Tiny Gallon vs Daniel Orton

The two aren't even close IMO. Orton is in much better shape, hasn't had weight issues, hasn't had attitude problems, hasn't had off-court issues, he's taller by at least a couple inches, he's much more athletic, he has a longer reach, he plays above the rim, and he is an innately skilled shot blocker. Gallon plays below the rim, for all his offensive "promise", he never put his stamp on games, he is one of the all-time bad defensive players I've ever watched...I could go on, but I think you get the point.

Orton is also clearly a center and he has something he does really well he can hang his hat on (shot-blocking). Tiny isn't long enough to play 5, and he's certainly not athletic enough to play 4, plus he doesn't do any one thing particularly well, especially not well enough to overcome his shortcomings.

I know its not fashionable around here to acknowledge that Orton is any good, but I wish he was there when the Thunder picked (which he won't be).

Orton's defense and shot blocking ability gives him an advantage over Gallon. Tiny may struggle to stay in shape and defend his position in the NBA.

But both players would have been wise to stay in school and improve their stock in next year's draft. I think they'll make a roster and get meaningful minutes at some point, providing they work hard and dedicate themselves to getting better. I just don't expect to see future NBA star written on their foreheads anytime soon.

I think that Orton made the right move, Tiny, not so much.

There is a reason he led the McDonalds AA game in scoring and had 23-15 vs Baylor, 13-18 vs Okie St, and 15-9 vs Texas. Because he's a stud.

He also went for 6 & 6 vs KU, 4 & 2 vs Texas & 2 & 0 vs A&M.
That there in lies the problem.

Tiny Gallon is not an NBA player.

He sat on the bench against MU because he couldn't handle the speed of the game. How's he going to deal with an NBA pace?

I think he will end up being a solid NBA guy. It may take him a year or two in the NBADL or riding the pine, but he has great hands and solid footwork for a big. He just needs to develop some defensive instincts and a killer attitude on the glass (we saw flashes towards the end of the year).

Who won that Mizzou game anyway? :eddie187_jpg_xs:

I could see Tiny having a Glenn Davis type career.

For the record, I agree with people that have doubts about Tiny making it in the league. I'm just not a believer. That said, Chad Ford is hands down the best draft guy covering the NBA draft every year, and here is a comment he made on twitter today when asked about Gallon:

He's a 1st round talent. I've been surprised how many GMs like him. 25 to 40? RT @MatthewEads Do you see Tiny Gallon getting drafted at all?

That is absolutely stunning to me...if he winds up going around 25, he'll probably wind up going ahead of Willie...We will have to wait and see, but its like they say: Only one team has to like you enough...

Just for the record Gallon has been hitting the gym hard and has not only bulked up but toned up as well. Too many people look at him having to lose weight when toning and bulking up are more important.

Glad to hear that, Quick. I wish him well and hope he realizes his potential on and off the court.

He has some growing up to do between the ears that's for sure but what 18 year old doesn't?

To follow up on elmo's post there have been quite a few scouts showing up to his workouts. I really wish he would had stayed a year but maybe he did make the right move for him.

Well, even if he is a first round pick, I'm not sure he's equipped himself to succeed in the league. Who knows if its a good choice ultimately, but I don't think he's ready to play right now, so that second contract is the one he needs to worry about.

That said, I'm glad for the program that he left. Not because I have anything against him...I don't. I just think if a kid doesn't have any real interest in being in school, the team is better off without him.

I think that it would be great if Tiny got drafted in the first round. TMG is the only player that just "baffled" me, but its his life.

I agree. TMG was the one that really didn't want to be in school. Tiny had people in his ears telling him he was a 1rst rounder and was actually in class the day he announced he was leaving.

I don't doubt it for a second. Think Tiny and Willie have gotten a pretty bad rap re: public opinion. Personally, I'd like Tiny to get the last laugh, get drafted in first round, get guaranteed money and shut all the haters up. Seems like a pretty good young guy to me.
