Travis Ford tossed from his son's HS basketball game

Have a friend there at Bville. I think ref wanted to toss him. He didn't make a scene.

LOL

OSU is probably behind it. Trying to get him to blow up and get arrested so they can break his contract

The conspiracy theory is the ref was an OU fan.

Here's a photo of Ford's Walk of Shame:

If all he yelled was "Blow your whistle" and "Do your job" after a controversial non-call, then the ref had a quick trigger. The DO article said the Stillwater coaches and a bunch of fans were yelling, too. He didn't cuss and what he said was mild compared to some fans

As a long-time ref, you learn to tune out the crowd. I honestly didn't hear them. You can't have rabbit ears and do that job. I bet I didn't eject more than 2-3 fans in the 100's of games I called and most of them were drunk (one came out to the free throw line to protest a call during the game ... a woman).

Maybe "blow your whistle" sounded like "blow it outyoura$$hole"

Thats exactly what was said.... Listen Id love for this to be a "story" but this was a ref with a quick trigger...

Sounds like the ref needs professional help.

Sounds like a little man syndrome Ref threw out a little man syndrome Fan.

Napoleons all over the place!

I believe you. I was usually so focused on the game as a ref, I didn't hear the fans. Sometimes if I was really focused, I didn't even hear the coaches yelling for a timeout. ... I'm glad they changed that rule this rule where players have to call the TO. If the ref was doing his job, I don't know how he knew it was Ford or another fan that yelled at him.

I bet the ref regretted doing it after he kicked Ford out. In Texas a school can blackball a ref from calling any of their games. I bet that ref is on some lists...... or soon will be.

I'm sure there is another side to the story, but we've all had some bad games. Certainly bad calls. I remember one time a big 6'9" kid had 2 fouls before the half, and he was a high D1 recruit in a big game (leading career rebounder at a D1 school). Just before half he went up to defend a shot and I anticipated he was going to foul the shooter for his 3rd foul in the first half, but he didn't. I had already blown my whistle and knew immediately I had missed the call. Luckily for me he blocked the shot out of bounds and I quickly opened my fist to an open hand for an out of bounds call. I had blown my whistle before the out of bounds actually happened but nobody noticed but me. I knew..... and still remember it.

Ref needs to be disciplined, this is ridiculous.

They are, but what do you do at the HS level? They can skip scheduling him for varsity games. Not schedule him for Stillwater games. It's tough to recruit and retain HS and JHS referees. It's a tough job and doesn't pay well. You have to enjoy it.

I know I had nights where I left work early to drive 100 miles for a couple of games. You leave work before 5:00 drive 2 hours, run for 3 hours, call 2 games, get yelled at, get home without dinner around midnight. Then you get paid less than $100 plus mileage and do it all over the next day. I averaged 125 games a season at the HS level plus AAU games.

I remember one night refereeing a HS girls varsity game with a relatively new and young female ref (I was a "trainer" for new refs for our chapter). She was very tentative with her calls. No question. One long-time male coach just took her apart in the first half and she was in tears and was a nervous wreck. I talked to the coach at halftime and asked him to back off ..... he knew he had been too rough. She didn't want to ever ref again. We lost a lot of refs that way..... particularly the women.

They schedule 3 refs for HS varsity games now. Probably only 2 for JV or junior high games. I had many nights where a ref didn't show up for a JHS game and I ended up calling the game by myself. I had a wife and 3 kids and didn't want to call every night of the week. Ironically, I finally gave it up after we became empty nesters. My wife didn't like me calling games every Friday and Saturday night....... sometimes she would go and read a book in the stands. I gave it up 7-8 years ago but periodically still get some calls to help.

I was at the game and he was not loud. Until I saw the athletic director escorting him out I didn't realize someone had been tossed. That ref crew is terrible and they ref in Bixby a lot. Not uncommon for someone to get tossed. The girls game before that they were threatening to toss the coach.

Travis Ford told my wife afterwards if he knew he was going to get tossed he would have said more. It was really quite ridiculous.

Per Swaim (so take it for what its worth), the official will not be calling any more of the tournament.

If you're a D-1 head coach, it would seem to be wise to resist ragging on the refs at a high school game, no? I wasn't within a thousand miles of that gym so I have no idea whether he deserved what he got -- certainly sounds as if he didn't -- but when you live in the spotlight and you represent a university, its students and its fans, low-key would be the way to go, I would think. Son in the game or no, just doesn't seem like a wise course of action.

After all, even if Ford hadn't gotten tossed, some snarky columnist from Deadspin or some other sports web site could have been there and written a mocking piece about how oswho's head coach was seen ragging on the refs at a high school game. I'd say the ref did Ford a favor, making him sort of a victim, when he could have come off much worse.

Can you imagine Coach Kruger riding the officials at his son's high school game back in the day? I can't.

I hope the media beats this official up pretty good. An official should NEVER address a fan unless they are being threatened or that fan is using profanity.

That said, what the heck is Ford doing sitting behind the bench. Dude should be in the rafters and away from the bench.

There have really been some almost ugly incidents with refs at some CHHS bball games this year. My wife's friend is the cheer coach there and at one game a ref told her the girls needed to move away from the endline. Mind you the other school's squad was standing in the same spot just further down the line. The coach pointed this out and the ref responded with "if you don't move them, I physically will." Well, making threats that you are going to physically accost teenagers is probably something grown men shouldn't do. I think the ref was lucky there is always a heavy police presence at OKCPS games.

If Ford really said that then it shows why is in over his head running a legit basketball program.
Can you any other legit d 1 coach being proud of that ??
Guy is a complete joke , and has basically ran a good basketball program straight in the ground .

Osu should have bit the bullet and bought his contract out 5 years ago . Lucky for us they didn't .

Can you see self or Kruger getting thrown out of a high school basketball game ??
