshare when it comes to football product. Add SEC fanbases lust for other sports, with the majority of those aligning with OU's, this will drive content and those willing to buy even for "lesser" sports.

Finally, add the huge bump in $$$ and I believe this will drive OU's athletic department in getting a new softball field, redoing the baseball field, adding to the west side of the football stadium, and for this board, hopefully a new basketball arena.

I still don't see how these super leagues are good for the sport itself... I get how the money is good for some of the programs, but why is this good for the sport?

The non-power teams need to fight this... and I think they can. Vanderbilt, Kentucky, Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Mississippi State, etc should tell the blue bloods to **** off. Tell them to go make a power league with Just OU, Texas, Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, etc and have fun with that.

The teams you mentioned, which should snub their collective noses at the power teams, are in need of something and that something is money. In other words, it ain't gonna happen.

I'm old enough to remember the 8 team regional conferences like the Big 8, but that ship sailed in 1991 when Arkansas and South Carolina moved to the SEC and then the SWC totally collapsed.

Times have changed and even more so when it comes to how people are consuming TV/sports and I didn't even mention the NLI ruling, which again makes more sense for OU to move to the SEC, as they can sell bigger exposure to recruits.

The glory days of small regional conferences are long gone.

I don't know why they wouldn't add ISU. Good in football and decent in bball.
I know they aren't the academic school the BIG wants, but it is time for the BIG to drop this requirement int he time of super conferences

Re: So we may be seeing the Big 12 RIP.

Some other discussion points:

1. The Big 12 went to ESPN and Fox about starting negotiations for new contracts and were met with a tepid response (this came from Tech's sources in May). If this is true, why is the Big 12 a viable option going forward?

2. OU is very angry about the 11 am football games, in particular the OU/NU game that OU worked hard to set up to honor the '71 Game of the Century contest. OU asked Bowlsby to help with the TV networks and Bowlsby simply shrugged his shoulders. A game OU wanted to highlight was stuck at a bad time slot.

3. The Pac 12 is in serious trouble and the Big 12 could have made a legitimate play but appears that Bowlsby didn't want to pick off members from his old conference.

ISU is an AAU member so the academics are fine, but is ISU a big enough brand. I hope they find a good landing spot.

ISU doesn’t add any TV sets or a recruiting base to the market the Big already has, and I don’t think they would want to gamble on them remaining competitive in football once the inevitable coaching change happens. I love the ISU fan base and how passionate they are, but I just don’t see what the school would bring to the table for the Big Ten.

Re: So we may be seeing the Big 12 RIP.

I hate bloated conferences, so my preference is that no conference is so big that you don't play every other team in the conference in a given season (and twice in hoops), but those days are clearly long gone. Sixteen teams is not a conference, it's a conglomeration and is purely about making money.

yea those schools don't want to give up 30-50 million a year in revenue. they make 45 million a year right now without OU and texas. that is estimated to go up to 60-75 million a year after the addition of OU and texas. leaving the SEC would see them form a new league with no brands and get 15-30 million a year.
Even you cant honestly say you would give up that kind of money for your school for "tradition"

with 4 pods of 4 every schools plays home and away against every school every 4 years ..

that makes it a conf .. (and i agree with you 2 8 team divisions does not)

We are on the same page... I think we should celebrate that. :)
