Traditional PF or 4 out 1 in

Not saying what you said is not true, but that wasn't the team that won the championship in 2002. Swin Cash, Tamika Williams, Aisha Jones weren't guards...AND OU didn't play 4 out then. We had three interchangeable players...to a degree and then the post and power forward.
Well, that is the way I saw the game in San Antonio. Maybe I missed something. And 2014, I thought they had a traditional power forward...certainly, not a guard playing the 4. AM I just way off base?

Well, in order to run the 4 out, you don't have to define all the players as guards. Caton played the 4 the same way as later players (Leah, Amanda, etc.) If you will remember, she had a lot of perimeter 3s. And UConn in that year, really didn't have a true post, let alone a traditional power forward. The 3 you mentioned were all face the basket players, and UConn (like OU) ran the motion offense.

Tango is exactly right! You don't have to have 4 guards to run a 4 out motion. You can have one back to the basket post and a post that likes to face up and shoot the perimeter shot. Perfect examples are Leah Rush and Caton Hill.

Okay, I wrongly inferred from posts in this thread and previous posts that it was 4 guards and a post. I know Caton Hill could hit the three but she played near the basket a lot with the post player (whose name escapes me) in 2002 season or that is how I remember it.

I don't know about Ashja Jones being a true post but she has been called a post when playing in the WNBA.

Also, with Ashley and Courtney, were we running the 4 out? I also do not remember Amanda shooting the three much until her senior year. NOW, I guess that doesn't mean we weren't running the 4 out with Amanda before.

So basically, now I am just trying to gain some knowledge.

Appreciate your responses, Tango and Zac.

I think the stretch 4 is better in the women's game as the 3 point shot is a lot like a dunk in the men's game. Having a quality stretch 4 can pull the other team's bigs away from the basket and open up offensive rebounds and create better room to work for the 5.

I think Coach Coale was ahead of the curve when she put that in many years ago.

The question is, would we be more productive if Maddie played more like Caton or at the top of the circle. She is tall, jumps well, good hands, etc. Inside, one would think she could score at least 8 points in the paint, 3 points behind the arc, and 3 or more points at the free throw line. She should grab more than 3.5 rebs per game which is her current average. Right now, T'ona averages more rebounds than Maddie while playing less minutes. Caton could stretch the defense but she could also bang inside. Her last year at OU she averaged 12.3 ppg and 6.2 rpg. I think most agree that Maddie is more athletic than Caton. You can actually throw lobs near the basket and Maddie can jump, catch, and shoot in one motion. Maddie's field goal and 3-pt shooting percentages are higher than Caton's. Maddie is also a better passer than Caton. Put her in a position to score down low or feed an assist to Kaylon would be hard to stop for most teams.

I just believe if we allow Baylor and Texas to dominate the paint/boards we are going to have a hard time beating them.

I think that Maddie began the year thinking of herself primarily in the role of distributor. After two games, she had two rebounds and wasn't scoring that much. The NT game changed her attitude, something that she remarked on in an interview. Suddenly, she came out on fire in the BYU game, and it set the tone for the game. In the past two games, she has averaged six rebounds per game, despite not really playing as many minutes. There were a couple of minutes in the Bradley game when we had no post on the floor, and Maddie was the post on defense. There were a couple of times when Maddie was wide open from the three on the wing when T'Ona drove the lane to miss a layup in a crowd. Not always do we make the right decisions.
