Some people on this board have criticized Coach Kruger for failing to land ELITE level recruits, but we have landed some VERY nice transfers ( Osby, M'Baye, Spangler, Thomas ). Do you guys believe solid young talent combined with solid EXPERIENCED transfers can ever get us ''to the next level" i.e. final four, or do we all agree on the premise that eventually Kruger is going to have to simply get better talent out of the high school ranks?

I think this team is capable of making a run to the final 4. So I don't believe he needs to get better talent.

Can you imagine if he did land a big time player like Blake with the solid group he normally will have? That would be fun to watch!

Not necessarily better talent but more of it so there's little to no drop off when the reserves come in. We also have pretty good chemistry among out starters which beats having the team under Capel's last year (heralded players but little chemistry).

Our last final four team had a couple Jucos and a transfer right?

Trying to remember...too many beers since then... but Quannas, Ace and Selvy were either Jucos or Transfers, right?

Even Ebi was a Juco I believe...

Can't rely on transfers. Nice when we get them, but that can't be a big part of your recruiting strategy.

ebi signed with us out of HS, then went juco. from Tulsa. McClain maybe? returned for his jr and sr years i believe. Ace started with huggy bear at Cincy, went Juco.

Fred Hoiberg may disagree... has anyone seen the commercial he has and his dance moves? lol pretty good stuff. I really like that guy.

Osby wasn't his.

I wish he would bring more transfers in. Transfers are this generations juco player. talented kids are transferring left and right. Compliment them with high school players and it's successful.

It's no longer I'm terrible and I'm going to transfer. It's I'm impatient and I'm transferring. Look at Wiltjer. Won a national championship. Afraid of losing playing time and now his team is 2nd behind the team he left.

coaches also are moving around more these days, too. so, players also are on the move. the ncaa rules are pretty pliant, seems.

OU hoops has always had been somewhat reliant on jucos and transfers, nothing new in my lifetime as a fan. since the mid 70's.

Yeah, D1 transfers have been great for us under Kruger.

Even under Capel, Ryan Wright was a solid contributor, if not a star.

Billy Donavan has done pretty well with transfers too. That is, every year except this one!

Ha no offense to the guy.. but Ryan was the worst ou player I've seen in an ou jersey.. think Arent was probably better but Ryan played out of desperation

No offense, but your exposure to OU hoops must be fairly limited.

A veteran coach like Kruger can make it work with transfers. Think Eddie Sutton from 11 yerars ago. He struck out on every one of those elite 2002 prospects from the Sooner state (Sheldon Williams, Kevin Bookout, etc). He grabbed some transfers and JUCOs, and turned them into a Final Four team. While not an ideal way to build a program, those veteran coaches know how to make that work.

I disagree.

Ryan Wright was better than you're remembering. He played 2 years at UCLA where he was teammates with Russell Westbrook and went to a Final Four, and then 2 years at OU where he was teammates (and backup) to Blake Griffin and went to a Final Four. He averaged 4.4 ppg and 4.3 boards his senior year, and appeared in 30 games averaging over 18 minutes/game….. better stats than DJ Bennett. OU has had a lot worse players than Ryan Wright. He's actually been successful playing overseas.

Check out his NCAA rings at the bottom of this page. Impressive. Ryan Wright

By comparison, Casey Arent played in 24 games his senior year averaging 6 minutes/game and 1.8 points and 1.2 boards per game.

Have you forgotten about Nick Thompson? He was named a team captain as a juco transfer in 2010 and lasted 17 games before Capel benched him and he transferred at the semester. He was overmatched at high D1 basketball. Not his fault.

way worse players than Ryan Wright. I thought him and Juan Patillo really helped the frontcourt depth for the 2009 elite 8 run, although a lot of that was on pure talent from Blake and Crocker draining 3's against cuse' zone

Ryan Wright was a quality backup big man. People had unrealistic expectations because he was an elite recruit coming from a UCLA program that was on top of the CBB world. He would be great playing 10 or so minutes on this team.

The odd thing about saying Ryan Wright was so bad is he was better than Kyle Cannon and Orlando Allen who were both on the team in 2009. In 2010 he was clearly better than Allen, Hardrick and Honore (I am not sure if he was on scholarship).
