Trae Young's Kansas Postgame Tweet

I wonder how many people that have a problem with trae's confidence love Baker's?

I love Baker's confidence....but i don't remember him coming out and publically saying help was on the way and publically claiming the starting spot before he got on campus.

ITs a completely different circumstance though

Baker wasn't told he was going to be the starter and the starter we had just had a YUGE game vs Bama in the Sugar Bowl.

Young has already been told he will start from day 1.

It seems to me that it's much easier to bring a kid who might be a little bit over confident back to earth than it is to build up the confidence of a kid who has lost his confidence. The realities of playing a 30+ game schedule of D1 basketball will temper him a little bit. For now, I love his enthusiasm for his team and his teammates.

I don't understand why a kid who is a McDonald's All-American can't tell a team with 10 wins at the end of the season that "help is on the way"? Why is that looked at as being cocky/arrogant? Isn't that what every recruit is supposed to be for a team? Coaches don't recruit guys with the idea of them not being to be able to help hopefully immediately?!? I could understand if this team had 20+ wins but even then he's by far the highest ranked recruit on the roster. The other important thing here that others have pointed out is for one he knows the guys and for two probably better than most incoming recruits know future teammates given he's from the area and around the team a lot. Personally I don't have a problem with it given he NEEDS to be that sort of help and obviously Kruger feels the same telling him he can have the keys to the car long before Kruger has seen him play his first college game as well.

And I'll add that he also tweeted out something else which every OU Fan would love: https://twitter.com/TheTraeYoung/status/836310492427735040 -- I am sure we all saw this on the broadcast, but thought it would be good to remind that he's got a love for this team!

Dude loves this team and wants to help it succeed... I love his attitude toward OU and can't complain that he may be a bit cocky (I'm not sure that's how I'd label it)... All in all we need that leader who's got "that Dog in Him"! Trae Young is that dude!

i conceded Trae is different b/c of his current preexisting ties to the sooners.

Every recruit is supposed to be what you say...but to come out and publicly say it lacks any humility....something that I look for

I know Young is an unreal talent. But I think it is strange that Kruger would "promise" him the starting job. Take Young out of the equation. I don't think it's ever a good idea to promise ANY signee a starting job, in any sport. Like Stoops says, you come in and earn it. Now, all we know is Young told him he can "have the keys" to the team. No one besides Kruger, Young, and his family really know what all was said. In this case it would seem that Young is obviously so much better than Strong and Shepherd, that it's no big deal and really a forgone conclusion. And, if it did turn out that a muscled-up and year-experienced Shepherd was better than Young at the beginning Kruger would be an idiot not to play him. And we know Lon's not an idiot.

All that being said in the context I don't have an issue with what Young said. To me, it makes it sound like he's solid as ever and totally invested in this program. The more articles I read about Young it seems like he was always going to go to OU. I do think KU and others made him think about things, and think about things ALOT, but he just seems like a kid that grew up a Sooner and wants to help "his" team.

I do hope that people temper their expectations, some. I think like any freshman Young will have an adjustment period. Even though he played in an elite AAU league with other great athletes, did they play as physical on D as they will play in the Big 12? What about when Huggins' gorillas start leaning on him and pressing him, hammering him? I hope Trey starts a steady diet of weights and protein shakes, immediately. I hope he starts playing pickup with our guys as soon as is legal so they can start roughing him up a little. Can't wait for next year!

Self told him "Trae, you will be the starting PG at KU next year." Read the USA Today article. It's called RECRUITING. Although, if Grahmn comes back to KU (which I believe he will), I think he would be the starting PG with or w/o Young. Young is good enough to beat out who we have at OU.

I have no problem telling a kid the talent of Trae that he has the job if I'm LK. It's not like LK told McGusty the same thing...so he isn't blowing smoke up all these kids.

but hypothetically, that can bite you in the arse if the kids doesn't put in the work and then you bench him or don't start him b/c of that and he becomes a malcontent

Spot on analysis, cvanglid!

There's also another way to look at what Self reportedly told Young. Unlike a few posters here who decided to continue this tired argument about Trae's "cockiness" [I see as confidence], Self knew he was good enough to start from day one, even at KU. That's why Bill gets paid the big bucks as one of the top coaches in the country, while fans like us just talk about coaching.

Does anyone really believe TY won't work his tail off to continue his success in an OU uniform? He didn't become a top twenty recruit and an elite PG who earned a spot in the McDonald's All-American game by magically flipping a switch. I can assure you, he worked hard to achieve a high level very few recruits enjoy, this or any other year. Self and Kruger know that. So, if both coaches told the kid he would start, why would anyone here question their judgment?

Geeeez, people! Find something to talk about that makes more sense!

To clarify my post, I was talking about Kruger not Self. But, help me understand your post... Are you saying that even though the article says that Self told Young he would start next year at KU, that you believe if Graham came back, that he would start ahead of Young? So if you were Young's parents you would be OK with Graham starting ahead of Young when the reason you signed is you were promised the PG position next year?

Don't like it.

I may be reading too much into it but there is a difference in confidence and being cocky.

Tweeting stuff like this could rub current guys the wrong way. He has put in any work yet and doesn't have a right to say some of this stuff.

I don't have a good feeling about this kid. I hope I'm wrong but won't be surprised if I'm right

He's played with the team several times and they know he's already the best player. They know help is on the way.
