Video: Jim Boeheim tells Andy Katz he's an "idiot"

I really like Katz. And I don't see anything he did here to warrant the verbal attack.

The media people are a bunch of idiots. I see nothing wrong with it. Boeheim didn't go off on him. He simply told him he was an idiot and disloyal person. If you cross someone you should expect consequences. I think Boeheim handle it fine.

Katz's line back was great, "Last time I checked I didn't get paid by Syracuse U."

Katz owes no loyalty to Boeheim.

It's not a journalist's job "not to cross" a coach. What do you think Katz has written or reported that was unfair or inaccurate?

A coach using the word "disloyal" to refer to a journalist doesn't even compute. Katz was right -- he doesn't work for Syracuse or Boeheim.

Jim Boeheim is an ass, sticks his nose up at everyone in the basketball community. He expects his team to get preferential treatment every year.

Holy cow... skyvue and I agree on something.

Katz doesn't owe Boeheim jack squat. Boeheim was just being a crybaby to a media member who reported on something that he didn't want anyone reporting on.

Jim Boeheim should know by now, there is no such thing as "off the record" when talking to a member of the media.

I agree 100% but Boeheim also doesn't owe Katz anything. If you are told something off the record and violate the trust of the person that told you the information, then you should expect consequences. If you constantly write negative things about a program or coach you should expect negative consequences. I wouldn't expect writers to be cheerleaders but I would expect fair and reasonable coverage, not constantly negative coverage.

I have zero problem with what Boeheim did. I actually respect him more for clamly speaking his mind rather than just ignoring Katz. If I had to deal with the media, I would suspect people would get on my bad list and I would not answer their questions. What he did was nothing like Gundy's emotional statements (which I also really didn't have a problem with), Chaney's outburts at Calipari years ago or the behavior of Bob Knight over the years.

Yes, publicly calling a reporter an idiot is incredibly professional.

I don't recall anyone calling Katz' professionalism and objectivity into question.

Max is right; and any coach at a Div. 1 school is well aware there is no such thing as speaking to the media "off the record." On the other side of the coin, Katz probably should have stopped Boeheim (or whomever it was who tried to speak off the record) and told him that if he continued, he was doing so at his own risk.

Boeheim is a major doosh. It's a shame that Carmelo didn't go pro straight out of HS, or else Boeheim would have exactly zero titles. His teams still underperform on an epic scale. He's up there with Rick Barnes in the worst coaches with a good reputation bracket.

Except not even close, because Boeheim is a very, very good coach.

Beoheim is second in wins. He has gone to the post season every year except once when Syracuse was on probation and they had a record that probably would have earned an NCAA bid and certainly an NIT (20-6). In 28 of his 34 seasons he took Syracus to the NCAA. He has been to the final game 3 times and the Sweet 16 18 times. He is 46-27 in the NCAA Tournament. (all of this is per Wikipedia) I really don't see how anyone can say he is not a good coach.
