Per the Des Moines Register,
"The last time I saw a coach intentionally yell while an opposing player shot a free throw was at a sixth grade AAU game in 2001.

And this coach wasn’t making almost $2 million a year to coach basketball, like Oklahoma State’s Travis Ford does.

But Ford took Big 12 coaching to a new low in Wednesday’s 87-76 loss at Iowa State. On several occasions, Ford waited until just before a Cyclones player released a free-throw attempt to bark orders. On one occasion, the Iowa State student body got on Ford, who stared back at them.

Was Ford’s barking an attempt at gamesmanship? Probably. Was it childish? No question."

What I don't understand is why Travis is always sitting down on his knees on the sideline floor. Stand up, Travis!

I don't have a problem with him yelling while the opponent shoots free throws. He's a competitor. I actually like it. I would do the same thing if I were a coach.

One thing I loved about Sampson (one of the many) was his passion he showed particularly in his earlier days. Pumping the fists and throwing his jacket and tie. That rubs off on the players and that was a reason they always played so hard for Kelvin. I think Ford is able to get his team to play off the passion too.

I don't really understand all the angst aimed at Ford from the folks on this board? I've always admired him but we are the same age and I remember him in college.

It's called "pulling a Del Negro." Vinny does it all the time. It's bush league.

He even throws a towel:

I remember a couple of years ago, Scott Drew would wait until one of our players was getting ready to launch his free throw shot to scream, "REBOUND!!!". I thought it was pretty unprofessional at the time.

I'm a little surprised you feel that way. I have no problem with fans doing it, but a coach? Really? Can you imagine Coach Kruger doing it, and would you be okay with it if he did?

I can't imagine him doing it and I sure wouldn't like it if he did. Being competitive is one thing, but that's very different from a win-at-(almost)-any-cost attitude, and that tactic on the part of Ford (if he's really doing that) smacks of the latter.

But this is a coach who openly booed the officials from the sidelines, so little he does should surprise. And we can rest assured that Smart's penchant for flopping is not entirely of his own making. Ford obviously approves of that tactic, at the very least, or he'd have put a stop to it long ago.

oswho can have the guy. He fits in well in Stillwater.

It doesn't really fit Kruger and his style, which I like very much too. I could picture Tubbs in his younger days hollering when the other team is shooting FT's.

I like people who like to compete. I may not always like the choices they make in the heat of competition but I love and respect the passion.

He's either praying or...well, we know he's not praying.

Being passionate is one thing and Kelvin was definitely passionate on the sideline. What Ford does is childish and an excellent example of poor sportsmanship.

It just doesn't seem very classy to me and I wouldn't like it if our coach did it.

Where's propoke? Shocked he hasn't been in to white knight the Hillbilly.

I get what you are saying, however, what would you think about a coach who cut the nets down in an oppositions gym after a big win?

To the victor go the spoils...Travis Ford hasn't won anything yet.

Probably not a good plan if you want to win friends at KU. Billy said and did a lot of things that weren't politically correct at the time. That was Billy. That doesn't make it right.

I wouldn't want my coach to scream while an opposing player shoots free throws.

I wouldn't want my coach to complain because an opposing player was put on an all conference tournament team and her player was left off or because a freshman shot and missed a 3 pointer with the shot clock winding down when her team was already beaten.

I'm just funny that way.

Wow... there are a lot of degenerates that post here that I could easily see saying this... but to see it was you saying it actually blew my mind.

A coach doing this sort of thing is one of the most bush league things I have ever seen. It's not competitiveness, it's dirty. If any coach of mine ever did this I would immediately lose all respect for him. The head coach should have SO MANY other things to be thinking about and considering in his mind at that moment other than distracting an opposing player like the fat guy in a mexican wrestling mask does.

But, I shouldn't be surprised... this is the same coach that I saw just this season walk towards a ref as if he was going to complain and actually cupped his hand around his mouth and boo'd a ref. lol

I agree, however, I loved it when Billy did that (cut down the nets)!

Like I said earlier, I don't particularly like what actions some competitors use/do in the heat of competition but I like the fire of it. I remember that was one of my beefs with Gary Gibbs, he wouldn't really display the fire sometimes when it was needed. I'd rather my coach was coaching with his hair on fire than sitting on his hands the entire game. Having said that, I love Lon's approach too. He's on fire when he needs to be and knows how to work officials and be classy.

I think Ford will regret at some point some of his actions, but from my viewpoint he just wants to win. That's fine as long as he's following the rules. No rule exists that you can't holler when an opponent is shooting FT's, so it's not illegal.

Probably a little strong saying I would do it but I've been known to overreact in the heat of competition. That's why its so hard on me to coach my kids church league (Upward) games because I want to win but in Upward winning is secondary.

I should have just said I don't have a problem with it. Now, if he does it in the bedlam game and we miss the shot I reserve the right to complain. :p

As was mentioned above, the idiot Scott Drew used to do this when Baylor played at the LNC. If Ford is doing stuff that even the buffoon Drew figured out was petty and a bit dirty, that says all that you need to know.

I loved Billy during his time in Norman and I still think of him fondly and take great pride as a Sooner fan in what he accomplished.

But I wouldn't want another coach that brash at OU.

I don't really want another Brian Bosworth on the football team, either.

I don't know if it's a sign of maturity on my part or of advancing age (meaning I'm an old stick in the mud now).
