LS,
I honestly feel like I have as little knowledge regarding this Sooner squad than I have had in a long time. Lots of new faces and lots of "unheard of" guys.
Based on what I have heard, this is how I would break it down:
- Cade starts for sure. He will be a leader of this team and a guy that will hopefully set the standard of what it means to play for this program.
PG - No telling who gets the nod between Newell, Blair, or Taylor. There should be some serious competition going on for the starting job, which is a great thing imo. I hope they start really getting after it this summer and it makes for some intense pick-up games and workouts. Blair has the advantage of being a guy that has played D1 ball before, but other than that, I am not sure who will win this battle. I like that all three of them are at least tall enough on paper to play on the wing (especially TJ).
Wings - Cade will take up one spot (unless he plays the 4 which might be a decent option due to his toughness and experience). The other spot will be also be fairly highly contested between Pledger, Cam, and TJ. Capel has shown in the past that he likes to go with experience, so it wouldn't surprise me if Pledger started off the year as the guy. A lot of that will depend on whether or not Bird is able to drop a few pounds and increase his quickness. My gut tells me that it will be Cam by conference play though.
Posts - At this point, I have got to pencil in CJ washington as a starter due to his ability to rebound. The most likely candidate for the other spot would be Fitzgerald, but like Pledger, he really is going to have to work hard this offseason and improve his lateral quickness (really needs to drop some weight as well. I don't see Cam being the type of guy to play the four as a freshman, but that is just based on the times that I have watched him play. Cade has a better shot of getting some minutes in the post (especially against smaller teams like OSU).
So many unknowns! It will be fun to watch this team compete during the open scrimmages and exhibition games. Plenty of incentive for these guys to work hard this offseason and earn a starting spot.
Edit: Don't sleep on Honore or Tyler Neal. They will both get a fair look. Honore's status seems a bit up in the air at this point (I have heard two very different accounts of his status with the team), but the guy has some offensive game. Neal may grow an inch or two in the next 4-6 months and could be a factor for some minutes in the post next year.
