Thoughts on Bedlam

Brown might be a 1st team Big 12 player this year yet nobody ever mentions him.

Also that "hell hole" statement by Capel was a compliment meaning it was a tough place to play. He even stated that during the press conference. Why do so many sooners think he meant that the place was a dump

Need some beach front property in Arizona?

I'll also add that if this game is going to come down to three point shooting, that favors OSU. I'd say Brown and Forte are having the best seasons so far of anybody that will be playing in the game as far as 3 point shooting goes. Brown has been unconscious from deep of late, having two games with 7 makes in each (14 of 18 in those two games). OU won't be able to keep up if it comes down to that.

Now where was it in my post that I stated, or even implied, that the "hell hole" comment was anyone's way of calling Stillwater (or GIA) a dump? I used that term only to identify which game I was referring to.

I believe Blake did not travel with the team, because Capel didn't think he would be able to stop him from suiting up.

You are probably right, but seems like I remember the camera showing him in street clothes?

I believe you're making the same point that I made in my post: If OSU shoots a high percentage from three-point range, the Cowboys will win the game.

I know. It was just a general question to the board as to why some sooners think it was a negative comment

Fair enough. Okay, I've got a question for you: Why is it that when I mention OSU on this board, I type "Cowboys" with with a capital "C"? But when OSU fans come onto an OU board, they always refer to OU as the "sooners," (lower case "s") – or something even more offensive. Care to elaborate?

Typing is not our strong point.

Buddy Love = lockdown on Smart. Too bad round 2 has to wait for hopefully the Big 12 Tourney.

It's not unusual for the Sooners to beat the Cowboys in Stillwater, even when OSU has more "star" players and/or the higher ranked team. Remember the "hell hole" game of a few years ago? And that was with Jeff Capel at the helm. Now we've got CLK calling the shots.

It is unusual for OU to beat a ranked OSU team in Stillwater. That's happened once in 20+ years -- the 2000 game against OSU's Elite Eight squad from that year.

The "hell hole" game was against an OSU team that finished 17-16 and lost in the first round of the NIT. It also lost two other home conference games that year.

and I believe we play better defense than the Cowboys.

You may believe that, but it would be incorrect.

Here is where the two squads rank in Pomeroy's adjusted defensive efficiency:

OSU: 11th (1st in the Big 12)
OU: 48th (5th in the Big 12)

Probably for the same reason that I get referred to as "sheep herder" or "sheep humper" or "Stupid Aggie" on every other post on this site.

I'm sorry, but what are you talking about?

In their past 20 games in Stillwater, OU has faced six ranked oswho squads in Stillwater, going 2-4 (.333) against the aggies.

But you said 20+ years, so let's take it back to 1990. That leaves OU at 3-5 (.375) against ranked oswho teams.

I could go back further, but from 1959 through 1989, the aggies were ranked just once when they faced the Sooners at historic GIA. That was in 1983, and you guessed it -- OU won.

By contrast, over the past 20 games in Norman, oswho has faced 8 ranked OU squads. They've gone 1-7 (.125) in those games.

Go back to 1990, and the number of ranked OU teams jumps to 11, and oswho's record "improves" to 2-9 (.181).

I'll leave the '80s out of it because, well, it's just embarrassing for you guys.

Stupid Aggie

Just kidding too easy. Sure is wonderful to be talking about Bedlam basketball. Even though I think both teams are pretty average as compared to some of the teams of the past, it's still nice to see this game have relevence!

Back in the day with Tubbs v Hamilton and Sutton v Sampson - epic games and tons of talent. How about the last game in GI arena in March of 2000. Nolan Johnson was unstoppable. Sampson went one out four on the baseline and Nolan scored at will - it was awesome. And the OSU President, came out at half time and they "captured" teh spirit of the arena is some urn and then the Sooners came back from 13 points down to win. Awesome memories!

Here's the box score from that night. Great names on both sides. Sure does make you long for the days of great college basketball

Borrowed from Soonersports.com (while NOT being able to get the baseball GameTracker to work):

FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
• Oklahoma has won 11 of the last 17 overall meetings with Oklahoma State and holds a 129-94 all-time series advantage. The Sooners have won three of the last seven Bedlam matchups played in Stillwater (posted regular season sweeps in 2006, 2008 and 2009).
• OU never trailed in a 77-68 win over OSU on Jan. 12, the Sooners' ninth straight home victory in the series. OU shot a season-high .615 from 3-point range (8-for-13) and recorded a .905 mark at the free throw line (19-for-21). Romero Osby led four Sooners in double figures with 17 points and was followed by Buddy Hield (15), Amath M'Baye (15) and Steven Pledger (11).
• Oklahoma has already won more games away from home this year (7-5 record) than it did over the last two seasons combined (6-25 record). Its seven wins away from home are tied with Kansas for the most by a Big 12 team. OU is 4-4 in true road games this season (2-3 in Big 12 play).
• In Big 12 play, opponents have made 77 3-pointers to the Sooners' 44. That's a difference of 99 points, or 9.0 per game. In five conference road games, opponents have made 45 treys to OU's 18 (difference of 16.2 points per game).
• Hield sustained a fractured fifth metatarsal in his right foot in the second half of OU's win over TCU on Monday and underwent successful surgery on Tuesday. The freshman guard is expected to be out four to six weeks. A starter the last 13 games, Hield is averaging 8.6 points, 4.3 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game on the season to rank fourth, third and second on the team, respectively. His 610 minutes (26.5 per game) are most on the squad. In OU's Jan. 12 win over Oklahoma State, Hield finished with 15 points, four rebounds and five assists in 37 minutes. He made a career-high three 3-pointers on five attempts.

I miss having so many guards that could score it efficiently. You are talking about some of the best shooters OU basketball has seen, all on one roster. Plus Nolan Johnson who was very unique in how we used him at times. Seeing a list of guards like that is why I don't consider us "back" just yet.

By that standard, though, we've been "not back" for fully a decade.

I think 2007 is the first year you really see the guard talent on the roster go way down. Part of that, obviously, is that Reynolds never made it to campus.
