Washington

I dont wonder that Maddie is hesitant. Athletes usually are after an acl injury. It may take a couple of months for her to get her confidence in her knee back. But to have the other knee go out the following year! I just hope she is playing loose by January but I wont be surprised if it takes her most of this season.

Nice win for our Sooners.

I'll start with the negatives first. After playing a solid 37 minutes, I saw one of the worst coaching jobs by Sherri and staff. Kaylon and Sharane were absolutely dominating the inside. Now we bring them both to the free throw line extended and Washington's guards give us fits. I did not understand freezing the ball out side. Typical of a Coale coached team and did not sit well with me. We still have problems on off side defensive help, but I can see that it can be corrected. Our free throw shooting was abysmal. Good thing we got 37 shots, because we needed them since we hit 50 percent.

Positive. Gabi is going to be a terrific point guard. She pushes the ball up court and quickly gets us into the offense. She will have growing pains, but I like what I see. We finally got to see the Kaylon we wanted to see. Sharane was out standing. Peyton will be fine, she hit some big time shots. Nicole played her usual solid game. LaNesia played well for a freshman's first outing. I could go on. I thought every single girl that played tonight contributed in some way and was refreshing that Sherri could go to her bench and not have a drop off in talent on the floor. The skip passes were good when the Sooners made the defense move, not so good when we didn't. That will come with experience. Rebounding was very solid, and the grit this team showed was wonderful. This team is learning how to win and will surprise a lot of people in close games. We will steal two or three wins this season because of our aggressive style of play.

Yeah I know it is just the first game of the season, but I sure liked what I saw and can see what the future can hold for these kids. Maddie still has some rust, but she will shake it off. I look for her to be a major contributor as she gets more comfortable. Really proud of how the kids hung in and earned this victory.

Great first game against a solid opponent. This wasn't East Popcorn State. Good to see Sherri use the bench and let guys see some action. KK played her best yet. Sharane was Sharane and really our best player. Maddie was tentative and that will improve. Recovery from an ACL has 2 dimensions - one is physical, she has done the physical - the other is mental and she is working on that.

Really good post, Roc, as usual!

I was pleasantly surprised with our rebounding. Kaylon, Sharane, and Peyton really did a good job on the boards. We won the rebounding battle 43-30. Imagine what the score would have been if rebounding would have been even. I still don't think our rebounding problems are behind us but last night was very positive.

I agree with others who have said Ortiz seems to be bothered by nerves when it comes to shooting. Her free throws even look bad at this point but I have no doubt she will overcome her shooting woes shortly. Her passing and quickly advancing the ball downcourt is really good. I can certainly live with only 3 turnovers by the PG. Her future looks fantastic.

I like Little a lot. She looks like a basketball player. She and Ortiz seem to have the highest basketball IQs on the team. I would add Sharane but, I think she primarily excels on determination as much as anything. She is just relentless when she sees an opening in the defense and on putbacks. I love the way she plays and I believe she is on the road to an excellent senior season.

While I don't think Kaylon has suddenly made a turnaround, I loved what I saw from her last night. Defense wasn't always stellar but her offense and rebounding was superb.

A key last night was Kornet. Really good job! I won't be surprised if she starts next game.

Not sure what Derica didn't play. I know she had family coming to the game from Tennessee so curious why she didn't get a few minutes.

I thought it was a mistake for Sherri not to put Sharane on Plum much earlier than she did. Sharane is our best defender and I don't believe Plum would have scored in the 40s if Sharane was in her grill.

Now that I have had a chance to digest a little more on last nights game a couple of more observations. I thought our shot selection was excellent. What I noticed is that these kids looked for the high percentage shots as opposed to just jacking up three's when we felt like it. Peyton, Nicole, Maddie, Sharane, and Derica can certainly fill it up from BTA, but they were focused for most of the game and played a very smart basketball game for such a young team.

I thought in spite of some defensive mistakes the girls played aggressively on the defensive end and created some nice opportunities.

Last but not least, it is nice to see kids FOLLOWING THEIR SHOTS and have several team mates surrounding the ball on rebounds and fighting for the ball. For a first game, I hope the kids are developing good habits of fundamentals that will carry them to a very successful season.

A side note on Derica. I do know that she has been wearing a protective boot when not practicing. She has a soft tissue bruise or contusion on her heel or instep. She can play without pain, but I think Sherri may be taking a precautionary approach and letting her heal up before they start their away from home grind in a couple of weeks.

Speaking of wearing a boot, during a timeout, I noticed that one of the players in street clothes was wearing a boot. Which one was that?

It was Shaya, She has a fracture that required surgery, I believe she is scheduled to be back practicing around the first week of December.

Kellog. During the exhibition game they said she had a screw put in. They expected her to be ready by the tourney at Thanksgiving.

I had an injury to my instep/arch and had to wear a boot. My tendon was pulling off the bone. Very painful. I can't imagine playing basketball with something like that.

I was really impressed with how the sooners played. I thought we missed a lot of shots that could have gone in. Hopefully that changes this season. I could see this team Do some special things.

Also Kelsey Plumb is an amazing player. Best of luck to her and Washington

If you look at what Washington did last year, they were 9-4 in their last 13 conference games including an 87-82 win over Stanford. They came on strong because they were a very young team last year. With 90% of their scoring and rebounding back, I really expected Washington to win over an OU team that had not had a chance to work together in a game.

Although everyone contributed, what really came to the front was that the players who had been here last year took the lead. Kaylon, Sharane, and Nicole were our best players last night. Little and Ortiz showed a lot of potential, but experience won the game. They simply had no answer for Kaylon, any more than we had for Plum. But, we had more helping pieces than Plum had.

The Huskies last year only averaged scoring about a half point more than their opponents. They were outrebounded by four per game. They shot about three percent better last night than they did last year. They all performed about like they did last year, except that Plum had a breakout night.

I was surprised that we were so effective together in our first game.

Me too! I think what set this young team apart, was the "whole" and not individuals. Kids were looking for team mates to score in the best possible settings. Once they saw Kaylon just dominating the inside, they made efforts to get her the ball. They let Sharane do what she does best. A truly "team" win.

Big win for such a youthful team! Hopefully, that experience is teaching the youth how to play games and I think they are. Sharane is such an outstanding teacher of playing hard all the time. This team was also communicating on the floor like I've not heard before. There will be bumps in the road with this team but I think they can be a strong team by conference/tourney time.

True on the shots but, i know it's one game, I didn't see us missing all the close in shots that it seems we have missed in the past.

i'm just a step behind you!

It's because of that injury;isn't it? :)

I look forward to getting up at 2am to watch/listen to this team play. Glad to see that close to half the games will be played during "normal" hours for me. I hope they continue to play with a passion even after they stumble a couple of times.

I believe this team will have a hard time beating really good teams unless Maddie starts playing at a higher level consistently. She needs to be able to defend, knock down some outside shots, and the mid-range jumpers. She at least needs to be a 10+ PPG and a 5+ RPG player. Without her, I think beating teams like Texas, Baylor, and WVU in Norman will be tough.

We also have to have Kaylon playing close to what we saw from her last night. Consistency will be the key to watch with her over the next 4-5 games.

SoonerNorm, I hope you are only partially correct. We need Maddie, but this TEAM played hard the whole game, and played as a team. We have several players who are "basketball smart", and that will overcome talent a lot of time. We may lose to some "better" teams, but I think we can also beat teams with better talent with teamwork, heart, and hustle. I hope!
