W & M game

Kur hasn't played poorly, he just doesn't play a lot. Last night against a very legit front-court he had 4 points, 2 rebounds, and a block in 10 minutes.

In the Oregon State game he had 4 points, 1 rebound, 1 block, and 1 steal in 5 minutes.

In the UTSA game he had 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 10 minutes.

He must suck on defensive assignments or something because production isn't really a problem.

The other 2 games I didn't notice much he did wrong. Last night he was atrocious defensively, really got exposed.

Good question. Jalen played well early on, but he hasn’t seen the floor much since his injury. Makes me wonder if he has fully recovered from his concussion?

I don't know. But to me he looks to be a guy who is good guarding on the ball and is long. Nice outside shot, decent hops. In one of the early games he took a guy to the hoop hard with his left and it looked impressive. He scored a couple of baskets inside too. Hope he finds a groove. If Maryland Baltimore County or whatever is as bad as people say then I'd give my man 25+ minutes...

Best thing that came out of this game is we found a seventh player (VI) who can contribute this year. Hoping J Hill will get some time in next few games and we can add him to this list.

Good point. I think VI (Victor) can be a difference maker on the boards and on defense. He plays much bigger than 6’ 7” due to his athleticism, length and impressive hops. He made some great plays down the stretch as part of our comeback win.

I would like to see him get more playing time so he will be ready to contribute when we get into the conference portion of our schedule.

Agree. I think he will play a lot Thursday and will have a chance to earn more minutes going forward. He has been fine so far, last night was just one of those games that was close throughout and I think Lon felt like the three starting guards plus Williams needed to be on the floor. I think Lon looks at Hill as a potential defensive stopper. My local cable provider cut away from the game at 7:30 to show the Minnesota T-Wolves pregame show, so I had to watch the rest of the game on the Fox Sports Go app, which cut out from time to time. Am I right in thinking that there was a late possession where Lon had Hill on the floor for defense coming out of a timeout?

Correct. He came in for a smidge at the end.

Thanks. I love this -- the old offense/defense substitutions. Probably more common in the NBA but I like when college coaches do it. I'd note that in order to use this strategy, it helps if you have timeouts left late in the game!

Well, it does make a difference having to guard a guy like Knight or that 7-footer.

Doo & Iwuakor did a good job, they just made good moves & shots. They got uncontested layups against Kur.

Appears that Manek is the favorite whipping boy by some of our posters. Possible because of high expectations based on the first half of his freshman season.

Several comments about his bad defense. I have felt that he is a pretty good defensive player but a bit undersized in some games.

So I rewatched the William and Mary game concentrating on the Manek defense.

There were 4 W&M baskets that could be blamed on Manek.

1. He fell while guarding Knight and the big guy had an easy one.

2. He guarded Van Vliet most of the night although switching on Knight at times. Early in the game Van Vliet drove to the base line on the left side. Manek stayed with him all the way but Van Vliet scored over him.

3. Van Vleit drove by him to the hoop to score in the second half.

4. I think Knight also scored over him once but not sure. Can't read my own notes.

Otherwise Knight missed most of the shots that he shot against Manek. Manek also did a good job handling the high ball screen, checking drivers and doubling down to help Doolittle against Knight. Doolittle had a real tough night against Knight.

Manek also forced a turnover on the baseline and made a key steal late in the game.

Van Vliet also hit two long treys but Manek was not guarding him at the time. At least one was with Brady on the bench.

Jalen came in twice. Once very early in the game and then to sub for Smidge Reaves. :) , when he tweaked his ankle.

I thought so also.

McKee indicated it was his first action late, wouldn’t be McKee’s first mistake.

Lol ain't that the truth. Broadcast as a whole wasn't great last night -- score graphic didn't work for much of the first half. They also were showing a replay when Reaves shot an important free throw in the last 20 seconds or so, which was especially annoying since they had a couple minutes to show the replay multiple times during the official review of the out of bounds call.

I think Chad and Manzer are great. I like Chad's slight goofiness yet he does his job professionally. If you really listen, Manzer gives top notch insight, way better than anyone at ESPN.

Now the misspelled graphics is embarrassing. Who is working back there? I mean one will slip by every once in awhile.. But these telecasts seem to have a bunch. And, yes, keep the camera on the action.

I agree about McGee and Manzer. I think Manzer does a very good job. He knows more about the history of OU basketball than most of the national color commentators.

Yes, I think Manzer is very good. McKee is a spare. And less camera on Jessica Coody.

They seem to have constant issues with the score. Sometimes they add only 1 point for a field goal or give the points to the wrong team.

I also agree that McKee and Manzer do a good job. No one is perfect, and you can't blame the play-by-play guy and analyst for the graphics errors.

Did they have one of those Jessica Coody features (about a player's parents or something equally compelling) that they inexplicably ran during live game action?

This made me laugh out loud because every time they throw it to her, I silently pray that they keep the camera on the game. It's like they don't think people can listen to her speak while watching game action. Luckily, they went to her very early in the game while there was a stoppage to fix the shot clock. Which reminds me -- why can't college basketball figure out how to solve clock issues? You rarely see those in the NBA, but it seems to happen almost every game in college, whether because of operator error or technological glitches.

I think Jessica does a good job on her sideline comments and interviews but they shouldn't show her on camera while the came is going on.
